John T Smith Jul 21, 2011 8:36 AM (in response to Michelmnr)To go from VHS (analog) to computer (digital) you need to digitize the audio/video stream
If your VHS/DVD player does not have Firewire out, you must buy new hardware
Old forum discussion, message now gone, but here's the summary
.
Matt with Grass Valley Canopus in their tech support department stated that the model 110 will suffice for most hobbyist. If a person has a lot of tapes that were played often the tape stretches and the magnetic coding diminishes. If your goal is to encode tapes in good shape buy the 110, if you will be encoding old tapes of poor quality buy the model 300
.
Both the 110 and 300 are two way devices so you may output back to tape... if you don't need that, look at the model 55

Ann Bens Jul 21, 2011 11:34 AM (in response to Michelmnr)I second John recommendation: Get a Grass Vally converter. It will convert your footage to dv-avi.
DVD recorders often make a mess of the way they encode.

3. Re: Can I use Video recording format In PP CS4 and how
Michelmnr Jul 21, 2011 6:05 PM (in response to John T Smith)Thank you, now I'm trying to remember how I capture my tape! I know I captured my old analogue tapes, not VHS with my Fire Bird card and yes with a firewire cable with good result. But with my VHS tapes (original) I don't have a firewire socket on my player so must have capture through the RF cable probably and so the poor quality! I gave up on the idea for a long time although they are family memories. Now I'm more interested in using the good result I have in premiere but have problem with the file format on the dvd ram after Itransfered the "edited" portion from the recorder's hard drive

Michelmnr Jul 21, 2011 9:14 PM (in response to Michelmnr)Thank you John and Ann, ( I only saw John's message in my inbox!) Apart movies I recorded from the TV and don't mind too much loosing, I have perhaps only a dozen of tapes I want to work with, I went to the Grace Valley site and the avdc 55 is already worth AUD$ 2 to 300. the 110 and 300 are of course more expensive. I understand what Ann says with the potential mess other methods may be. After doing some more search I realised (and remembered) those file on my DVD Ram are .vro file. There seems to be plenty of posts about them, some as simple as changing the extension to .mpg, others to get converter ( I imagine that is during the conversion when the "mess" may be occurring). I can see the avdc would make my life easy but would try to avoid this expense if I can work around it!. One such post felt that the file should be converted to .vob rather than mpg4? - I think this was for editing dvd. but if I was going to do all this through adobe suite mpg4 may be better? Thanks again

Michelmnr Jul 25, 2011 7:57 AM (in response to Michelmnr)please read only the last few lines if you're not curious ( I can't understand what's is happening but it's working ok for what I need to do - Thank you)
I realise I'm replying to myself! But I wanted to update my situation. I have borrowed a combo DVD VHS recorder from my neighbour and started to put my tapes through. I was very happy to see PPCS4 accept these Video_TS files, conform them and let me edit them, (actually they were the VTS_01-0 to whatever is the number of the identical file but with the increment of "1" for any added file. Then I got really confused when I found that the VTS-01-0,1,,2,3etc were the same? I also realise that the Video_TS file seem to have the whole lot in itself! Hmm, ... At least I did - I have this folder on my other screen and tried to play it again as it only shows two KB in size! but when I played it before I played it for about 2 minutes and yet the time indicator on Media player had hardly move telling me that It must have the whole content of my recording (1 hour and 5 minute [XP recording] for better quality; yes it takes me three recording for a 3 hours tape) Well now I'm very confused it won't play anymore and Window media player tells me "Unknown DVD" I think there is a better way to see the full name of my files, but so far I know with a right click on it that show me an option to scan and shows the whole name of the file...I think somewhere there is a "show Extension"! I hope someone can tell me what's going on!
Ok I had another look at this. The first playable file in the Video TS folder is VTS-01-0.ifo It shows a size of 54 KB (same in property!) Then there are 4 similar files VTS-01-(1 to 4).VOB showing all 1,048,512 kb (in property " .99GB") And the 5th files VTS-01-5.VOB with 360,800 (in property it says 352 MB, but the four previous files in property show .99GB! As I said b4 I can play all these on media player 11 and they all seem to show the same progression bar (length) speed at the bottom! What really gets me out of all this is the first hour I recorded on my DVD RW was perfect, I got 4 VTS files all different and in the right chronological order.
I repeat all these 6 files shows the same content.
I'm going nut! I transferred all this .vob file in PPcs4 (ifo would not work) and it was ok they are not the same, and this time they were very quick to transfer with no conformation process! I left the rest of the msg in case someone wants to see what can be the trouble. -

John T Smith Jul 25, 2011 9:01 AM (in response to Michelmnr)Read Bill Hunt on editing a VOB/MPG file http://forums.adobe.com/thread/464549?tstart=0
Edit Vob http://premierepro.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ:How_do_I_import_VOB_files_/_edit_a_DVD%3FDo be aware that DVD recorders sometimes do ODD things to the VOB files they create

7. Re: Can I use Video recording format In PP CS4 and how
Michelmnr Jul 26, 2011 7:52 AM (in response to John T Smith)Thank you John, I had a look had Bill's and he seems to recommend to convert the .vob files for best result. That still does not help me to understand the structures of these VTS folder and playing with it confuses me even further as for one hour recording I usually get 4 vts...vob files and if I plays them one by one they all look the same but if I import them in PP cs4 they're what they should be 4 different segments of my recording . So I think I'll leave the understanding to the experts and count myself lucky that this work for me!

8. Re: Can I use Video recording format In PP CS4 and how
John T Smith Jul 26, 2011 8:28 AM (in response to Michelmnr)I don't know the exact details (my Camera and Codec List http://www.pacifier.com/~jtsmith/PProCamera.txt has a link to the DVD Demystified FAQ) but due to the file system used a VOB file may be no larger than 1 or 2 Gigabytes (I think 1Gig, but not 100% sure)
When you double click a VOB on a DVD to play it, the video will always start with the 1st VOB since they have some sort of "file pointer" routing built inside the VOB... of course when editing on a PPro timeline, you are seeing what is inside the file, not the file pointer routing
As well as the general file pointer routing in each VOB file, the 1st one contains a lot of EXTRA stuff that can cause problems for editing, hence Hunt's note to convert
If you are able to edit the VOB's with no extra steps... do that

9. Re: Can I use Video recording format In PP CS4 and how
Michelmnr Jul 27, 2011 4:59 AM (in response to John T Smith)Thank you John, this make a lot of sense in view of what I experienced. I seems that I'm perhaps a little lucky to get it working this far although I have not yet produce a dvd from it. I'm too busy churning my tapes in XP mode at this stage. 1983 it's a long time and I was not really a Thecho so May have used middle of the range tapes for the job! as such I get a lot of washed out scenery. Yet there is some memorable footage in it that are worth saving. Thanks again to make this understandable for me
