1. Re: InDesign crashing following a simple deletion!
Eugene Tyson Jun 1, 2011 9:00 AM (in response to linziloop)Could be a number of reasons. I recently had this with footnotes.
From the page before the error I deleted all the pages to the end of the document.
Then I used Edit>Edit in Story Editor
Deleted the text that I wanted out of there.
I reflowed the text into new pages.
And it worked.
All other things tried (reset prefs, exported to idml etc.) didn't work.
Sometimes it's a wonky paragraph style - or bad coding obtained inside the table, or some sort of invisible character brought in from Word or other word processor and when it's removed InDesign doesn't know what to do and crashes.
I think in my case there was an error in the coding of the text frame and when text was reflown (by deleting or adding text) the coding didn't add up for InDesign and it crashed. -
2. Re: InDesign crashing following a simple deletion!
John Hawkinson Jun 1, 2011 9:11 AM (in response to linziloop)Terminology: This is a hang, not a crash. A crash is when the program or operating system detects a fault and exits; this also provides diagnostic information.
When it next hangs, go the Finder and launch Activity Monitor, select InDesign, and choose Sample Process. Upload the results to pastebin.com and post a link here.
Then we can tell you what InDesign was doing at the time of the hang, at least often.

3. Re: InDesign crashing following a simple deletion!
linziloop Jun 2, 2011 3:34 AM (in response to John Hawkinson)Thanks John, it helps to know the terminology. It seemed to be behaving this morning so I couldn't get that sample process report, but just now it has crashed (definitely a crash, I think!). Anyway, this was the diagnostic report on this occassion:

4. Re: InDesign crashing following a simple deletion!
John Hawkinson Jun 2, 2011 3:43 AM (in response to linziloop)Well, it looks like its font related:
...adobe.InDesign.Font Manager 0x221a5da7
So, try removing all your 3rd party fonts and only adding them back in as you need them?
Of course, you may have multiple different problems...

5. Re: InDesign crashing following a simple deletion!
linziloop Jun 2, 2011 4:16 AM (in response to John Hawkinson)Oooo really? Damn, that's a LOT of fonts to check through, it's work's computer. Eek! Will it likely be a font used in the document or could it just be any font?

6. Re: InDesign crashing following a simple deletion!
Eugene Tyson Jun 2, 2011 4:30 AM (in response to linziloop)Start with fonts only recently installed.
What font manager are you using?

7. Re: InDesign crashing following a simple deletion!
John Hawkinson Jun 2, 2011 4:31 AM (in response to linziloop)I suspect it could be any font. Sorry.
I'd suggest you think about font management software, but, well, that's been interacting poorly with InDesign lately...

8. Re: InDesign crashing following a simple deletion!
linziloop Jun 2, 2011 4:43 AM (in response to Eugene Tyson)We're just using Font Book. It's terribly badly organised in there, I've just sorted out some duplicates and deleted a load we don't use but now I' m having the same problem plus another - there is one particular document causing InDesign to crash as soon as I try to open it, this is the report I get for this fault:
Thanks for your help so far by the way guys, I would never have got this far on my own!
We've also tried opening this document on another colleagues mac and we get the same error :/

9. Re: InDesign crashing following a simple deletion!
Eugene Tyson Jun 2, 2011 6:11 AM (in response to linziloop)Does it come up with a specific error report? Like "Error Code #"

10. Re: InDesign crashing following a simple deletion!
John Hawkinson Jun 2, 2011 3:39 PM (in response to Eugene Tyson)Eugene, linziloop provided the full crash report. There is not a single digit error code for these kinds of problems.
linziloop, it really sounds like your file is just plain broken. InDesign crashes in a general initialization routine.
You can try opening the file in CS5.5, maybe.
Or contacting Markzware for their file $100 recovery service: http://markzware.com/blogs/indesign-file-recovery/recover-corrupt-indesign-file-recovery-s ervice/2011/05/25/.
You could also make the file available (you'll have to use your own hosting service, the forum doesn't allow file attachments anymore) and perhaps someone will take a look at it.

11. Re: InDesign crashing following a simple deletion!
linziloop Jun 22, 2011 1:57 AM (in response to John Hawkinson)Well folks, I sorted out all the fonts we have and InDesign seems to now be behaving itself, so there you go, lesson learned, be more organised with fonts! Thanks for all your help, it's VERY much appreciated x
