Colin Brougham Sep 20, 2011 9:10 AM (in response to Cocovanna)Here are the details that the "tutorial" leaves out:
- Click the Keyframe button in the track header and change it to Show Track Keyframes.
- Click the track effect dropdown and change it to Panner:Balance.
- Using the Pen tool or the Move tool with the Ctrl/Cmd key, add keyframes to the yellow rubberband.
- Drag the keyframes up to pan to the left channel and down to pan to the right channel. You'll see tooltip popups as you drag showing you the pan value.

You saw the "sneak peak" of the tutorial. The full version is there for the members of VidMuze and anyone else who would like to signup.

5. Re: How to pan audio – precisely?
Colin Brougham Sep 20, 2011 9:26 AM (in response to VidMuze)Understood, but this is a user-to-user forum, where there is a reasonable expectation to receive such information for no charge if someone feels like supplying it. I don't doubt that the information I posted was included in your paid-for tutorial, and I respect your right to try to make a buck, but posting such things here is generally considered bad juju. In fact, it might be in violation of forum guidelines, but I'll let the moderators decide that.
Sorry to be a killjoy, but I'm here to help other users like me.

8. Re: How to pan audio – precisely?
Bill Hunt Sep 20, 2011 10:18 AM (in response to VidMuze)VidMuze,
This is a "slippery slope," and things can get pretty gray.
As an example, the MOD on the Adobe Premiere Elements Forum is part of a multi-tier Web site, Muvipix. It's multi-tier, in that it is open to post and read (their Community Forums) to anyone. If one takes advantage of the free "sign-up," then there are many articles, etc., that become available, and more material that is available for a price to download. Then, there is a full subscription, where everything is available for no additional charge. When he, or I, link to Muvipix, we try to explain the multi-tier aspect, and define what is available for free, just so that there are no surprises. As Muvipix is in partnership with Adobe, some potential issues are probably skirted, but still, no one wants to give the impression that EVERYTHING there is for free. Sometimes a tough call.
Also, that MOD is an author of books on several Adobe programs (plus a few non-Adobe programs), so linking to his books is a bit of a touchy subject. Still, individually, he's an Adobe Partner, so some of the legal stuff is covered in contracts' fine-print.
Good luck,
Hunt

VidMuze Sep 20, 2011 10:41 AM (in response to Bill Hunt)Thanks for your info Hunt! I've just contacted Adobe about this very thing. Anxious to hear what they say.
In the mean time, here is the "full" version of the tutorial.

10. Re: How to pan audio – precisely?
Cocovanna Sep 20, 2011 11:40 AM (in response to Colin Brougham)I know how to make the panning with the mouse. But I would like to be able to ENTER the value instead, I haven't found a way to do this with panning. It's tedious to try to hit the value with sufficient precision, especially when having to do it a couple of times.

11. Re: How to pan audio – precisely?
Bill Hunt Sep 20, 2011 12:07 PM (in response to Cocovanna)One workflow that might, or might not, provide the precision for you, would be to go to Edit>Preferences, and adjust the frequency of Audio Track Keyframes. I would adjust that frequency up, so you will have fewer Track Keyframes to deal with. Then, with the Audio Mixer Open, use the Balance control to add Track Keyframes. In the Effects Control Panel, you can Delete any intermediate Track Keyframes, that have been added, and enter the precise dB levels, for those remaining.
A variation of that method would be to use Colin's method, and then adjust each added Clip Keyframe, with the input box, that will allow for precise control.
Personally, though I use the Clip Keyframe method less often (relying on the Audio Mixer), for what you want, I think that the precision and fewer Keyframes to have to deal with, would be the best route.
Good luck,
Hunt

Todd_Kopriva Sep 20, 2011 2:54 PM (in response to Bill Hunt)Regarding pointing to commercial materials:
If you are pointing to a free excerpt that includes useful information that answers the question, no problem.
But, if you are pointing to something that requires someone to pay to get the answer, then the link will be removed, you will be warned, and further instances of that behavior may result in your access to this site being constrained or removed.

15. Re: How to pan audio – precisely?
Jon-M-Spear Sep 21, 2011 12:03 AM (in response to JSS1138)Cocovanna, use the audio mixer to enter Balance numeric values via keyboard. Don't do it from the timeline.

16. Re: How to pan audio – precisely?
Cocovanna Sep 21, 2011 6:36 AM (in response to Jon-M-Spear)That's what I am trying (read my post), but it won't work after the first keyframe has been created (the value changes, but nothing happens and it is ignored)

17. Re: How to pan audio – precisely?
Colin Brougham Sep 21, 2011 6:40 AM (in response to Cocovanna)What you want to do is not possible. There are various other methods--I think all of them have been covered now--but not what you want. Make a feature request: Adobe Feature Request/Bug Report Form
In the meantime, use any of the above.
