Acrobat X Pro v10.0.3 printing problem

    rproulxmtl Community Member

      Vista 64 / CS5.5 Master Suite / Acrobat X Pro v10.0.3

I just installed the 5.5 Master Suite which includes Acrobat X Pro.

EVERY TIME I print to Acrobat X it correctly creates the PDF document but then leaves the job in the Acrobat PDF print folder with a Status of "Error-Printing". The last column lists the printing port "COM1:". I guess I never noticed that Acrobat prints to a COM port...

Anyone know what might be causing this problem and how to fix it?

      Thanks

I just changed the printer port from COM1 to something called "XPSPort" (Local Port) and the problem appears to be fixed.

Why would Acrobat need a Serial port (or any Port) to print when it's all done internally?

If you mean to create a PDF from something else, you should print to the Adobe PDF printer and the port for the printer should be the PDF port that is configured something like "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop\*.pdf". As far as I know this has been the same port description for versions since about AA4.

If you are talking about printing from Acrobat to a printer, then you should be selecting whatever printer you normally use.

Yes, I am printing **to** the Adobe PDF printer.

Printer ports on a PC do not look like "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop\*.pdf". That's just the default destination folder for the printed PDF documents.

My currently configured and available printer ports are LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4, FILE, USB001 (Virtual printer port for Epson printer), IP_192.168.xxx (networked Laser printer address), and XPSPort (created by Microsoft's XPS Document Writer Printer).

If you go the printer's settings panel and check the properties for a printer you'll see a tab named "Ports" and that's where the available ports are found and can be selected.

For whatever reason Acrobat X's install configured COM1 as the port to print to, and this was causing it to hang (took longer than usual for the PDF to be generated). Now that I have changed the port to the XPSPort port it prints more quickly and does not leave behind error messages in the printer folder queue.

While this seems to have resolved the issue, it would still be interesting to know the cause of the problem.

              Thanks

The system I checked last night was XP Pro with AA5. I just checked VISTA with AA8 and found the port defined as Documents\*.pdf. On Win 7 with AA9, it is still Documents\*.pdf. If you are getting it to be a com or lpt port, then I suspect you have something messed up in the installation. Hopefully someone with AA X can confirm their settings, but I suspect it is the same as with AA8 and AA9 that I just gave you. The port info I gave you before and now came from the Ports tab in the printer settings. This port is described as the Adobe PDF port and has the printer with the same name. Unfortunately, noone around here has AA X to check.

I agree with Russell, my installation in Win7 also by default went to COM1 for Acrobat X. It doesn't have a "pdf" port available to select. Not sure what to choose. I am also having problems with pdf's not printing or taking a long time to spool then print. Printing takes up to 2-3 minutes.

I will see if I can find someone with a working AAX and see what they have on Win 7. In the meantime, I would hope some others would stop by and provide some insight.

Hmm... that's very interesting. I just booted up an XP system that has Acrobat 9 Pro on it and yes indeed the Port that Acrobat points to is Documents\*.pdf.

                      You're right :-)

                      (sorry I doubted you)

Any Idea how to create a port such as Documents\*.pdf if it wasn't done by the installer?

I just checked another system running Vista64 w/Acrobat Pro v9 and it has 2 Adobe created printing ports configured.

                        Port: Desktop\*.pdf

                        Description: Adobe PDF

                        Printer: [blank]

                        and

                        Port: Documents\*.pdf

                        Description: Adobe PDF

                        Printer: Adobe PDF

(the second one above is what's being used by Acrobat Pro 9)

Acrobat X did not create a printer port during its install and instead chose COM1 which appears to be an error (bug?).

My attempts to manualy create a printer port that match either of the above descriptions have failed.

Does anyone know how to fix this ?

                        Thanks

Just checked a Windows 7 computer on which I installed the CS5.5 Master Suite update and it too has Acrobat X Pro configured to print to COM1. Unless there's a good reason for that, I suspect there's an Acrobat X Pro installer bug that needs to be fixed.

Does Adobe have a procedure for submitting suspected bugs?

                            IT'S FIXED !!!

Seems it's a 'known issue' and Adobe has a support page that describes the problem and provides a solution:

                            http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/893/cpsid_89330.html

"Acrobat 10.0.1 patch changes the port of Adobe PDF printer to COM1 from  Adobe PDF Port Monitor. This issue affects all users on both 32- and  64-bit Windows platforms with a device connected to COM1 port or with  spooling enabled."

I followed the instructions and now I have both Desktop\*.pdf and  Documents\*.pdf Adobe PDF printer ports.

OK, its fixed now. I had to use the KB article and reinstall the HP printer driver to get it to work.

I wish when I searched for a solution that when I typed in "Acrobat X not printing" that article would come up.

                              Thanks to all!

Thanks for posting the info for everyone. It is again and example of where the initial release often has these little bugs for some reason. The updates often repair the problems and I wish I had thought to suggest it. I remember back about the font issue that was introduced in AA7.0 and fixed on later updates -- some fonts displayed a Greek, though they were not Greek. There were 4 font files involved.

It would appear from the Adobe support doc that the problem might have been caused by the 10.01 update and the inital realease might well have been ok. I searched for all recommended updates as soon as the CS5.5 suite install was completed. So I cannot say that the printer port issue slipped through the pre-release beta testing.

All's well that ends well :-)

But if Adobe cannot correct the error via another update then they should find a way to inform users on what they need to do to fix this error.
