1. Re: How to correctly configure QuickTime 7.6.9's many options for PPRO 5.03 please?
Harm Millaard Jul 26, 2011 9:50 PM (in response to tfi productions 44)Ideally you should not even install QuiRcktime on a Windows machine. All too often you destroy the 64 bit nature of PR by using 32 bit QT.

tfi productions 44 Jul 26, 2011 10:00 PM (in response to Harm Millaard)hello Harm,
well that was fast...
i thought quicktime was a necessary component for PPRO and AE...
should i just uninstall quicktime 7.6.9 and just roll with it then?
maybe it's the quick time that's been killing me all along
because (i just remembered this) when i use ccleaner the error logs
are always regarding qt32 stuff?
thanks,
j

Harm Millaard Jul 26, 2011 10:30 PM (in response to tfi productions 44)AVCHD can be edited without the use of QuiRcktime.

tfi productions 44 Jul 26, 2011 10:34 PM (in response to Harm Millaard)hello again Harm,
does AE cs5 10.02 require quircktime?
if it does, how do i reconcile the issue?
thanks a billion,

6. Re: How to correctly configure QuickTime 7.6.9's many options for PPRO 5.03 please?
Colin Brougham Jul 27, 2011 6:05 AM (in response to tfi productions 44)Harm is a knowledgeable guy, but the repeated bias and resulting misinformation on this topic is getting a bit tiresome...
Yes, QuickTime is 32-bit. No, QuickTime is not required for Premiere Pro; it's not required for After Effects either, IIRC. In both programs, you will lose import and export capability for QuickTime. If you don't need this, you don't need this, but only you can decide that.
Also, just because a file has an MOV extension, that doesn't necessarily mean that QuickTime is required. For example, DVCPRO HD MOVs or Canon DSLR MOVs are both supported natively by Premiere Pro, which means that you don't need QuickTime installed, and they're also handled by Premiere Pro's native 64-bit importers. However, if you ever had to deliver something in a QuickTime container, you wouldn't be able to since you didn't have QT installed.
If you have the free QT Player, you don't need QT Pro; that doesn't add anything additional as far as Premiere Pro is concerned.
The QuickTime settings you originally posted have no effect on Premiere Pro; they are for the standalone player only. Setting the video to Safe Mode has somewhat taken care of gamma issues, and tweaking the audio latency has somewhat fixed some audio sync issues with H.264 MP4 playback, but again--they don't affect PPro.
The bottom line is that if you need QuickTime and MOV support as part of your workflow, you'll want to have QuickTime installed; having it installed does not negatively detract from Premiere Pro's performance in any way, despite all the cutesy names and erroneous reports to the contrary. The choice is yours, but hopefully your choice is influenced by correct information.

7. Re: How to correctly configure QuickTime 7.6.9's many options for PPRO 5.03 please?
Jeff Bellune Jul 27, 2011 7:03 AM (in response to Colin Brougham)I'm another data point to back up Colin's assessment of Quicktime. Quicktime has worked well with Pr here for a very long time now. There have been version mismatches over the years that have caused some conflicts with Pr or Windows software in general, but no more than some graphics card drivers and often less than 3rd-party hardware drivers.
I usually leave the QT options at the default settings. The only time I change them is if I have to troubleshoot video playback problems in QT Player itself.

That's one reason it's best not to install it if you don't actually need it.

tfi productions 44 Jul 27, 2011 9:09 AM (in response to Jeff Bellune)hello Jeff and Colin,
thanks for commenting...
would you have any information on the fact that:
"""maybe it's the quick time that's been killing me all along
because (i just remembered this) when i use ccleaner the error logs

i am away from my desktop station until august 11 so i can't get you actual log files,
but i'm pretty sure what was happening was that PPRO would hang on editing when applying effect (including NEAT VIDEO
(which i know needs a lot of juice)
and then i would kill the process, or i would close PPRO and it wouldn't close in TaskManager,
the funny thing is is that after i'd kill the process and reopen PPRO, the effect would be 'rendered' on the timeline
(even the NEATVIDEO)...
however, it wasn't until being bored that i was really reading everything that CCLEANER was cleaning.
i have it set to clear out the error log files and lo and behold most of the log files were regarding QT32 stuff...
this is why i investigating everything i can about QuicTime's interaction with CS5 5.03...
thanks again for helping,
j
perhaps it's the effects that are crashing QT32???

10. Re: How to correctly configure QuickTime 7.6.9's many options for PPRO 5.03 please?
Colin Brougham Jul 27, 2011 9:16 AM (in response to tfi productions 44)I'd be curious to see what the logs say. The application you might see running in task manager--Adobe QT32 Server.exe--is Adobe's bridge application that lets the 64-bit PPro core application interface with the 32-bit QuickTime application. If you're not using any QuickTime or other media files that requires it (which sounds like is the case with you and your AVCHD media), there shouldn't be any reason that it would cause a problem. Sometimes it will stick around in memory (requiring a kill-off) if Premiere Pro crashes or is force killed, but that's not an indication that it's the culprit of the crash. I would be more inclined to blame the media itself--which is resource intensive--and the plug-in--which is also resource intensive.
When you get a chance, post the CCleaner logs; I'm curious as to what it might be wiping out.

tfi productions 44 Jul 27, 2011 9:52 AM (in response to Colin Brougham)hello Colin,
i'll post the logs when in get back to NY on august 12th
1) to clarify: are you saying that if i'm working with avchd footage in PPRO 5.03 that
i don't need the Adobe QT32 Server.exe (which there are 2 of) running and i CAN kill them off?
2) is this the same with AE 10.02?
this would be cool
thanks again,
j

Colin Brougham Jul 27, 2011 10:06 AM (in response to tfi productions 44)1) to clarify: are you saying that if i'm working with avchd footage in PPRO 5.03 that
i don't need the Adobe QT32 Server.exe (which there are 2 of) running and i CAN kill them off?
Well, for one, there shouldn't be two of them running if you're just running Premiere Pro (we'll figure that one out later), and two, there's no need to (and you shouldn't) kill them off while PPro is running. Again, if they're getting stuck in memory after a crash, etc., that's something that needs to be explored, but under normal circumstances you can and should just ignore those processes. Killing them off is like to either a) cause no change, e.g. improvement, or b) cause a crash.
But, yes: AVCHD is not using QuickTime.
2) is this the same with AE 10.02?
AE uses the QT32 Server process, as well; this may be why you have two instances, since each application launches its own instance.

tfi productions 44 Jul 27, 2011 10:11 AM (in response to Colin Brougham)hello Colin,
thanks for the clarification,
at this point i cannot tell whether the 2nd instance is from AE and PPRO being open
i will have to check upon returning home
but for now i am very happy about the answers
thanks a ton, will report back in 2 weeks
