I have completed the installation of Digital Editions, but it did not leave any icon on my desktop, nor any entry on my Program menu, nor any footprint in my Program Files.
How do I start the application without navigating to the Digital Editions page on the Adobe web site, and clicking the Launch button again?

I presume that you are on a Windows computer.
If so, you can click on the START tab at the lower left of the main screen,
and get a popup. Put your cursor on "ALL PROGRAMS", and then slide it over
to "Adobe Digital Editions". Click on that tab, and ADE will start.
If you want to leave an icon on your desktop, follow the above procedure,
but drag and drop "Adobe Digital Editions" onto your desktop. After that,
you can use the icon to launch ADE.
Hope this helps!

Turns out my problem is caused by some interference between FireFox and ZoneAlarm.
I turned off the Browser.download.manager.scanWhenDone setting in Firefox, and disabled the Browser Security feature in ZoneAlarm (and turned them on again afterwards).
Don't know which made the difference, but the Digital Editions download worked normally, and installed normally, and I could find all of the icons and exe's.
