Harm Millaard Sep 20, 2011 11:08 PM (in response to rowby)Rowby,
You have me confused a bit. The topic says: 1880 Low profile card versus 1680, both 12 ports but nowhere in your message do you mention the 1680, only the 1880.
The 1880 range supports SATA3, the 1680 only SATA2.
The low profile models have no upgradable memory and come with 512 MB, the full size models do and come standard with 1 GB. See http://www.areca.com.tw/products/1880.htm
With the cost of DDR2-800 ECC memory around € 25 for a 2 GB stick, it is well worth the investment. The 4 GB sticks are around € 100 and that is too much to justify over a 2 GB stick IMO. I would not consider a low profile model because of the fixed cache of 512 MB only. If you want to improve performance, I would look in order of priority at:
1. Increase memory to 24 GB.
2. Increase cache memory on the controller to 2 GB.
3. Add one or more F3's to the raid.
Hope this answers your question.

rowby Sep 21, 2011 5:30 AM (in response to Harm Millaard)Ooops!
I made a mistake in my original posting.
I said "I was having problems with my Areca ARC-1880ixl-12...."
It should have said...
"I was having problems with my Areca ARC-1680ix-12/16/24...."
Thanks, Harm, for your suggestions. I need to get out my ruler and make sure I have room for a full size model.
Currently there is an emply (open slot) beneath my current Areca board on my ASUS P6X58D Premium LGA 1366 board. So I assume it will fit, but need to double check.

I am looking at this one:
http://tekram.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=148
I see, at least on the tekram site, that they have an option for Cache Memory Upgrade: for either "1GB standard" or "4GB"
I don't see an option for 2GB. I guess I could get 2GB elsewhere? Not sure of the specs for such a 2GB card....
Regarding SATA3....
Can I assume my current ASUS P6X58D Premium LGA 1366 and my current hard drives (SAMSUNG Model HD103SJ (1000GB 7200 rpm 32M) support Sata 3?
Thanks,

4. Re: Advantages of Areca ARC-1880ixl-12 over Areca ARC-1680ix-12/16/24
Harm Millaard Sep 21, 2011 7:18 AM (in response to rowby)The memory upgrades are simple DDR2-800 ECC memory sticks that are widely available. I can understand that Tekram would not offer 2 GB sticks, because with their pricing on the 4 GB, their margin and profit is much bigger. Looking up the price this morning locally in the Netherlands I found 33 on-line shops that have the 2 GB sticks. So you must be able to find them easily. The specs for the memory are on the Areca site.
If you have a video card in your system, then the full height Areca will fit too, because it has the same standard height as a video card. No need to get the ruler out. the 1880 has the same height as the 1680.

Rowby Goren Sep 21, 2011 7:51 AM (in response to Harm Millaard)Sounds good.
Right now I have 4 - 5GB hard drives. Based on the y Areca ARC-1880ixl-12 card how many hard drives should I add to the raid in order to see a nice increase in performance.
Also will I have to totally rebuild my current raid -- recopying all of my video (etc) files -- or can I just add the cards and issue some command with the Areca software to recognize the additional hard drives. I assume I can do that. Just want to be sure.

Harm Millaard Sep 21, 2011 8:03 AM (in response to Rowby Goren)When adding a disk, all you need to do is expand the array. No need to copy all your existing files to another location first.
Every disk added to the array will increase the transfer rates by approximately 85 MB/s.

rowby Sep 21, 2011 9:27 AM (in response to Harm Millaard)Thanks
And I assume when I swap out the "old" Areca ARC-1680ix-12/16/24 for the Areca ARC-1880ixl-12 (which I am 99 percent sure I will order within the next day or so) it will "automatically" go from sata2 to sata3?
In other words, the Areca ARC-1880ixl-12 will do whatever is necessary to do the switch -- or will I have to make some settings in Windows 7 to treat the raid as a SATA3?

Harm Millaard Sep 21, 2011 9:39 AM (in response to rowby)I have never exchanged/upgraded the controller on an existing array, but I would think that should be OK, but for safety I would send an e-mail to Areca what their opinion is. Keep in mind that while the 1880 series supports SATA3, your disks are still SATA2, so in essence nothing will change. For the future it can make a difference for new arrays with SATA3 disks.

rowby Sep 21, 2011 11:17 AM (in response to Harm Millaard)Then (before I start my new project), I'll go ahead and get Sata3 hard drives.
I"m checking amazon.com -- but if you, Harm, or anyone has some recommendations, feel free to join in this discussion! (I guess I should also search this form for SATA3 harddrives recommendations.
I assume I would be getting, like I have now, 500gb hard drives (I currently have a set of 4 in my raid). But I would like to "upgrade" that to at least 6 hard drives.

Harm Millaard Sep 21, 2011 11:52 AM (in response to rowby)Unless you want to use your current drives for other purposes, you better expand the array using the same brand and model as you currently have. Do not mix different brand/models and sizes in the same array.

rowby Sep 21, 2011 12:41 PM (in response to Harm Millaard)Hmmmm...
Maybe I am confused, but you said "Keep in mind that while the 1880 series supports SATA3, your disks are still SATA2"
I'm not in front of my video editing computer, but according to my notes, my current hard drives are SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ. Are you sure they are SATA2?
According to the below link, they are Sata3???
I see that the above link is for a 1TB version of the drive, and I think my version is 500GB -- again not in front of my video editing computer, but I am pretty sure they are 500GB. -- So could the 500GB version be Sata2?
Heee heee and confused.Rowby

rowby Sep 21, 2011 1:49 PM (in response to Harm Millaard)AH -- I see.
Then I will replace all of my drives with Sata3 (Except my operating system drive).
Should I go with 500GB drives or 1TB drives.
And any brands that you or anyone else recommends?

Rowby Goren Sep 22, 2011 7:29 AM (in response to Harm Millaard)Hi Harm,
This answers my main question, but I don't see anyplace on my screen to give it "Correct Answer". I thought I saw that capability yesterday, but not today.I am going to start a new thread on Sata 3 hard drive recommendations.
