    Is there an 856 x 480 wide format profile/preset available for Premiere 6 ?

    numetro Community Member

      Hi Premiere experts,

Is there an 856 x 480 (or 854 x 480) wide format preset/profile available for Premiere 6 ?... I can see that there is a 720 x 480 preset/profile when first opening Premiere, but since the wider 856 x 480 format is somewhat popular now and third party profiles with that aspect ratio are available for some of the simpler Microsoft movie making apps, and it is built-in to others, I thought there may be the wider one available for Premeire 6 on a Windows machine.

I couldn't find any information about this wide format preset/profile size when I did a forum search.

In addition to wide profiles, I'm wondering about the best compressor codecs for quality versus file size for Premiere 6... I know I'm using an old version of Premiere, but I thought it may have the same needs as the newer versions of Premiere... not sure about that.

Currently, I have these codecs available to me on this machine that show up in Premiere 6...

the CamStudio Lossless v1.4 codec -- the Cinepak Codec by Radius codec -- the Huffyuv v2.1.1 codec CCESP Patch v0.2.5 codec-- the Intel IYUV codec -- the Lagarith lossless codec -- the Microsoft RLE codec -- the Microsoft Video 1 codec -- the MSU Screen Capture Lossless v1.2 codec  -- the x264vfw H.26/MPEG-4 AVC codec -- and the Xvid MPEG-4 codec.

Thanks for any help and input on these two questions,

I have never heard of that size... as far as I know, widescreen still uses 720x480... but with a PAR (Pixel Aspect Ratio) of 1.2 instead of 1.0, so the onscreen result is wider

I do not recall if Pr 6.0 had the Desktop Preset, or not. In PrPro, the Desktop Preset allows one to customize most of the attributes in a Project. I would poke around, looking for either "Desktop," or perhaps "Custom."

            Good luck,

              Hi John and Bill,

              Thanks for your replies.

856x480 (or 854x480) is a format supported by built-in and third party profiles for Windows Live Movie Maker 2011, Movie Maker 2.6, PhotoStory 3, and it is supported by YouTube and probably other online video players... this is the format that I've been using as much as possible when saving movies from WLMM 2011 and PhotoStory 3 for the nice wide cinematic screen size... and it looks pretty nice on YouTube, though they recently removed the "Pop out" screen feature, 856x480 is still supported in their normal and "Expanded" screen size.

For example, below are two links to recent videos that I made and posted on YouTube that were made from some of my own still images and stock video, one with pans and zooms, both produced in the 856x480 format... both of these are best viewed at the "Expanded" screen size in 720p HD settings...

"A FLIGHT THROUGH TIME IN SAN FRANCISCO"

              http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YaPlVOpfVk4

              "NEWS OF THE ATOMIC AGE"

              http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vqqLuJ5UT0&feature=youtube_gdata

and here is a link to the same second one, "NEWS OF THE ATOMIC AGE", that automatically goes to a full page, 720p HD video player size on YouTube, also supported for 856x480 size...

              http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v=7vqqLuJ5UT0&vq=hd720

And aspect ratios versus pixel dimensions are something that in some     cases are not making sense to me.  Why sometimes is 720x480 referred to as a 4:3 aspect ratio, and other times 720x480 is referred to as a 16:9 aspect ratio... but otherwise 854x480 (or 856x480) is referred to as a 16:9 aspect ratio.  And other times, 640x480 is referred to as a 4:3 aspect ratio, but other times, as I said, it is 720x480 that is referred to as a 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio... then     there is 864x480 referred to as a 9:5 aspect ratio... and these are just the sizes with 480 for the vertical size... I'm so confused.

              Thanks for any help,

                Hi Bill,

I'm not sure what you mean by "poke around" looking for "Desktop" or "Custom"... poke around where?... those are pretty broad terms to do Google searches with.  When I am asking for help, I'm always referring to Premiere 6... unfortunately, I don't have access to PrPro and its more current abilities, so references to what it has doesn't apply to my current situation.

                Thanks,

I would start with the Help Files, and look for terms, such as "Desktop," "Custom Preset," etc., to see if mention is made of those.

If you cannot find it, with a couple of variations on search, do not give up just yet.

Go to New Project, and in the various, available Presets (you may have to twirl open all of them), look for Desktop, Custom, etc. If you cannot find either, then that will probably indicate that Pr 6.0 had not added that capability to fully "customize" a Project. It seems that it appeared with Pr 7.0/PrPro 1.0, but I could well be wrong.

If that is the case, then you will be relegated to only one of the provided Presets, and there will be no way to adjust the Frame Size Attributes.

Good luck, and please report what you find.

When you first open Premiere the "Load Project Settings" dialog box opens.  The "Load Projects Settings" dialog box will also open when you start a new project.  After the dialog box opens you can make choices as to the video and audio for your project.

                    Regards, Allan

                      Hi Bill,

Going to "File>New Project" or to  "Project>Project Settings>General" or to "Project>Project  Settings>Video" brings up the same options as when I just open  Premiere 6 raw without an file information... 720x480 defined as  wide-screen 16:9 and even 720x576 also defined as widescreen 16:9... I  can see that there are allot of overlapping, imprecise terms in the  video editing and formatting arenas.

Doing a search for "desktop"  in the help files brings up Exporting to videotape, Previewing on another monitor,  Changing the pallette display, and General Settings... none of which  have any info about my question.

Doing a search for "custom preset" in the help files brings up Saving and loading project settings, Starting a project, Using the Commands palette, and Video settings... none of which  have any info about my question.

And doing a prior search for 856x480, 854x480, 856 x 480, 854 x 480, and every combination thereof didn't bring up anything in the help files.

What I was actually wondering is if there are any optional presets/profiles for 856x480 (or 854x480) available as Adobe add-ons or plug-ins or as third party presets that some independant company or individual may have written, as there have been for some of the Microsoft movie making apps (and others I'm sure).

Does Adobe or anyone have a webpage where things like this might be found for Premiere?

If this can be done with custom preset settings in "Premiere 6", can anyone out there tell me how?

                      Thanks,

Does Pr 6.0 offer anything, like the Desktop Preset?

                        Thanks,

I figured it out on my own.

Sorry Allan, since I'm not receiving email notices about new posts  from this forum (in spite of the way I have the prefs set) I missed your  post behind Bill's last post and I went to figure it out for myself...  another problem with this forum software that I've encountered twice is  that it'll say that one remaines logged in, but when one goes to post  something it blanks out what one wrote and says, "Unauthorized, check to see if you need to login" or something like that... then it says one is still logged in, but one is not still logged in and has to log in again to re-write what one wrote before.

So, before opening or  creating a project, go to "Projects>Project Settings>General" and  in the "Editing Mode" field, "Video for Windows" must be selected...  otherwise it does not give you the option to change the frame size in  the "Next" panel for "Video" where one then can select a compressor  codec and change the frame size to, in my case, 856x480... other  settings in the following "Next" panels, "Audio", "Keyframe and  Rendering" and "Capture" can be left unchanged.

Then  after saving that preset it can be selected in an an existing or a new  job... then when rendering the movie, "Export Timeline>Movie", in the  "Export movie" dialog box, click "settings" and select the new (856x480  in my case) preset that was made for the new movie... note that it then  shows the new preset information at the bottom of the "Export movie"  dialog box, and click, "Save".

I tested it and I get my  new wider format movie with my test clip with graphic  made in proportion to 856x480 in Photoshop with an alpha channel for background transparency.

Now, all of  a sudden, my monitor window works for previewing the way that it  should, just by hitting enter after saving the project... it builds the  preview correctly and previews correctly and no longer gives the error  message... who knows why.

PS: Make sure one's anti-virus isn't running a scan while trying to render a project.

                            I'm so confused.

Here's the deal. Edit in a Widescreen NTSC preset.  The frame size will be 720 x 480, with wider than normal pixels.  Those wider pixels are what make it stretch out to fill a 16 x 9 frame.  When you go to export, then you can make the square pixel equivalent (856 x 480).

I'm suggesting you not use Desktop mode, and stick to the presets.  Use a timeline that matches your footage.  You can change the resolution on export, not before editing.

Predicated on Jim Simon's comments, is your Source Footage 856 x 480 with square, or non-square pixels?

Maybe I have just been confused all along, and did not ask some very specific questions about your Source Footage.

                                      Hi Jim,

I think you are a little over my head now... why wouldn't I want to do it the way that I described and finally had success with?... I created a preset... not sure what you mean by "timeline that matches the footage"... I just have my one clip in the timeline with the static background image underneath it... this has only been a test.

Sorry, I didn't take a class in Premiere... I just installed an old copy yesterday that I had and started in with this motion graphic thing... figured that out with the transparency issue and the motion issue yesterday and last night, now I figured out the wide-screen issue that got me in to the format that I needed after a few hours after jumping in to that today.

Thanks for the tip about the forum problems Bill... a bit frustrating on top of everything else.

My source footage isn't footage... it is a created static graphic that I've animated in Premiere and a static background image underneath it.

In basic terms, one wants to create a Project (or Sequence in later versions), that matches their Source Files 100%. The details of the Source Files can be found with either G-Spot, or MediaInfo, if the editor does not know it, to begin with.

This will solve many possible issues later on. My problem is that I do not know what was available with Pr 6.0, and I have not seen a definitive answer yet.

When you run your Source Files through G-Spot, or MediaInfo, what are all of the parameters? Those would direct you, on your choice of Presets (Project before PrPro CS3).

What, then, do you wish to use as your delivery format/CODEC, when you Export?

                                            Hi Bill,

You can read my solution post eight boxes up... that is the definative answer... there are no issues since I figured it out.

I know what all the source files figures are since, as I said before, I created them... the source files are made in proportion to 856x480 and that was my intension... this thread was about how to find or create the 856x480 preset frame size for Premiere 6... I did that.

Here are the results to see for yourself...

Here are two links to test uploads of my first motion graphic test that I was doing in Premiere 6 over the last two days...

These test uploads are for sharpness comparison between the compressed WMV file upload and the raw AVI file upload, and also to see how this kind of motion graphic appears on YouTube.

The first test is with the AVI file motion graphic test placed in Windows Live Movie Maker, compressed to a 1280x720 pixel WMV file format, with an intro and music, played three times... it is 59 seconds long...

check the sharpness at the motion stop point at 00:14 by stopping the video player at that moment...

And here is the link to the test upload of the raw AVI file... check the sharpness at the motion stop point at 00:06 by stopping the video player at that moment...

Stop the videos at the time points noted above and have them side by side in tabs in your web browser... then click back and forth to see the sharpness difference.

Thanks for everyone's input... sometimes I do okay figuring things out on my own... it's the process, ya know?

PS: I've had to come back and edit the messed up formatting on this post three times... this forum software is really going through some problems.

                                              Bill,

I read your article on the email alert settings, but when I go to those pages, they contradict each other...

On the "Your Preferences" page, under "Email Notifications Preferences" (Image 2 in your article) I have selected "Yes" to both options that say, "Always subscribe via email to threads I create" and "Always subscribe to email thread I reply to"...

But on the "Mailing Lists" page, it says, "You are not subscribed to receive email notifications on any forums. To  sign up to receive notifications of activity in a forum, visit the forum  page and click the 'Receive Email Notifications' link."... but your article does not include the "Mailing Lists" page with this statement.

But on the forum page for my thread, under "Actions", (Image 1 in your article) I have already selected "Receive Email Notifications" and that link says, "Stop email notifications"... so there is nothing more I can do to recieve email notifications, yet I am not getting them as of right after your original reply at the beginning of my thread today.

And on my profile page, on the email notifications tab, all three of my topics show up, (Image 3 in your article).

So there are three different pages that email notification prefs can be set and all of them for me are set to receive email notifications, but that fourth page says that I am not subscribed to receive them and refers me to a page that says I am... and I'm not getting them.

Who designed this forum software... I hope it wasn't you!... sorry.

It isn't a contridiction really. There are two places and types of e-mail notification available.

One is for ALL replies in a particular forum, while the other limits the notification to just the posts that one creates. In the old forum, everything was in one place. Now, you have to navigate around a bit, and determine which, if any, types of notification you require. I have both turned OFF.

                                                Good luck,

If you are unable to turn OFF e-mail notification, post to the Forum Comments Forum, and Adobe-Admin will reset your Adobe account. For almost everyone, who has posted there, the steps outlined in that linked article have worked 100% - must have helped nearly 1000 Adobe forum users to date.

                                                    Bill,

(??) I'm trying to turn it ON... I have all THREE pages saying that it is turned ON, and, as I was explaining, a fourth page saying it is turned OFF and that page refers me to a page that says it is turned ON... I'm not sure if what I am typing is coming across in the same words on your end.

And just now, when trying to reply, I had to log in and log out four times because this forum page and the other thread page about the text crawl would say I'm logged in, but not give me the options to reply... finally on the fourth time I logged back in it works.

                                                    Thanks,

The forum has been wonky for the last two days, with posts and replies disappearing, then re-appearing again, at seemingly random order. Some display for a bit, and then disappear for good. Also, the phantom log-out seems to be lurking too. Not sure if any of this is affecting e-mail notification, but that is possible.

Good luck, and sorry for my confusion on what you wished to do. It was not your words, but my reading of them...

And boy does this look sharp and clean when viewed in HD, having used a custom HD profile in Movie Maker 2.6... I used the earlier MS Movie Maker app as a base to create this film for the nice, easy scrolling-crawling text feature.  And Adobe Premiere was used to create the animated motion graphics in this film.  See the credits at the end for notes about where all the elements came from.

                                                              Jeff,

The thread you are responding to me on is the thread that I started... Bill was advising me about the log in problems and email alert problems here previously.

I contacted Adobe today on the online chat and got nothing but run around.

My line of thinking is that if enough people report the problem to Adobe, maybe someone will do something... merely posting my problem on the forum for other forum members to reply to is, in effect, what I did by posting on the threads that I replied to after getting erroneous email alerts about them.

I seems that it is either get no email alerts at all, or get alerts about threads that I didn't subscribe to.

Has this forum been running this way for long?... I have only been a member for a week and it seems completely whacked out.

Can you advise anyone that troubleshoots the "Jive" software that runs this forum?

                                                              Thanks for your response,

Sorry, I'll stick to standard practices here.

After posting my pleas for help on those threads that I was erroneously getting alerts from, or course, they were then listed on my discussions page, but I don't know if they were there before, erroneously, or if they weren't there until after I posted that I was receiving mis-directed alerts from them... so I deleted them from my discussions page.

Now I'm not getting those alerts, but I'm not sure if it is because there just hasn't been any activity on those threads, or that deleting them made it so they don't send me alerts, since I was getting alerts from them before I ever posted those notices... or if I'm just not getting any alerts at all, since I wasn't getting alerts even for my own threads before... but I am getting alerts about your posts now, so I'm guessing that problem is somehow solved.  And if those aren't enough confusing possibilities, then one more may be that one of the chat people that I was online with about these problems did something to reset my account, though one of them gave me no options and the other just wanted to reset my password.
