1. Re: Develop settings lost after re-importing folder of DNG files
Geoff the kiwi Jul 29, 2011 7:48 PM (in response to Seven_D)The develop settings are only in the catalog unless you have autowrite to xmp checked in Catalog settings or you have selected image files and saved the develop data to the selected files with Cmd/Ctrl-S.
When you remove files from the catalog the develop data goes too after a short period (allows for undos) so if you have a backup catalog with the files before they were removed you could open that and save out the develop settings and then open your working catalog and read the metadata,
I keep all my files in Lightroom as it is my file manager rather than the OS. Then I (hopefully) know where everything is and what is happening to my images.
Your type of error has been made by most, including me, and is part of the learning curve for digital imaging!!

2. Re: Develop settings lost after re-importing folder of DNG files
Seven_D Jul 29, 2011 8:15 PM (in response to Geoff the kiwi)Thanks. I do have autowrite to XMP checked. - I learned that lesson a few months ago!
I will see if I can use an older backup to recover the settings. I have never done that before, but I know where my catalog backups are located. If you can give some advice on that, I would appreciate it. I don't want to lose other DNG edits in the process.
Correct me if I'm wrong - but it appears that if I ever do want to remove a previously imported folder from LR for whatever reason - I should just edit the RAW files without converting to DNG. I know DNGs are more compact, but at least the sidecar files associated with the RAW files will always be there! This is more important to me than conserving disk space!

just try it on one or tow files to test. Also look at "Read Metadata from file" in the current catalog first with ine file to see if that helps. Did you have a Prest applied when importing like Zeroed?...... None is the best for importing files with dev settings already applied.
I use DNG exclusively and haven't experienced your issue so review your import settings as mentioned.
