westonwoodbury Aug 2, 2011 11:02 PM (in response to Steve from NY)Steve,
My guess is that your FCP clip is in a format similar to this thread from earlier today, which unfortunately isn't cross platform without buying a solution.

You may want to join the conversation there, Colin might have some options he can guide you through with more information from you.

BVX3001 Aug 2, 2011 11:03 PM (in response to Steve from NY)What format was the original recording done in?
I had thousands of XDCam EX files that unfortunately had been converted into .mov's, and needed to buy a codec to work with them.

3. Re: A FCP user gave me .mov's that PP CS5 cant open, what can I do? (File link enclosed)
Steve from NY Aug 2, 2011 11:06 PM (in response to Steve from NY)They are 1920/1080 but dont know the original format. I've had this problem in the past. There must be a way to convert them.
I tryed installing Calibrated(Q) XD Decoder but it locks up my system. I can see the video with "Calibrateds" watermark but it crashes it.
Any way to convert these from my PC?

4. Re: A FCP user gave me .mov's that PP CS5 cant open, what can I do? (File link enclosed)
westonwoodbury Aug 2, 2011 11:26 PM (in response to Steve from NY)If it's XDCAM footage that's been logged & transfered with FCP, when I ran into this on a FCP project I was given, the Calibrated decoder worked, but I didn't want to buy it.
Interestingly enough, Avid Media Composer on PC could read the footage. So I ended up linking to it inside of that, and then exporting it back out to something Premiere could read, using MC as a transcoder. I was able to relink all my files in premiere to the transcoded copies.
It would be simpler to find a Mac and just transcode it there, but that's one way I did on on the PC without buying any extra codecs.

5. Re: A FCP user gave me .mov's that PP CS5 cant open, what can I do? (File link enclosed)
BVX3001 Aug 2, 2011 11:59 PM (in response to Steve from NY)If you tried XD Decode you must think that they originated as XDCam then, right? That is the codec I had to buy and once it was installed everything was transparent and normal. So I'm not sure what the crashing is all about, assuming your system meets the minimal tech. requirements. I'd give it another try if you haven't already.
Your best hope would be to locate the original camera files, which could very well have been deleted following the .mov copying via the Mac. I've had no problem with native XDCam in Premiere. The next best solution might be to have that FCP user do the conversions to another file format you can use. Hopefully there aren't thousands of them.
Firstodd, that's very interesting that your Avid MC was able to work with those files. I just found this from an Avid doc of last year: "If you want to play the exported movie in QuickTime, you need to purchase a third-party QuickTime plug-in. Avid recommends the Calibrated{Q} XD Decode from Calibrated Software"
Still, for the $80 I spent a year ago, XD Decode was well worth it in time saved. I see the price has gone up $50 since then though.

westonwoodbury Aug 3, 2011 12:05 AM (in response to BVX3001)Yes, maybe they made an improvement since then, I don't know.
I do know for a fact it was XDCAM footage (I shot it) and it was logged and transfered through FCP, and then that media was handed off to me.
Premiere Pro couldn't open it, nothing on my system would. But AMA on Avid read it just fine, without Calibrated installed.
Some sort of fluke?

Yes, we need what type of camera/footage you are working with. The XD Decode won't work if it isn't XD footage, although it shouldn't crash your system, either.

Colin Brougham Aug 3, 2011 5:18 AM (in response to Steve from NY)Any way to convert these from my PC?
Indeed; losslessly, too.
- Download this file: xdcamfix.zip
- Extract the EXE and BAT files in the same folder as the MOVs.
- Double-click the BAT file.
- Profit.
What you've done is rewrapped the MOVs as MXF files that will import into Premiere Pro CS5/CS5.5 (I think even CS4) and edit MUCH better than the Calibrated(Q) decoded MOVs would, since these will be handled by a 64-bit importer.
Let me know if there are any problems.

The footage is from an ex1 and was originally recorded on sdxc cards. The bat file didnt work but thanks

BVX3001 Aug 3, 2011 3:12 PM (in response to Colin Brougham)That worked better. I was going to check it out on my old laptop but it appears to be a 64 bit app. I'll try it on my edit system later.
So could you pass along where it came from? Something you wrote maybe?
Thanks.

Colin Brougham Aug 3, 2011 3:11 PM (in response to Steve from NY)Sweet beans. The resultant MXFs should be roughly the same size as the MOVs, so if they are, you should be good to go. Just plop one into PPro and that will be the easiest way to know.
Apologies for the epic fail on the archive

17. Re: A FCP user gave me .mov's that PP CS5 cant open, what can I do? (File link enclosed)
Colin Brougham Aug 3, 2011 3:14 PM (in response to BVX3001)FFmbc is 32-bit only, I believe... so, should work on either 32-bit or 64-bit Windows.
Nah, I can't code to save my life. FFmbc is an offshoot of FFmpeg, in a slightly more professional/broadcast vein. Read more here: ffmbc - FFMedia Broadcast - Google Project Hosting
I've just worked (a lot) on trying to figure out how to use it to create files that Premiere Pro will accept. It's got quite a few tricks up its sleeves, and they're really coming in useful as more and more FCP editors switch over.

It would be really something if all of your re-wrapping
batch scripts could be found in one location along with
a brief description of their use! -
