1. Re: mixing frame rates; can menu video frame rate be diff from timeline video
Stan Jones Jun 15, 2011 9:47 AM (in response to nefl777)I would try it and see, but I'm not where I can test it.
Encore will transcode it, so I suggest you try it, and then look at the transcoded file to see what it is.
Remember that 24fps on DVD is essentially 29.97 with pull down. The 24fps has to have the right flag.
There are limits to what can be used for menus, and I don't recall what they are. But I don't think matching a timeline has anything to do with it. You can mix-match frame rates, etc in a project.

nefl777 Jun 15, 2011 10:50 AM (in response to Stan Jones)thanks for your answer!
What do you mean by "the 24fps has to have the right flag" ?
I'll study up on the limits of what can be applied to a motion menu, thanks for the tip.
ps. I would plunge in and try it but this particular asset costs a few $, so I thought I'd figure it out first before purchasing.

Giorgio1957 Jun 15, 2011 12:45 PM (in response to nefl777)Hi,
I'm afraid 'bout the output.
You are going to "mix" two different framerates but the output will be only one.
So you'll have a non linear sequence with the asset with different bitrate than the output.
you'll notice it expecially in fast action movie.
Trascode process will add the missing frames with a sort of "copy/paste"
It's just a point of view because, as Stan, I've never done it.
Ciao

raj2ashok Jun 16, 2011 6:54 AM (in response to nefl777)The best part of Blu-ray is that it supports different framerates and dimensions on the same discs. And Encore allows you to do that, Just create a Blu-ray project with 1920x1080, 24 fps settings, sothat encore can transcode your menu @ 24 fps. Now import your 1920x1080, 29.97 fps asset into the same project and cretate a timeline. Encore will create a 29.97fps timeline (because it reads framerate from the asset and create a timeline accordingly). Build to Blu-ray and verify the output. You don't need to bother about any framerate conversion.

nefl777 Jun 16, 2011 7:17 AM (in response to raj2ashok)Raj2ashok,
thanks so much for taking the time to spread that knowledge. Right now, I'm not at the point of creating Blu Ray disks but I certainly will refer back to this when I get there.
thanks!

Stan Jones Jun 16, 2011 8:42 AM (in response to raj2ashok)Just create a Blu-ray project with 1920x1080, 24 fps settings, sothat encore can transcode your menu @ 24 fps.
I've wondered about that. By "with ... settings" you are referring to the "default transcode" settings? And that is what will be used for motion menu rendering?

7. Re: mixing frame rates; can menu video frame rate be diff from timeline video
Jon Geddes Jun 16, 2011 9:00 AM (in response to Stan Jones)That is correct. The default transcode settings will be used for the motion menus (except for the fact that they will always be mpeg2, regardless if you set h264 or not). The main videos can be different than your menus. You can mix different framerates and resolutions on a single disc. You can manually set the transcode settings for each timeline, as well as pre-transcode your videos before importing them into Encore, and they will not be re-transcoded as long as they are Blu-ray compliant. Any DVD compliant video is also Blu-ray compliant.

8. Re: mixing frame rates; can menu video frame rate be diff from timeline video
MobyTrix Jun 17, 2011 11:51 AM (in response to nefl777)In my experience, if you're using a multi-page menu with a looping video asset behind it, Encore has the following bugs (which I've already reported via the official form):
- The video asset is always transcoded, even if it's in a perfectly legal format and Adobe recognizes it as not needing transcoding.
- The video asset is always transcoded to 30p. If you feed it a 24p or 30i file, it will get transcoded to 30p, no option to override.
If you're not using multipage menus, you might have better results.
