When done
Rezip the file
Rename the extension to .epub

Techi Panda Sep 13, 2011 4:43 AM (in response to matthew stuart)Hi matthew
There is lot of free epub editors in the market for example
http://code.google.com/p/sigil/
Sigil is a multi-platform WYSIWYG ebook editor.
also you can manually do this by following these steps
1. rename the epub file to filename.zip
2. unzip the files (you can view the files and edit)
3. again create zip file from the folder
4. rename the zip file to filename.epub
Thanks

3. Re: How do I edit an epub
BobLevine Sep 13, 2011 5:11 AM (in response to Eugene Tyson)Won't work on a Mac Eugene. Works great on Windows 7 but it does have issues on Windows XP. Never tested on Vista but I suspect it will work the same as Win 7.

4. Re: How do I edit an epub
matthew stuart Sep 13, 2011 5:16 AM (in response to Techi Panda)I did that, but when I double click to unzip the file I get a new file appear called 'filename.zip.cpgz'
If I double click the new file, then I just get a duplicate of the original file!
Any thoughts?
Thanks.

ZebDes Sep 13, 2011 5:31 AM (in response to matthew stuart)I take it you are on a mac. If so you can use these scripts to zip and unzip the epub: http://indesignsecrets.com/unzip-and-zip-epub-files-safely-with-these-applescripts.php
If on a PC, follow the steps as explained above - they work fine on XP and Windows 7 but not sure about Vista.

7. Re: How do I edit an epub
Eugene Tyson Sep 13, 2011 5:42 AM (in response to Eugene Tyson)Well if they have access to a windows machine they could unzip it that way and transfer it back... no?

BobLevine Sep 13, 2011 5:57 AM (in response to Eugene Tyson)Perhaps, but not necessarily.
I would need to test that out.

9. Re: How do I edit an epub
BobLevine Sep 13, 2011 5:58 AM (in response to ZebDes)I've had issues doing this on XP and trying to validate the epub. Perhaps it works with third party tools but native XP Zip files, renamed to epub do not validate for me.

In addtion to the applescript solution mentioned, you can also just use the "zip" and "unzip" command in Terminal.app.
I'm puzzled how you can have issues on Win XP, but I suppose I don't know the specifics of the problem. Would be mildly curious to see an example.

11. Re: How do I edit an epub
BobLevine Sep 13, 2011 3:58 PM (in response to John Hawkinson)Kept getting errors on the mimetype file when I tried to validate it. Didn't really pursue since I don't really use XP.

12. Re: How do I edit an epub
haarlemtypo Sep 13, 2011 4:43 PM (in response to BobLevine)on a windows pc, if you rename the .epub to .zip and then right click "open in windows explorer", you can copy out the files you want to edit, edit them outside the .zip directory, copy them back after editing and rename the folder to .epub,
this way, the mime-file remains unchanged

Jredally Jan 27, 2014 12:54 AM (in response to Eugene Tyson)Did you use Dreamweaver to edit your ePub file? Oh, this is my first time I heard that! You can use some professional program to edit your ePub, as for me, I used iStonsoft ePub editor tool to design my ePub file, it can add cover, edit html, xhtml, metadata, titile and more...

14. Re: How do I edit an epub
Willi Adelberger Jan 27, 2014 1:42 AM (in response to matthew stuart)On the Mac you can use BBedit (from barbone) to edit ePubs without unzipping them. It has all features of an text and html and xml editor.
Otherwise you can use any html editor like Dreamweaver, but in most cases you will have to unzip them BUT zipping on the mac won't work because a specific algorithm is needed to zip, but Mac OS supports a different zip flair than windows does. But there are some zip-programes on the market which will zip files so that they are able to be used in epub readers.
