Harm Millaard Aug 11, 2011 1:03 AM (in response to Steve from NY)Some of his voltages are a bit high. Depending on the memory modules installed, there may be no need to go all the way to 1.65 V, it may well be that 1.5 V is enough. It is in my case at least. Also the core voltage is pretty high. I got it at 1.2875 V and his 1.35 seems pretty high to me. But then I'm only at 3.7 GHz with a simple 920.

5. Re: I just built a 6 core 970 @ 3.2, BEGINNER NEEDS OVERCLOCKING ADVISE
Harm Millaard Aug 11, 2011 2:44 AM (in response to Steve from NY)Steve,
If you go to the results page of PPBM5 Benchmark and you select i7-9xx CPU's and limit the search to 6 cores only, you will see that the best OC'ed 970 is at rank 2 (JES4) whereas the 970 at stock speed comes out at rank 42 (Nan Toskey). I think that says it all, even though there are other differences between the two systems.

RjL190365 Aug 11, 2011 7:07 AM (in response to Steve from NY)Steve,
The "C0/C1 versus D0 stepping" actually refers to the older quad-core i7-9xx Bloomfield 45nm CPUs, such as the i7-920, 930, 940, 950 and 960. The i7-970 is a hexa-core CPU of the 32nm Gulftown core - and Gulftown CPUs always have stepping codes of B0/B1.

9. Re: I just built a 6 core 970 @ 3.2, BEGINNER NEEDS OVERCLOCKING ADVISE
JEShort01 Aug 11, 2011 7:16 AM (in response to Steve from NY)Steve,
Several additional tips:
- different from Harm's guide (which is centered around quad core, and you have six-core), your Uncore multiplier should be 1.5 times Memory multiplier (not 2x).
If you cooling is decent, good starting figures to try (at your own risk of course!):
1) set memory to use XMP profile
2) Memory multiplier = 8x (assuming you have 1600 MHz ram or faster)
3) CPU clock ratio = 19
4) Disable Turbo mode (cpu mode)
5) QPI ratio = 36
6) BCLK = 190
7) Everything else to "auto"
8) Start and monitor a thermal monitoring "tool" before you run any "applications" and try not to exceed 70 C by much; If you are stable, but too hot, back off on the BCLK figure.
There are lots of www resources for overclocking help; this forum is probably not the best place.
Good luck!
Jim

Steve from NY Aug 11, 2011 7:28 AM (in response to JEShort01)Hi Jim,
Very nice of you to take the time to write back.
Are the values above all that is needed in order to begin the overclocking? Meaning, are there any other values that should be changed in addition to the ones you just outlined?
I do have 24 gigs of 1600 mem
Thanks,
Steve from NY

11. Re: I just built a 6 core 970 @ 3.2, BEGINNER NEEDS OVERCLOCKING ADVISE
JEShort01 Aug 11, 2011 7:36 AM (in response to Steve from NY)No, that's all.
Additional info...
Uncore for Asus may be called UCLK frequency
System memory multiplier (SPD) may be called DRAM frequency
I really like CPUID Hardware Monitor Pro for monitoring various temperatures (CPU, video, etc.)

Harm Millaard Aug 11, 2011 9:23 AM (in response to Steve from NY)Steve,
That is way too high!!!
Your temps should be around 65 C if you have proper cooling at that clock speed. Did you apply the proper cooling paste and did you install a good third party CPU cooler in your system? Anything blocking your airflow inside the case?

15. Re: I just built a 6 core 970 @ 3.2, BEGINNER NEEDS OVERCLOCKING ADVISE
Steve from NY Aug 11, 2011 9:25 AM (in response to Steve from NY)Stock cooler, correct paste was used. I had a problem & the computer reset during rendering. I probably messed up a value. Cooler Master case, lots of fans. Im in the bios, how do i reset the values back to stock?

16. Re: I just built a 6 core 970 @ 3.2, BEGINNER NEEDS OVERCLOCKING ADVISE
Harm Millaard Aug 11, 2011 9:29 AM (in response to Steve from NY)In your BIOS there is an option (somewhere) to reset everything to factory defaults. I suggest you get a good third party CPU cooler, like CoolerMaster, Noctua or Prolimatech but carefully consider its dimesions and your memory sticks. Not all CPU coolers can be installed easily when you have large cooling fins on your memory sticks.

Steve from NY Aug 11, 2011 12:24 PM (in response to Harm Millaard)I couldnt fiquer out how to reset cmos so...Under Tweaking I used an over clocker preset 3.33 mhz & it's running 36-45C no load. It's slowly rising up to 81C with extreme load for 20 minutes (Conversion to mpg2 dvd). Temp in room is 83F. Are these values OK for now until my cooler comes?
I just ordered:

JEShort01 Aug 11, 2011 4:32 PM (in response to Steve from NY)Steve,
Over 70 degrees C. is getting up there; over 90 deg. is definitely TOO HOT!
I'd seen a picture of the cooler you ordered, it looks like a pretty good design. I like the safety factory of two fans as well.
On a different note, you are rendering now - how do you like your new rig!? I hope you like it a lot!

Steve from NY Aug 11, 2011 4:42 PM (in response to JEShort01)Hi Jim,
Love the new system. It should make me some more $$$$.
I must have made a mistake following all the different directions for the overclocking. After i install the aftermarket cooler I will try to find someone I can call on the phone for a few minutes to walk me through it.
Thanks again,

20. Re: I just built a 6 core 970 @ 3.2, BEGINNER NEEDS OVERCLOCKING ADVISE
JEShort01 Aug 11, 2011 4:51 PM (in response to Steve from NY)Steve,
Glad to hear the new PC is working well!
Regarding the OC'ing, it seems you were on the right track, but the settings I gave you (for 3.8GHz) should work fine with a good cooler; and it you were already running much faster, it should be stable. Reaching for 4.2 and beyond requires excellent cooling and a lot of time to do it safely and optimally.
Take GREAT notes with any settings that you make to save time AND to keep from hurting anything.
Regards,
Jim

Islanders66 Aug 11, 2011 7:27 PM (in response to Steve from NY)You will need a good cooler. I suppose mine is working, as I overclocked to 3.8 and temps are below 65C in "quiet" mode for my cooler. (knock on wood!) I couldn't down load Prime95 so ran LinX. My MB must be different, as I couldn't apply some of the advice here, and I researched around and found a few other resources that had a MB and i7 install guide that was close enough to mine.
Good luck!
BTW I"m at 1.2 volts for 3.8. Perhaps I should bump it up but it's working.

JEShort01 Aug 13, 2011 2:19 AM (in response to Steve from NY)Excellent Steve, now you must report back your PPBM5 scores!
I'd be curious also to know what Vcore (CPU voltage) you are selecting, or the mothrboard is auto-selecting, and what your peak CPU core temps are following a sustained (5 minutes) sustained 100% load.

Jim

24. Re: I just built a 6 core 970 @ 3.2, BEGINNER NEEDS OVERCLOCKING ADVISE
Steve from NY Aug 13, 2011 7:40 AM (in response to JEShort01)Hi Jim,
I followed a video tutorial on Youtube that was for my specific m/b, process & mem. If you guys think I should adjust anything, please let me know. The new cooler is MUCH quieter than the old one. It's massive & the ugliest thing I've ever seen:-) But it WORKS!!!
CPU RATIO SET...25
BCLK FREQ...160
PCIM FREQ...100
DRAM FREQ...DDR3-1604MHZ
UCLK FREQ...3207MHZ
QPI LINK DATA...7057MT/S
CPU VOLTAGE...1.35
CPU PLL VOLT...1.80
QPI/DRAM CORE VOLT...1.325
DRAM BUS VOLT...1.65
It is running at 4.0 mhz. I will download the test files when i get a chance. It seems to idle at about 40C with the new cooler & ramp up to 58C when taxed a bit. When we went to put the new cooler on I realized my friend had forgotten to take the thin piece of blue plastic off the original cooler before he put the paste on & assembled it. HOLY CRAP!!! He's a really good guy, it was late & we both missed it. The plastic did not melt or anything. It just came right off. No damage done. If I had not decided to OC the cpu I would have never found this out. It still ran within the safe temps even with the plastic on but went really hot fast when i OC'd it. It's a new machine so it was only running for less than an hour with the original cooler before i realized it.
thanks,
Steve

25. Re: I just built a 6 core 970 @ 3.2, BEGINNER NEEDS OVERCLOCKING ADVISE
JEShort01 Aug 13, 2011 9:43 AM (in response to Steve from NY)Wow, catching the blue plastic film quickly was so lucky.
I limped along for a month with a woosy performing laptop following a technician changing out its motherboard making the same mistake. Finally, when another tech. was changing the motherboard out a second time the plastic was found (by me!).
Regarding your "youtube" settings, they all look OK to be except for the RAM voltage. I've seen many suggest 1.65 v., but if you truly have 1.5 v. RAM (I do), going above 1.5 v. may not be helpful (and even hurtful) for 24GB systems.

Jim

26. Re: I just built a 6 core 970 @ 3.2, BEGINNER NEEDS OVERCLOCKING ADVISE
Islanders66 Aug 13, 2011 3:53 PM (in response to Steve from NY)That's interesting. I clocked mine up to 4.0 gh yet have much different settings.
CPU Ratio 21
BCLK Frequency 190
memory multiplier 8x,
QPI Ratio 36x
uncore 1.5x
CPU Voltage 1.25 (vcore)
QPI DRAM Voltage 1.35
DRam Bus Voltage 1.66
I tweaked a few other things too....
The main difference is your CPU Ratio is higher, BCLK lower, and CPU Voltage (vcore) higher. hmmm
At 100% running IntelBurn that is the most intensive stess test I can find, at maximum level the highest core peak was 66c that was within the first 30 seconds then all of them are about 60c..
The Dram Bus Voltage does concern me, but so far what I've read claimed 1.66 is fine and safe within .5 of QPI Dram Voltage (VTT). I suppose I sould change it back to 1.5 as Jim seems very knowledgable and see how it works.
I tried to go up to 200 on the BCLK applying the same ratios for QPI uncore etc, so that the DRAM Frequency was 1600 but it woudln't even boot up. I increased the vcore up to 1.27 and that dind't help so I gave up, and reverted back to 4.0.

28. Re: I just built a 6 core 970 @ 3.2, BEGINNER NEEDS OVERCLOCKING ADVISE
Islanders66 Aug 13, 2011 5:21 PM (in response to Steve from NY)I ran the stress test again and at some point my computer did shut down when I wasn't watching it. I'm thinking I may need a fan for the RAM?
Jim also suggested CPU Ratio Setting at 19 and mine is at 21. I'll try the stress test again and watch the temps more closely. Any suggestions?
The Windows shut down report did mention the problem was at C:user temp/ so I'm assuming something got too hot even though the temps in Core Temp were around 60c when I was watcing things.
I did have the DRAM Bus Voltage back to 1.5.

29. Re: I just built a 6 core 970 @ 3.2, BEGINNER NEEDS OVERCLOCKING ADVISE
Islanders66 Aug 14, 2011 5:45 AM (in response to Islanders66)A minor update for anyone concerned. The memory tested out fine. I downloaded Prime95 and that has ran fine overnight. I'm assuming testing the RAM at 95% with the stress test may have overheated the RAM? Although it could have been something else.
The peak temp in Prime95 was 70c although the cooler can be fine tuned as the liquid only reaches 45c so .2 degrees and a slight increase in fan RPM should bring that down even while in quiet mode.
Edit.. yes a slight fan adjustment brings down the core temps in Prime to 40-50c, and the liquid temp down to 42c or so and the fans are still quit. Maybe this will help althogh I've got some more reseach to do on the RAM that appears to be beyond the scope of the "beginner guides" for overclocking that appear leave out some critical info for basic testing. Lots of warnings about not overheating the cores but not too clear about the RAM.

Steve from NY Aug 15, 2011 8:56 AM (in response to Islanders66)OC UPDATE:
I was editing in ppcs5.5 for the first time since i OC'd it, 30 minutes into it the computer gave out a continuous whine & locked up.SCAREY!! I hit the reset button & went into the bios & knocked the ram voltage from 1.65 back to stock 1.5 & its been fine for 3 hours now. Cant say for sure but I believe this was probably it. My core temps were below 50C. I wasn't doing anything taxing to the cpu at all.
