Colin Brougham May 20, 2011 11:11 AM (in response to Jay Gladwell)I like my MS Natural Ergo 4000 keyboard. It's a "split" model, but great for long hacking sessions: Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000
Whatever you do, don't waste your money on an "editing" keyboard. Candy-colored keys do not make you more efficient, but they do make you poorer.

Yeah, but I have such a crappy memory for remembering which keys do what. However, I do like that keyboard. My wife has one for her computer. I really enjoy using it.

Colin Brougham May 20, 2011 11:29 AM (in response to Jay Gladwell)You can create a cheat sheet my holding down the Ctrl and Shift keys when you go to Keyboard Shortcuts; a button labeled ">>Clipboard" will appear which will copy all your shortcuts to the clipboard. Click it, and paste into a document and format as you like.
The problem with the "editing" keyboards is that you're stuck with how they think you should use the keys. I remap my keys a lot, since I don't trust Adobe (no offense) to know what's best for me when I edit, and I'm certainly not going to pay two to three times the price for a "special" keyboard that is usually garbage anyway, and that doesn't let me reassign the keycaps.
If you keyboard edit enough, you'll find that muscle memory takes over, believe me; I'm still trying to break myself of Avid shortcuts, and I haven't worked on an Avid in over five years

shooternz May 20, 2011 4:18 PM (in response to Jay Gladwell)Actually.. I have a PremPro Key boards
and have had them for a number of years. (LogicPro)
Thing I like is they are very solid (heavy) and have a quality feel to the touch.
They also teach you the short cuts as you go.
I have a number of custom key settings for it as well

JSS1138 May 20, 2011 11:49 PM (in response to Jay Gladwell)I use a WorldTech editing keyboard myself. Despite Colin's admonition, I prefer it to a normal keyboard with all keys the same color. But then I don't do a whole lot of remapping of the commands, either.

Averdahl May 21, 2011 1:12 AM (in response to Jay Gladwell)I use the Apple Ultra Thin Alu Keyboard for Adobe Premiere Pro CS4/5 from Logickeyboard. I use the Mac keyboard on a PC because it is a great keyboard. I
had the standard non-colored Apple keyboard before i got the Logickeyboard. This logickeyboard is the best keyboard i have ever had.
I use the default shortcuts, but do add tons of not-already-mapped shortcuts and often invokes the Shift-key, so for me it is a non-issue with a colored keyboard. On the Apple keyboard i have F13-F19 as well.IE, seven more map-able keys than a standard PC keyboard.

davidbeisner2010 May 21, 2011 7:09 AM (in response to Jay Gladwell)I'll ditto the recommendation for the split keyboard... That's what I use whenever I can get it and I find my productivity and comfort level are both far higher with it versus a standard keyboard.
When I first started this stuff, I wanted one of those colored keyboards so bad! They just looked cool... Now I'm glad I don't have one because I think it would just be distracting to me and, as Colin said, muscle memory takes over REALLY quickly--I rarely use my mouse for things in PrPro anymore and I don't even have to think about what keys do what, either...

Jon-M-Spear May 21, 2011 7:34 AM (in response to davidbeisner2010)Logitech's illuminated keyboard for me!
Not only is it an absolutey beautiful, well-made keyboard, if that's what floats your boat, but for all those non-touch typists, it's superb in a dimmed editing environment.

Jay Gladwell May 21, 2011 10:03 AM (in response to Jon-M-Spear)You bring up a very valid point, J-MS. These old eyes of mine do have a challenge seeing the keys in dim, editing room light.
Thanks for sharing that! I didn't even know such a thing as an illuminated keyboard existed.
