1. Re: how many 'lanes' does a pc quadro 4000 use, please?
Harm Millaard Aug 3, 2011 1:33 AM (in response to tfi productions 44)1. No sense in installing two Quadro 4000 cards, since Adobe only uses one. It can not use a second GPU. Each card uses 16 lanes.
2. A number of lanes are used by SATA3 and USB3 connectors, but I'm not sure about the number.
The X58 has 36 lanes, so if you install only 1 Quadro 4000, you have enough free lanes left without using too much bandwidth. If you install a useless second Quadro 4000, you may get into a situation that bandwidth is limited, but that may be solved by throttling down your video cards to 8x instead of 16x. Why you would want to do that escapes me however.

2. Re: how many 'lanes' does a pc quadro 4000 use, please?
tfi productions 44 Aug 3, 2011 8:12 AM (in response to Harm Millaard)hello,
is there a way i can tell
or is there a way i can control
the amount of lanes each of the quadro's use?
i would like to see what's going on underneath the hood...
fwiw: i am using the 2nd gpu to have access to 4 monitors in PPRO
to stretch out / undock panels to make for a more efficient editing space
to eliminate as many problems as possible with drivers
i just went ahead and got a 2nd quadro...the school is paying for it
again--thanks for your insight,
jeffrey

3. Re: how many 'lanes' does a pc quadro 4000 use, please?
Scott Chichelli Aug 3, 2011 9:29 AM (in response to tfi productions 44)each quadro uses 16x lanes it has to be installed into a 16x slot that is 16x electrically
you didnt need a 2nd quadro (or a first to begin with) a 2nd cheap card would have worked about as well

4. Re: how many 'lanes' does a pc quadro 4000 use, please?
tfi productions 44 Aug 3, 2011 11:17 AM (in response to Scott Chichelli)hello,
i got the quadro to start doing s3d work
the 2nd quadro so i can run the same graphics drivers...
and 4 monitors for workflow efficiency especially if
going back and forth between AE and PPRO...
though a bit pricey, seems logical to me...
do you know where i can 'see' / 'control' the amount of 'lanes'
each card uses (re: Harm saying to 'throttle back the gpus')
this rig is only used for editing video
i have a separate rig for audio production
thanks again for helping,
jeffrey

5. Re: how many 'lanes' does a pc quadro 4000 use, please?
Harm Millaard Aug 3, 2011 12:28 PM (in response to tfi productions 44)Throttling back is not user controllable. If is done by the hardware if it is starved for lanes.

6. Re: how many 'lanes' does a pc quadro 4000 use, please?
tfi productions 44 Aug 3, 2011 1:30 PM (in response to Harm Millaard)hello,
in terms of throttling
i see that being done with evga precision monitoring the gpus
i've read not to try to oc the gpu because of temp problems
(especially if i'm already concerned about temp problems)
thinking outloud:
are there any good nvidia gpus that use x8 pcie link
that still use the same Quadro drivers?
(this way i can still use 4 monitors, still do s3d editing
and still have 8 more available 'lanes')
thanks for the continued help,
(sorry if the question is &*(*%*!)
jeffrey
