Hi Jeffrey.
Just a heads-up on this one (although you probably already know this).
BD files on standard DVD uses AVCHD encoding, which is an optional format.
Unless these are for personal use, it's not a great idea as a format as there are so many players that just do not read these discs......

i did not know this...
the disc seems to have a bluray file/folder structure
and they will not play in a dvd player so i thought
i got everything correct...
can you point me to any links/info about
the specifics regarding your comments...
i have an oppo bluray player
i guess i need to get a disc to my friend
to check it on his ps3...
the whole idea behind this is to not have to use expensive
bluray discs for files that are usually not bigger than 2gb...
i always am interested in new information
thanks again,

h2ofun Sep 6, 2011 6:04 PM (in response to tfi productions 44)I have the same question. I make my BR discs from Encore but always make ISO files out of them. VLC will not play them or any other sw program that I can find on my PC. I have to send to my popcornhour setup box to view them. So, if someone can use a sw package on the PC to play a BR ISO, let me know since I have yet to get anything to work.

Neil Wilkes Sep 7, 2011 12:21 AM (in response to tfi productions 44)Hi Jeffrey.
I understand why you are doing it this way. Makes sense. I simply wanted to be sure that you knew it's not that widely supported, and certainly not all BluRay players will read these discs. It's an optional form, as it's really a fudge putting BD structure on a DVD.
It dates back to early HD camcorders that used DVD as the storage media.
I really, really hate having to do this, but until Jim Taylor gets BluRay demystified online, I have no choice.

As always, with Wiki make certain you double check any information given as it is far from reliable.

8. Re: are there any decent FREE blu-ray software players for a win764bit pc please?
h2ofun Sep 7, 2011 4:38 AM (in response to Jeff Bellune)Jeff, no, I have not tried to mount. When I use something like VLC on a ISO DVD, no mounting required, it just plays.
Now I hear windows 8 will have native support for ISO files, which might finally put this issue to bed.

tfi productions 44 Oct 30, 2011 4:35 AM (in response to tfi productions 44)hello,
i am still looking for a pc win 7 program that will allow me
to check the quality of a Blu ray video stream exported from PPRO cs5.0 only
without having to load it into Encore first.
i think Encore prefers unmuxed audio and video files,
but all of the pc media players (wmp, vlc, zoom player, etc.)
need Blu ray files that are muxed...
any help is appreciated...

Ann Bens Oct 30, 2011 5:54 AM (in response to tfi productions 44)If its a m2t file any player will play it.
If its a m4v file change the .m4v extention to .mts, power dvd will play this.

tfi productions 44 Oct 30, 2011 6:36 AM (in response to Ann Bens)hello Ann,
thanks for the info
i 'right clicked' on the .m4v file and renamed it to
.mts
but when i 'right click' and look at the 'properties' info
the file's name is now: emilyshelby.mts.m4v
can you explain how / where i change the real file extension
thanks again,

Ann Bens Oct 30, 2011 7:39 AM (in response to tfi productions 44)Ah this is going to be a bit tricky. My windows is Dutch and i do not know the exact translations.
When you open a window go to Extra. At the bottom of this pull down menu there will be something like an option for folders.
Next go to tab View and uncheck Extentions for known file types.
Now you are able to see the extention and change it.

tfi productions 44 Oct 30, 2011 8:41 AM (in response to Ann Bens)hello Ann,
i was able to change the file extensions to .mts
and the files open into power dvd
however, if i open powerdvd first
it will inform me that powerdvd does not support this resolution
and will now close...(any info on this?)
but, if i right click on the renamed file
it will open into powerdvd and play okay...
secondly, i have 2 bluray files that i've renamed...
both files open in powerdvd correctly
however, the smaller file 8gb seems to load properly
and the player displays the correct time and i can scroll through it
with the little white button on the powerdvd current posistion bar,
however, the bigger file 18gb will not show me the correct / or any 'time'
and the white current time cursor doesn't even appear
and if you try to click anywhere else on the 'timeline'
power dvd will just start the long clip from the beginning..
also, the playback displays pixelation in random places
that is not apparent in the final render 1pass bluray file
that encore uses to make the unmuxed video track...
i don't know it the computer needs to load all 18gb
before i can correctly 'scrub' through the movie...
and once loaded this random pixelation will cease...
again, thank you so much for your help
my late step-grandmother lived in Potsdam
and i played a pickup soccer game
next to parts of the berlin wall in 1997 in berlin...

14. Re: are there any decent FREE blu-ray software players for a win764bit pc please?
h2ofun Oct 30, 2011 8:49 AM (in response to tfi productions 44)Yes, I know I can play the streams, but this is not what I need. I need the ability to play the final BR .iso project. I am forced today to upload the file to my popcornhour set top box to see if my completed .iso BR will play correctly.
Now, I have been told I can mount the .iso on my computer, and then use something like powerDVD to play. Just have not had the time to try yet. I hear Windows 8 will have built in .iso format playing. Hope this is true for
lots of formats.

Ann Bens Oct 30, 2011 8:56 AM (in response to h2ofun)Download Virtual Clone Drive, its free, like Jeff already said and play the iso with Power DVD.
That is how i view my iso's.

thank you a bazillion for your repeated help
all is well and crisp and clear and smooth
mounted a virtual drive with virtual drive clone
and then opened up a 27gb bluray iso with power dvd 8.0
and saw the entire bluray disc (buttons, navigation, etc.)
i am happy
have a great day...

tfi productions 44 Oct 31, 2011 9:34 AM (in response to Ann Bens)hello Ann,
interesting thing:
the transitions (dissovles) between the clips are choppy / blocky...
with the 23gb 1920x1080 interlaced ntsc bluray 1 pass 29.97 fps project
however
the transitions are good with an 8gb slide show @ 1920x1080 interlaced ntsc bluray 1 pass 29.97 fps project
that were made from a large group of still images
i have an nvidia quadro 4000 gpu with MPE turned on and i also checked maximum render quality
when exporting the PPRO sequence in AME cs5.03 pc win7 64 bit i930 @2.8ghz 24gb ram
any help is appreciated...
i hope i am missing something simple...

JSS1138 Oct 31, 2011 11:07 AM (in response to tfi productions 44)To my surprise my standard players won't handle a Blu-ray disk, nor even a Blu-ray compliant .m4v file.
But this will, and it's free.

21. Re: are there any decent FREE blu-ray software players for a win764bit pc please?
tfi productions 44 Oct 31, 2011 4:06 PM (in response to JSS1138)hello Jim,
installed daplayer but loaded up an unmuxed bluray file 29.97 interlaced
exported out of PPRO through AME cs5.03
and it plays in fast motion
also it seems that there is no ability to 'scrub' / 'skip' through
footage, you have the watch the entire 2hours and 30 minutes
even if you want to spot check somewhere in the middle...
i'm inclined to try Ann's suggestion below about a 2pass vbr
(but i have not had any success with 2pass Bluray
and every one of my 1 pass encode has been successful
however, i get pixelizing and 'corrupt' transitions / dissolves' between clips)
any advice / comments suggestions?
thanks,
jeffrey

22. Re: are there any decent FREE blu-ray software players for a win764bit pc please?
tfi productions 44 Oct 31, 2011 4:17 PM (in response to Ann Bens)hello Ann,
i hope you can shed some light on this
i've tried 2pass VBR exports for bluray but they crash
with various errors
i am involved in the thread that is trying to get this 1pass/2pass
high vs main thing figured out
would you mind sharing your bluray encode settings
for 2pass vbr
i export using AME and then load up the unmuxed files
into Encore (which i hope says 'don't transcode)
i don't mind the time of a 2pass if the quality is there
like fixing the 'cruddy transitions' and any pixelizing
during the movie...
thank you for your continured help...
