Thank you for telling us about that.
Is this forum accessibly through a newsreader or only via the web?

I'm glad you mentioned it. Yes, FireworksGuru Forum is accessible via NewsReader:

            http://www.fireworksguruforum.com/index.php?act=rssout&id=1

            Hope this helps!

              Web/RSS.

There is no indication on that site that it is accessible via a news
              reader.

Wanna rethink the CSS, please? I can't read any of the text except
the headings on the first page. The contrast is WAAAAAAY too low; I
can barely see that anything is there at all.

I have no idea whether things improve for individual posts. My first
response when seeing a site like this is, as always, to go elsewhere.

                  Hi Alan,

I think the poster meant news as in NNTP. A lot of people like the
organization and speed of nntp versus web-based forums... also makes it
easier to read than the darkness on that particular web forum Looks like
                  it's for young eyes only.

That is indeed what I meant. Thanks for making that clear.

it was really tiring on the eyes (and that was just reading one thread)....

                          Hi Win,

I'm sorry you do not like the default view. That is the default view for Guests. As a member you can choose from a variety of skins which include white backgrounds with black text forum skins. The forum is quite unique and will build over time as you can upload images to Topics/Threads and to a Gallery module and not be distracted by an overwhelming colorful interface when discussing Design related issues.

Oh! sorry for the confusion there.

We looked into NNTP support and decided the Forum is not meant for Newsgroup readers and the RSS feed should be sufficient. If the demand is high we can look into it later, for now, we are happy we got the forum up and running as is.

                            Thanks for the clarification Al!

                                And me.

May I ask why you decided the Forum is not meant for Newsgroup readers? Are we
a particular brand of human being?

For me it is a question of ease of accesibilty, both in receiving, reading and
responding to messages, with my own layout and font that are easy on my
                                particular eyes.

Your forum would be of much interest to me, if it was more accessible and not
such a strain on my eyes.

I'm guessing because the forum posts would include graphic examples of
                                  methods....

The main problem is when we tried implementing NNTP, we found that non-authenticated users can post which was a major security issue.

The second issue is would a NNTP user be aggravated with all the attachments and images within posts and topics? We didnt want to have angry NNTP users on the forum.

With that said, we tried to implement and failed, but we are happy where we stand today for V1. NNTP is still feature we would like to implement but not necessary as posters post a lot of images and attachments.

I also use read forums via newsgroup reader, but I dont think a Newsgroup reader would benefit much with our forum being accessed via NNTP. Would it beneficial to you? Do you like images/attachments added to posts?

Again, I'm sorry its not acceptable to you. We'll try again once we can smooth out the security issues related to NNTP.

I do not know about the technicalities of such things, but two of the
groups/forums I frequent, allow graphics, which are no problem for my
                                      newsreader.

So far, when needing to post an example/illustration of a problem to
macromedia.fireworks, I simply posted an URL to a page where I had uploaded the
image to. And fortunatley the answer often was presented the same way.

                                        Why?

If they promote the understanding of the post, sure. I participate in many
forums where images come through into NNTP just fine....

NNTP servers can have accounts and thus restrict access.

Well, I know that you were teasing Nadia but the point needs to be made:
I'm "only" 41 and have near perfect vision (20/20 in one eye and 15/20
in the other... been that way all my life since an operation as an
child). In short, I have very good vision and I hate the site's color
scheme because it's hard to read for me, even on my good quality CRT
monitor at home. On this "average" monitor at work, it's a downright
                                            pain to read.

On a forum site like that one, readability and usability should rank
much higher than "coolness" as design success criteria and this one
fails those miserably. I cannot read more than a few posts before I've
had it and want to move on. I read a lot of Web based forums on a day to
day basis and almost none of them have light (or not so light) text on
dark backgrounds and for good reason. It just doesn't work, period. The
few that do usually offer skinning features in order for users to choose
dark text on light background alternatives. Light text on dark
backgrounds is fine for short blurbs of text on a branding Web site but
not for a Web based forum. I mean, no offense but this is design
                                            principles 101...
