Jay Gladwell Sep 13, 2011 3:59 PM (in response to Harm Millaard)Harm, you're very bright guy. Unfortunately, I am not. By that I mean I do not have the understanding of computers you do. My computer is like my car. I know how to drive it, but I am incapable of working on it to fix any problems.
So let me toss this into the mix...
I went back to a previous version of the project (I save major changes as sequential versions in case of a major meltdown). When I tried to render the timeline, which does contain FX and motion on text, the computer did not shut down and the render was completed without any issues!
Could the one project file have a problem in it alone that was causing the computer to shut down?
Thanks, Harm, for your help. I will find someone locally that can apply your advice.

Harm Millaard Sep 13, 2011 11:35 PM (in response to Jay Gladwell)Jay,
Start by running CPU-Z and then under the About tab save the results in HTML format. Next download and run http://www.piriform.com/speccy/download
When it has gathered your system information, select File/Save as XML. Attach both files to your reply. Then also post a screenshot from Speedfan.
While we are gathering info about your system, download http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653 and then run the program. Attach a screenshot of the resulting list as well. All these steps will enable me to have a look at your system in a few easy steps from your side.

ParkerPSU Sep 19, 2011 1:08 PM (in response to Harm Millaard)I'm having a similar problem. for me it is happening at a specific point on the timeline. My computer has successfully rendered out long timelines in the past so I don't think the problem is hardware based. my cpu and gpu temps are all well within specs.

Harm Millaard Sep 21, 2011 2:21 AM (in response to Jay Gladwell)Jay,
I sent you a mail with my initial observations. At this moment my main worry is your memory. You have DIMM slots on your mobo, marked A1, A2 and B1, B2. Make sure that your Crucial sticks are in A1 and A2 and your Samsung sticks in B1 and B2 or the other way around, so long as the same brand sticks are in A and the same brand sticks in B. Once you have reseated your memory sticks, download and run Memtest86+ to check that the memory is OK.
Once you have done that, download HWMonitor, run it and post a screenshot here. Keep the program open and download Prime95 from here: http://majorgeeks.com/Prime95_d4363.html. Start Prime95 and let it run the torture test. While it is running this test, HWMonitor will show the temperatures of your cores. What do they become after 15 minutes and after 30 minutes and after an hour?

8. Re: Rendering or Exporting Knocks Out Computer...?
Jay Gladwell Sep 21, 2011 3:41 AM (in response to Harm Millaard)This is really weird. When I moved to Windows 7 this time last year, I bought 16 GB of Crucial memory—four 4 GB sticks—one stick in each slot. Can it be any other way? I used to have Samsung when when Windows XP, but those are in a drawer!
Under these circumstances, how should I proceed?

9. Re: Rendering or Exporting Knocks Out Computer...?
Harm Millaard Sep 21, 2011 5:00 AM (in response to Jay Gladwell)CPU-Z reports that slot 1 is occupied with a Samsung stick, slots 2 and 3 by Crucial sticks and slot 4 with the other Samsung stick. I would exchange the sticks in slot 2 and slot 4 and then run Memtest86+ from the CD you have burned and boot from. I expect that the four sticks were purchased as two dual packs. If you want, you can export the CPU-Z results again, like you did earlier and check whether CPU-Z now recognizes the Samsung designated sticks in slots 1 and 2 and the Crucial sticks in slots 3 and 4.
