1. Re: Trying to animate a clip's motion in Premiere 6
Bill Hunt Apr 23, 2011 4:32 PM (in response to numetro)Instead of a GIF, I would look into doing a PSD, or PNG with the background Transparent.
As I picked up Pr with v 6.5, I am not sure if there are limitations on Transparency with 6.0.
Others can point out any issues along those lines.
Good luck,

numetro Apr 23, 2011 4:45 PM (in response to Bill Hunt)Hi Bill,
This is the same guy who you offered to convert the problem Photoshop PSDs for yesterday after I sent them to Noel.
I'll give that a try with the PSD or the PNG files as an alternative.
But now I am getting an error message when I try to preview my motion graphic... when I select "Timeline>Preview>Enter" (or just hit enter), I get the "Building Preview" panel that say's, "Building 1 of 1", but then on top of that I get an panel that says, "An error occured while making the movie. Error writing file (disk full?)." ... but my disk/hard drive is nowhere near full... it has 40 gigs open on it.
- Thanks for your help,

3. Re: Trying to animate a clip's motion in Premiere 6
numetro Apr 23, 2011 5:29 PM (in response to numetro)Hi Bill,
Well, my first test movie of my first test animation in Premiere 6 did work... I exported the timeline and I get a nice little AVI file of my graphic in a black box moving on the fill color background.
I'm not sure why the preview window won't work though.
I tried the PSD file and the PNG... the PSD does not appear with a transparent background... that is giving me the black box background in the Motions Settings dialog box and the final exported AVI... and the import clip dialog doesn't see the PNG file at all.
Does your version of Premiere 6.5 support transparent backgrounds for imported graphic clips... and further still, does the main preview work?
Thanks,
numetro

4. Re: Trying to animate a clip's motion in Premiere 6
numetro Apr 23, 2011 9:04 PM (in response to numetro)Hi Bill and other experts,
Below are the paragraphs in the Premiere 6 instructions that apply to my questions... I found this information about rendering the background of an image clip graphic as transparent so it will take on the color or image that is behind it, but then the information in these paragraphs does not tell me these things:
1- Where is the Alpha Channel key? - Can't find this in the instructions.
2- Where is the Transparency Settings dialog box? - Can't find this in the instructions.
3- Where is the Export Settings dialog box? - Can't find this in the instructions.
I've saved my PSD graphic file with a "straight" alpha channel that defines the area of the image that should be treated as transparency, but the questions above are the stopping points to getting these methods (described below in paragraphs copied from the instructions) to work.
Also at the bottom here there is a paragraph about previewing in the monitor window... one method works but the main method of just hitting enter is still giving me an error message.

Using the Alpha Channel Key
Images represented on video are composed of three grayscale images called channels--one red, one green, and one blue. Such images are called RGB images. An alpha channel is a fourth channel in an RGB image that defines what parts of the image are transparent or semitransparent. Many programs, such as Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, use alpha channels so that you can specify transparent regions in an image. An alpha channel is either straightpremultiplied, depending on the program that created the image. When an image contains a straight alpha channel, the transparency information is stored only in the alpha channel. When an image contains a premultiplied alpha channel, the background color that is intended to be transparent is also blended into the edges of an image. Use the Alpha Channel key on clips that contain a straight alpha channel, such as images created in Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe After Effects.
When you use the Alpha Channel key with a clip to which you have applied or plan to apply motion, select the Use Clip's Alpha option in the Motion Settings dialog box. If this setting is not selected, the clip's bounding box will appear when the clip moves. See Specifying alpha channel and color options.
(Where is the Alpha Channel key? - Can't find this in the instructions)
____________________________________________________________
Specifying alpha channel and color option
You can include a fill color and specify how Premiere treats the alpha channel of the clip.
In the Motion Settings dialog box, choose any of the following options:
Reset - Removes the distortion, delay, rotation, and zoom settings for a selected keyframe.
Fill Color - Specifies a background color that fills the frame behind the moving clip. To select a background color, click the desired color on the thumbnail in the Fill Color box (the pointer turns into the eyedropper tool when it is on the thumbnail), or click the color swatch above the thumbnail to access the color picker and choose a color. This color appears in previews and the rendered video program only if the clip is placed in the Video 1 track.
Alpha: Use Clip's - Superimposes a clip using its existing alpha channel. This is the normal setting for titles or graphics created in another application that supports alpha channels, such as Adobe Photoshop. This option affects only those clips that have been assigned an alpha channel key type in the Transparency Settings dialog box. For information on alpha channels, see Using the Alpha Channel key.
(Where is the Transparency Settings dialog box? - Can't find this in the instructions)Alpha: Create New - Creates a transparent fill for clips that do not have an existing alpha channel. With this option selected, an alpha channel is created for the areas in the clip that have been assigned a key type in the Transparency Settings dialog box. See Using the Alpha Channel key.
Note: - Choosing the Create New option for an image containing an alpha channel overwrites the original alpha channel when the image is superimposed.

Choosing Export Settings
As part of the process of exporting, check the options in the Export Settings dialog box. The initial export settings are the same as the settings you specified in the Project Settings dialog box when you first started the project. Export settings don't update as you work on your project, however, so it's a good idea to make sure that all export settings are still the ones you want. Although the Export Settings dialog box is similar to the Project Settings dialog box, important differences exist. For example, the Special Processing panel is included so that you can apply certain changes to all clips in the Timeline at export time, such as resizing, cropping, and noise reduction.
(Where is the Export Settings dialog box? - Can't find this in the instructions)Note: Some capture-card software and plug-in software provide their own dialog boxes with specific options. If the options you see are different that those described in Premiere's online Help refer to the documentation for your capture card or plug-in.

To preview motion in the Monitor window:
1 - Click OK to save and close the motion settings.
2 - Do one of the following:
- Build a preview file: move the yellow work area bar so it covers the clip with the motion settings and press Enter (Windows) or Return (Mac OS).
THIS DOES NOT WORK - I GET AN ERROR MESSAGE THAT SAYS: "An error occured while making the movie. Error writing file (disk full?)." ... BUT MY DISK/HARD DRIVE IS NOT FULL - IT STILL HAS 40 GIGS OPEN ON IT.- Render-scrub the area you want to preview: hold down Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac OS); when the cursor becomes a downward pointing arrow, scrub in the Timeline window's time ruler.
THIS WORKS WHEN SCRUBBING THE AREA TO PREVIEW IN THE TIMELINE.Thanks for any help with these questions, numetro -
5. Re: Trying to animate a clip's motion in Premiere 6
numetro Apr 23, 2011 10:05 PM (in response to numetro)Also I just found that, when the clip is placed in the "Video 2" or higher area of the Timeline, then the "Transparency Setup" button in the "Effect Controls" palette appears and it takes me to a selection of "Key Types" for making parts of the clip image transparent based on color or alpha channel... using the "Difference Matte" selection along with the "Reverse Key" check box in the "Transparency Settings" dialog box makes it display the correct background as transparent in the "Transparency Settings" dialog box preview image, but it still will not preview with a transparent background in the main "monitor" window once the "Transparency Settings" dialog box is closed... and the exported timeline movie does not show a transparent clip image background... it still shows the image's background as black on top of the background fill color.
Help!

alsclips Apr 23, 2011 11:51 PM (in response to numetro)Did you render the clip after you applied the effect? The clip has to be rendered in order for it to preview or export properly.

numetro Apr 24, 2011 12:18 AM (in response to alsclips)Hi Allan,
No, I haven't seen anything about first "redering the clip" in 10 or so pages that I've read so far on the different topics.
I did finally find the Transparency Settings dialog box and the Export Settings dialog box, but one question that seems to still be pertinant is...
Where is the Alpha Channel key?
How do I "render the clip"?
Thanks,
numetro

alsclips Apr 24, 2011 12:53 AM (in response to numetro)Alpha Channel Key.......Select a clip in a superimpose track (video track 2 or higher). Then go to your menu bar and choose CLIP...VIDEO OPTIONS....TRANSPARENCY. From the KEY TYPE pull down menu of Transparency Settings dialog box choose ALPHA CHANNEL.
Render a clip......Set your WORK AREA BAR over the clip(s) you wish to render. Then go to your menu bar and chose TIMELINE....RENDER WORK AREA.

9. Re: Trying to animate a clip's motion in Premiere 6
numetro Apr 24, 2011 12:54 AM (in response to numetro)Hi again Allan,
Well, I'm not sure what "rendering the clip" is, but I finally got it to work correctly without that step.
After getting the Transparency Settings dialog box to show the correct preview with "Key Type: Alpha Channel" with a transparent background (whereas for some reason it wasn't previewing in the Transparency Settings box before with Key Type: Alpha Channel selected before)... now it does and I placed a background image in the Video 1 slot in the timeline, and my graphic with the Alpha Channel in the Video 2 slot, then it previewed correctly with my graphic on top of my background image... and exporting to AVI made a clip that looks correct... finally on the 7th try.
So I'm not sure what rendering the clip is, but it appears un-neccesary in this case.
Still, when I preview, I have to preview while holding down the ALT key and scrubbing over the timeline... for some reason when I hit enter, it starts to build the preview and then gives the error message suggesting that there isn't enough disk space, but there are 40 gigs open.
Anyway, thanks for your input.

11. Re: Trying to animate a clip's motion in Premiere 6
numetro Apr 24, 2011 9:16 AM (in response to Ann Bens)Hi Ann, Bill and Allan...
Allan, I guess, like with Photoshop, there are a number of ways to do any one thing in Premiere... I see your last post was made at about the same instant when I posted that I had success finally with making my graphic with a transparent background alpha channel work correctly on the 7th try... lucky 7... I clicked the "helpful answer" thingy on your response today... it was similar to the solution that I had just discovered about a half hour before our lasts responses to each other.
The actual correct answer for me came with my own technique (of trial and error) described above, and I can't give myself a "correct answer" thingy click, and I can't give Allan a "helpful answer" click AND a "correct answer" click because of the limitations of this forum software.
Bill, using a PSD did make the difference along the way of my attempts yesterday... I clicked the "helpful answer" thingy on your response too.
Hi Ann... thanks for your response... were you referring to the problem that I'm having with making the preview work normally in the monitor window when you referred to the C drive and temp files?... if so, I'm not sure what you mean... maybe you could clarify.
To reitterate my previewing problem from my prior post...
THIS WORKS WHEN SCRUBBING THE AREA TO PREVIEW IN THE TIMELINE... Render-scrub the area you want to preview: hold down Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac OS); when the cursor becomes a downward pointing arrow, scrub in the Timeline window's time ruler.
THIS DOES NOT WORK - I GET AN ERROR MESSAGE THAT SAYS: "An error occured while making the movie. Error writing file (disk full?)." ... BUT MY DISK/HARD DRIVE IS NOT FULL - IT STILL HAS 40 GIGS OPEN ON IT.
Build a preview file: move the yellow work area bar so it covers the clip with the motion settings and press Enter (Windows) or Return (Mac OS).
Maybe I'm not getting that technique correct... this refers to the "yellow work area bar" and moving it so it covers the clip with motion settings... does this mean the pale yellow bar with nothing on it at the top of the timeline?... when I try to move that so it is on top of the clip with motion settings nothing happens... before I thought I just needed to hit enter/return once I closed the motion settings or the transparency settings dialog box... moving the yellow bar at the top of the timeline doesn't do anything.
At least I can scrub the timeline while holding down the ALT key, but I'd like to be able to use the normal "hit enter" way of previewing.
Thanks again,
PS: I'm not recieving email alerts from this forum anymore... I did on Bill's first response yesterday, but never received another email notice after that... and the color formatting with this forum software isn't working.
