I understand recording to an SD card is not recommended.
I question that understanding. Among non-professionals (the market this camera was clearly intended for), and if you consider DSLR and Panny's AF-100 even for a rapidly growing number of professionals, recording to SD card has become the norm.
Recording to tape has become outdated, and any camera that does so would not be the best invenstment in today's media world.
Thanks. TBH I like mini HD but I take what you say about tape. I'm a micro-SME and we invested in the Z1 and a whole bunch of new equipment about 4 years ago just before HDD/ card camcorders really took off and it'll be a year or two longer before we can reinvest in an tapeless camcorder of Z1 equivalent or higher.
Re my question, I'm going by reviews about the SD card not as good as SDHC and SDXC card options. It's for capturing on the hoof. I've looked at DSLR options but they tended to be more expensive (and I suppose I'm mentally stuck in the past where DSLR results were a bit jumpy and stuttery). The result of my research led me to believe the specs/ cost ratio of the Panny was a workable solution. It has a mic port and there's manual overide over zoom, etc, as well. A key purchasing feature is that it is available in the airport duty free shop, where I'm planning to buy it at a good saving on my way to my holidays.
I'm not stuck in tramlines. I'd really welcome any views about alternatives I could research that PPr CS5 captures/ imports from without problems. I'm looking to invest around £600 (+/-1,000USD).
I would warn against buying at a tax-free shop on the airport, because in my experience, even 'tax-free', their prices are a lot higher than elsewhere and you have the problem with service and warranty if that is ever needed. Schiphol Airport has a huge 'tax-free' shopping area and I have never found a price better than anywhere on the internet, in general prices on the airport are around 20 - 30% higher than somewhere else.
Er, um some of my clients are in the duty free industry (but brownie points for your comments about Schiphol airport; that's where my key client is based...) Seriously, thanks as ever for your wise words. Yes I know the arguments but, in the EU, it's a case of where you're buying compared against your local high street/ national prices. On this occasion the deal is reasonable against the local shops or internet (which can have its own problems). That said, any advice from anyone on alternatives to the SD900 I could research would be really welcome.
Did you have a look here (it is in Dutch, but you get the gist of it): http://tweakers.net/pricewatch/cat/318/videocameras.html#filter:NY47CsMwEETvMrUIMvIvOoAhha uUIYUibSGQP0jGDhjdPSuIq2V23gxz4hPN7B4uQb_QdwpvgSU6ioOn4KCxezoSBNboLY1-hpYCyS6RRvOFbi5xORTI buSeK9l_q2oU5ztZqhO_Bx82imyduKu6nKmEUcmbZHAqteh6FlnwpLYQuwmFaKsaOecf

Ah, I get you now. When you said SD I normally take that to include all varieties, not specifically the original.
Here's a recommendation that should provide trouble free service.
