1. Re: Help -- output looks flat
Bill Hunt May 17, 2011 11:18 AM (in response to Jay Gladwell)Is that QT Player, where you are seeing the loss of Contrast?
If so, try playing in another player, like VLC. There are gamma issues with QT Player.
Good luck, and hope that is the problem.

2. Re: Help -- output looks flat
Jay Gladwell May 17, 2011 11:35 AM (in response to Bill Hunt)Yes, that was QT.
I installed VLC. That helped a little, but not much.
Also tried exporting to different file types. Best was lagarith uncompressed (is that redundant?).
So may I presume it's not anything I'm doing wrong?

3. Re: Help -- output looks flat
Harm Millaard May 17, 2011 12:02 PM (in response to Jay Gladwell)You are doing something wrong: Using QuiRcktime.
Just use H.264 instead of QT.

Jay Gladwell May 17, 2011 12:34 PM (in response to Harm Millaard)I'm sorry, Harm, I don't follow what you're saying.

5. Re: Help -- output looks flat
Harm Millaard May 17, 2011 1:24 PM (in response to Jay Gladwell)Don't use QT, QuiRcktime. Use H.264 for export. QuiRcktime got its name for a reason, its quircky-ness and especially the gammashift.

6. Re: Help -- output looks flat
Jay Gladwell May 17, 2011 1:31 PM (in response to Harm Millaard)Dang, I must be dumber than a sack a doorknobs.
I am, I think, using the H.264 for export. The player was Quicktime.
In the Export Settings under format I select H.264. Under Preset, what should I be selecting?

shooternz May 17, 2011 1:31 PM (in response to Jay Gladwell)Are both those screen grabs from the same computer / monitor?

8. Re: Help -- output looks flat
Jay Gladwell May 17, 2011 1:37 PM (in response to shooternz)Yes, they are.

9. Re: Help -- output looks flat
Harm Millaard May 17, 2011 2:14 PM (in response to Jay Gladwell)Jay,
Try with VLC or another player than QT, because the gamma-shift makes QT incomparable to other players. Do you still see such a difference when played with VLC or MPC?

10. Re: Help -- output looks flat
Jay Gladwell May 17, 2011 3:33 PM (in response to Harm Millaard)Yes, Harm, as I pointed out above, there is a slight improvement, but not enough to be significant. That's what has me stumped.

12. Re: Help -- output looks flat
joe bloe premiere May 18, 2011 6:54 AM (in response to Jay Gladwell)my images require slight adjusting,
Does this mean you have applied color correction effect(s)?
If yes, do you see an equalivalent gamma/contrast lift if you
export the timeline with the effect(s) disabled? Is this the only scene where you notice the difference on export,
or is the entire timeline affected?Do you have a color-calibrated external monitor connected for
comparison to what you are seeing on your computer monitor? -

Averdahl May 18, 2011 6:58 AM (in response to Jay Gladwell)No, further ideas or suggestions...?
1. In QuickTime Player, go to Edit > Preferences > QuickTime Preferences.
2. Click on the Advanced tab and change DirectX to Safe mode (GDI only).
3. Close QuickTime Player.
4. Open QuickTime Player and playback the file.
Did it help?

14. Re: Help -- output looks flat
Jay Gladwell May 18, 2011 7:22 AM (in response to Averdahl)Roger, you nailed it. Thank you!
Can you, please, explain what the difference in those two settings is?
Thanks, again!

15. Re: Help -- output looks flat
Jay Gladwell May 18, 2011 7:25 AM (in response to joe bloe premiere)Thanks, Joe for your input.
No, there were no color correction effects, just some minor tweaking with the levels.
No, this problem was seen acroos the timeline in every video upon export to H.264.
Yes, I have an external monitor that is color calibrated. Both monitor are extraordinarily close in color.

16. Re: Help -- output looks flat
Averdahl May 18, 2011 9:31 AM (in response to Jay Gladwell)Jay, great that it helped!
I dont know exact what the difference is, but i do know that it causes the issue you describe and that it has been an issue with many computers that hard-chrashed when playing QT-files, only because of this very setting. Quite often it caused BSOD's as well. When changed to "Safe mode (GDI only)" all problems went away so i have changed this very setting for years and have had no issues since i discovered it. All QT-media looks flat in QT Player when it is set to DirectX.

Bill Hunt May 18, 2011 10:44 AM (in response to Averdahl)Roger,
That is a good tip.Though I have had QT Player for many years, I have to admit to not fritzing with its setting, as I mainly have it for the CODEC's. I learned something from your instructions.
Thanks,
Hunt

18. Re: Help -- output looks flat
Lucas1112 May 23, 2011 9:02 AM (in response to Averdahl)Hey Roger.
That seems exactly like my problem but do you maybe have any idea why my Quick Time Player doesn't have Advanced tab? I also have quick time preferences in Quick Time Player button on the top bar and not in edit.
It is updated to the newest version.
Cheers.

Jay Gladwell May 23, 2011 9:43 AM (in response to Lucas1112)Open QT player > Edit > Preferences > QuickTime Preferences > Advanced (last tab on the far right).
