    No audio or h.264 video?

MP3 audio and H.264 video (embedded in the epub with InDesign CS5.5) does not appear at all in ADE1.8. Is this as designed or a bug? I would expect ADE to at least match the capabilities of iBooks and InDesign.

Hi David - It's by design. It is a slight regression in functionality from ADE 1.7 - however the way it was supported in ADE was not technically as HTML5 audio/video tag but as an object tag that used by the FlashPlayer to play a SWF file. We are working on a more standards compliant (EPUB 3.0/HTML 5) viewer technology that will enable eBooks with audio/video content to play as intended. However at this time we don’t have a firm date on when it will be available broadly or when it can be incorporated into our next generation of viewers.

Also, it will be great if you have any pointers on specific data regarding how many eBook titles are out there with audio/video content (this will help our feature prioritization process). Currently, the planned ship version of ADE 1.8 isn’t likely to support audio/video content, although strong data might help push the priority of this feature.

I am an Adobe Certified Instructor and Adobe Certified Professional, and I provide support in the Adobe InDesign Forum. In that forum, we've experienced a marked increase in inquiries about creating EPUB since InDesign CS5.5 came out. Quite a few of them have asked about video and audio support since that is a feature in InDesign CS5.5 which can be used in some of the more advanced eReaders (iOS devices and Color Nook, in particular). They are very disappointed to find they cannot preview these EPUB files in Adobe Digital Editions, which seems to promise a WYSIWYG EPUB previewer.

I think this should be a high priority in your plans for Digital Editions. If people don't find those features supported, they will move on to third-party EPUB previewing software and ADE will be left in the dust. Already, some of the EPUB experts have been suggesting that you should use other previewers since ADE is becoming "long in the tooth."

I am also and Adobe Certified Instructor and Adobe Certified Professional and I concur with both Steve and David, ADE really needs to be updated to support the multimedia features of ePub 3.

At the moment there are not very many readers that support audio/video, but that number is only going to increase in the coming year. Due to the lack of updates for ADE, I hope that the next version has this support so we don't have to wait years for a feature that people want/expect today,
