1. Re: Why does some text convert to outlines when opening a PDF in AI?
Nini Tjäder Jul 11, 2011 3:39 PM (in response to mpc999)PDFs are not supposed to be edited as a rule.
Lots of odd things can happen to text (but also other objects) when you open a PDF - that is not a pdf with the editable Illustrator file saved within it - and try to edit it.
Illustrator is not a general purpose editor of pdf files.
PDF files are supposed to be an end-format, not a format that you edit.
What happens to text in a pdf when opened in Illustrator is perfectly normal. There isn't really much you can do about it except recreate the text in Illustrator from scratch, with the desired font, and re-export to the pdf-version you need.

Scott Falkner Jul 11, 2011 4:55 PM (in response to mpc999)Try exporting your PDF to a version that does not require flattening. Try making sure all text in InDesign is on its own layer and that it is the topmost layer.

praveen mds Jul 12, 2011 12:12 AM (in response to mpc999)It seems because of the font you using is openType and the lines consist of ligatures, (characters like "fi", "ff") These are made outlines in illustrator. If u remove those ligatures in indesign it would be fine for you with illustrator.

mpc999 Jul 12, 2011 7:44 AM (in response to praveen mds)Thank you, Praveen. You have the answer.
When I turn ligatures off, none of the type is outlined by Illustrator.
I appreciate your answer, because I never would have thought that Illustrator can't honor a ligature glyph, which is just another glyph in the character set after all, when opening a PDF.
