Is there a problem with Windows 7 and Contribute?

    charlenee Community Member

I have quite a few clients using Contribute to update web pages. Recently 2 of them upgraded to Windows 7 and they have been blowing apart the layouts. both of them were doing just fine, or at least fairly well before the upgrade. Is there a problem that anyone knows about? One is on CS3 and one on CS5. The one on 5 is having more problems and really messing up the layout so that part of nav ends up underneath another element.

I went over and watched one of them work (the one on CS3) and made a couple of suggestions that seemed to help.

      1. Size photos first before inserting them rather than after, i.e. don't resize in Contribute.

      2. Don't paste directly from MS Word - seems to bring in a lot of extra code. They are changing over to typing in directly or changing to MS Word copy to "text only".

I am just hoping someone else has experienced this so I can get some insight.

          Charlenee,

I don't know if this will help, but I'll share just in case.  You may have one than one problem.  I've had problems when clients upgrade to CS5 if the site was configured to use wordprocessor style editing (so that it adds inline styles to zero out the margins) because Contribute would do this to the whole page, including the theoretically untouchable areas.  So I've made them learn how to use <shift enter>.   As far as pasting from Word goes, that has always been a problem for me.   I'm having a brand new issue (a couple million blank lines introduced to the head section of the source code) which is different than yours, and it's going to be interesting to see if the client has recently upgraded to Win 7.  If so, I'll post here as well as on the thread that is actually discussing the problem.

          best, Diane

            Diane,

            Could you clarify <shift enter>?

I do all my programming in code and on a Mac - my clients use Contribute on Windows so I am a bit unfamiliar with how they work.

When a site is configured for "dreamweaver style editing" in Contribute a CR (Carriage Return) or hitting Enter gives you paragraph spacing...  so two lines down the page.  To get a single line when in this editing style you must enter a non-breaking paragraph keystroke, or SHIFT-ENTER (also known as a line break).

To help with your copy & paste issue using (any) Microsoft product, namely Word, I we teach our users to copy & paste text to their Notepad first, then copy & paste it into their Contribute workspace.

              Hope that helps.

That's one way. Another would be to use Cntrl+Shift+V or Edit>Paste text only in Contribute.
