Acrobat Pro 9.3.0 and scanning using Kofax VRS

    Rodobe1984 Community Member

Hi there. I really hope someone is able to help - I'm totally stuck and I've already been though the Kofax customer support here in the UK.

When I scan into VRS using my Fujitsu fi-6770 scanner (VRS twain driver) the preview window pops up showing my scanned image. The preview image usually looks great but whenever I click ok to finish scanning I'll end up with a really terrible looking image in Acrobat.

I have attached an example below. I'm tring to scan colour photo's in greyscale and this is the result I'm getting. It appears that Acrobat is converting greyscale to black and white and I cannot figure out why this is happening

I really have tried everything. Kofax sent me a replacement scanner which was giving the same results tested in both Windows 7 and XP. I've had 4 engineer visits and tried numerous versions of Acrobat - all giving the results as above. I have been through the preferences panel in Acrobat but nothing stands out to me.

I know this is an issue with Acrobat as I can use the VRS driver in different software and I'll get the result image as expected. Acrobat is somewhat faster at communicating with the scanner than the other software though - ideally I'd like to solve this to help cut down processing time.

Specs of the machine I'm using are below. This is a HP Compaq dc7900 with updated drivers:

      Windows 7 Pro x64

      Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400

      4GB mem

Can anyone help? Anyone had similar problems in the past?

      Thanks in advance

      R

Have you tried checking off the "Optimize Scanned PDF" setting?

Optimize scanned PDF doesn't appear to be a setting, but window that appears after scanning to adjust various options. There doesn't appear to be a way to switch these options on or off. Could it be that Acrobat is running these settings automatically after each scan? If so, does anyone know how to permanently disable these? VRS should take care of everything, I just want Acrobat to create the PDF's.

            Thanks

Ah well, the solution to this issue seems to be to uninstall Adobe Acrobat and go with different software. It's a shame really - that a product shipped with Adobe and Kofax stamps all over it doesn't do what its supposed to

Kofax Express saves the day at the expense of buying new software..

If you are thinking about buying one of these 'certified' Adobe scanners be prepared for problems and also prepare yourself for the added price tag to get the thing operational.

Adobe.. talk to Kofax please, it would probably help.

                Try scanning using Custom Scan:

File -> Create PDF -> From Scanner -> Custom Scan

Click Options button adjacent to quality slider in Document Settings section. Choose "Custom Settings" and choose JPEG in Color/Grayscale settings.

This is as good as wrapping the image from scanner inside a PDF. Acrobat doesn't process the image in this case.

I think something is getting confused. You ahve at least 3 image capture

applications, Scandall that comes with Fujitsu, Kofax VRS and Adobe Acrobat.

If you are scanning directly to Acrobat, you are not using VRS at all. If

you are using Scandall, you are making a tiff then converted by Distiller to

                  a pdf.

When you go to scan a document, are you launching an application from your

computer screen or a button on the scanner to a predefined folder? Also

check your pdf properties and it will tell you the application that created

the file if applicable and also the pdf producer. That will help figure out

                  what is going on.

Thanks but I've tried this already. The results are varied even with the JPEG set in greyscale settings. I've actually been through all of the various image options trying to get a good result. Occasionally the photo on the front side scans correctly while the reverse side looks as if it has been through a black and white photocopier. The engineer had the same trouble when scanning, its not just me! I'm not filled with confidence when a engineer shrugs his shoulders and says "I don't know"

The only way I have been able to get around this is by downloading and installing the trial version of Kofax Express.

Been using Kofax Express all afternoon today and the images look great. I've spent more than two weeks trying to get this sorted, two weeks of putting jobs on hold and telling customers they'll have to wait..

I can't possibly wait any longer. If this is a common problem then someone needs to provide the documentation. Either way I've spent a lot longer on this than I'm prepared to..

I have Scandall, VRS and Acrobat.

I have configured the VRS source to be the attached scanner "fi-6770"which by default uses a twain driver. VRS is a scanning interface only..

This means I'm able to use the VRS interface even when scanning into Acrobat. The VRS window pop's up giving me the various image adjusting options.

If I use Scandall Pro I'm not able to set VRS as the source. I just get a dialogue box showing scanner not found and a button to rescan the bus. Doing so does nothing.

With Acrobat i'm getting the problems I mentioned in my first post.

I can scan using the twain driver but this doesn't give me the options VRS will. I need to be able to deskew, crop and use background smoothing.
