Preferred Write Speed for building your DVD?

    mdubuque Community Member

      Hello,

My DVD is taking forever to burn.  I'm burning it with a write speed of 4x.  My rationale for such a slow speed was that there might be fewer errors if I chose the slower write speed.

      Was I mistaken?

      Thanks!

Make an iso (image) and burn that with e.g. Nero and see it that its any faster.

Could be you have a lot o content on the dvd.

Or is it the rendering (building the dvd)  to slow.

Thank you.  OK, I'll do so.

It was the transcoding that was too slow.

              Matt,

Within limits, a slower burn speed is better, as the pits are sharper, and better formed, resulting in a higher likelyhood of full playability. Choosing a higher speed is often penny-wise, though pound foolish, in that the time saved, might well translate into having to do it all over again, should playability not be up to snuff. Remember, NO DVD player is certified to play ANY burned DVD, but only replicated DVD's.The more that one can do to insure greater playability, the better.

Ann's ISO method is a good one, as would be Burn to Folder. I like the latter, as I do not need to use any mounting software to work with the folder, like one has to with an ISO. ImgBurn is a free utility for burning, but I think that it's PC-only. There should be similar for the Mac, but I do not have any names. Still, with either an ISO, or a Folder (will be a VIDEO_TS w/ the necessary files inside), you can use other software to do the physical burn, at your convenience.

              Good luck,

Transcoding is predicated mostly on the CPU, and then on the HDD I/O, but to a lesser degree. About the only way to improve Transcode times is to get a monster CPU, though upgrading the I/O will help - just not at the level of a screaming CPU will.

                Good luck,

Huh?  I've never had to 'mount' an ISO for anything.  Both Encore and ImgBurn work with them directly.  VLC can also play them directly.

The advantage of an ISO is that it's all in one file.  Very easy.

                    Jim,

VLC can also play them directly.

                    Thanks for that info.

As for burning, yes, Encore and ImgBurn can work directly from the ISO, for a burn. That was not the issue that I was pointing to, BUT you educated me with the VLC comment. Learn something new every day. Though I use it a lot, had never tried playing an ISO with it.

                    Appreciated,
