1. Re: How to erase a light stand from multiple exposures (same frame)?
Noel Carboni Sep 18, 2011 7:18 AM (in response to deedeecz)Here's one thought as to how to approach this...
- Put all your images in a single document as multiple layers.
- Create a new transparent layer over the top of the whole set.
- Use Content Aware Fill to create pixels on the new top layer that effectively hide the stand.
- Make each layer below successively visible (e.g., by hiding layers above), then save your work products (e.g., JPEG or TIFF or whatever) from the result.

2. Re: How to erase a light stand from multiple exposures (same frame)?
deedeecz Sep 18, 2011 8:14 AM (in response to Noel Carboni)Thanks. I'm stuck on step 3 - Content Aware is greyed out in the fill dialog box.

3. Re: How to erase a light stand from multiple exposures (same frame)?
Noel Carboni Sep 18, 2011 8:26 AM (in response to deedeecz)I was thinking you could paint over the stand with the Spot Healing Brush set to Content Aware Fill. Make sure the [ ] Sample All Layers box is checked.

4. Re: How to erase a light stand from multiple exposures (same frame)?
deedeecz Sep 18, 2011 8:45 AM (in response to Noel Carboni)I've just tried it, but it seems that the Spot Healing Brush set to Content Aware Fill (Sample All Layers box is checked) doesn't cope with a rich background and creates a mess. (unless I'm doing sth. wrong). Cloning has worked for me well in the past but I don't know how to apply cloning to multiple images(layers) at once (or to copy paste the cloned area to the rest of images(layers)). Any suggestions?

5. Re: How to erase a light stand from multiple exposures (same frame)?
Noel Carboni Sep 18, 2011 8:53 AM (in response to deedeecz)Well, there are ways using masking to get Content Aware Fill to choose from a subset of the image.
This video gives some guidance on that...

6. Re: How to erase a light stand from multiple exposures (same frame)?
deedeecz Sep 18, 2011 11:23 AM (in response to Noel Carboni)Thanks, I checked out that video but I think I'd be more comfortable using the clone stamp tool. If only there was a way to sample from my reference background image and than apply cloning to ALL layers with a single stroke(clone to all layers simultaneously) - is that possible?

7. Re: How to erase a light stand from multiple exposures (same frame)?
Noel Carboni Sep 18, 2011 11:56 AM (in response to deedeecz)Well, the technique I described can apply still - Clone from what's visible to the transparent top layer, then use the top layer over the top of all your images as you save them. This assumes the light is consistent between them of course.

8. Re: How to erase a light stand from multiple exposures (same frame)?
deedeecz Sep 18, 2011 12:23 PM (in response to Noel Carboni)Thank you. Yes, the light is consistent. I cloned from the background layer (the shot without the stand) onto the new layer. The new layer is on the top. Then, I go to File>Scripts>Export layers to file. The resulting jpgs still have the stand in them :/

9. Re: How to erase a light stand from multiple exposures (same frame)?
Noel Carboni Sep 18, 2011 12:45 PM (in response to deedeecz)I imagine you'd have to make each layer visible in turn (e.g., by hiding intervening layers above it) and do File - Save As, so that what's saved is what you see.

11. Re: How to erase a light stand from multiple exposures (same frame)?
Donald Reese Sep 19, 2011 7:03 AM (in response to deedeecz)Maybe I am not reading the question correctly here, but if you have 2 identical tripod mounted shots, and only have your problem item showing in the one, why not just drag the clean shot over the problem one and paint your item right out with one stroke? sounds like you are making things harder than they need to be. We do this all the time and actually can place lights in the frame these days as long as you remember to shoot frames with the item moved from that area.

12. Re: How to erase a light stand from multiple exposures (same frame)?
deedeecz Sep 19, 2011 10:04 AM (in response to Donald Reese)Thanks Donald. How do I drag? Are we talking about dragging one layer onto another or two separate photos? How do I paint the item out? I have more than just 2 shots - 1 is clean and the stand shows in the rest. Can I use this technique for multiple images/layers simultaneously?
Sorry, for the newbie questions but I am a PS newbie

13. Re: How to erase a light stand from multiple exposures (same frame)?
Donald Reese Sep 19, 2011 4:07 PM (in response to deedeecz)Yes i was talking about dragging pic 1 onto pic 2 and then just brushing the data in that you want. I would start with the image without the stand in it,then drag the image with the stand on top of that one and then hit the layer mask icon. then simply brush across the area were the light stand is visible and the data from the lower image will simply replace the light stand.

14. Re: How to erase a light stand from multiple exposures (same frame)?
deedeecz Sep 21, 2011 1:58 PM (in response to Donald Reese)Which brush?

15. Re: How to erase a light stand from multiple exposures (same frame)?
Donald Reese Sep 22, 2011 5:47 AM (in response to deedeecz)Any soft edged brush. just hit the b-key. here is a simple example i did for you. I shot this farm scene on a tripod, first with no amish in it,then when they came by. imagine the amish were your light stand. use photo 1 to start and then drag photo 2 with the amish on top. next hit the layer mask icon, and brush the area were the amish are, and you will see the data from the first clean shot replace the data you did not want. hope that clarifies things for you.

16. Re: How to erase a light stand from multiple exposures (same frame)?
deedeecz Sep 22, 2011 9:51 AM (in response to Donald Reese)Hey. It's not working for me :/
I successfully drag one pic onto another using the move tool. (The one with the stand is on the top, perfectly aligned). This creates a layer (Layer 1). Then, on Layer 1 I create a layer mask. Next, I press B and paint over the stand but instead of dissappearing it just paints black over it???

17. Re: How to erase a light stand from multiple exposures (same frame)?
Donald Reese Sep 22, 2011 10:39 AM (in response to deedeecz)Click on the mask itself after you add the layer mask. you are painting on the image on the left of the mask,so just go to the layers palette, click once on the mask there, and you will be good to go.

18. Re: How to erase a light stand from multiple exposures (same frame)?
deedeecz Sep 22, 2011 5:58 PM (in response to Donald Reese)OK, I clicked on the mask and used the brush on the image - nothing happens, not even black paint! Nothing new shows, nothing disappears.

19. Re: How to erase a light stand from multiple exposures (same frame)?
Donald Reese Sep 22, 2011 6:18 PM (in response to deedeecz)Hit the x-key. that will switch your brush from white to black. one hides, one reveals. I assume you have white as your foreground color right now

20. Re: How to erase a light stand from multiple exposures (same frame)?
deedeecz Sep 23, 2011 12:08 AM (in response to Donald Reese)Thank you Donald - it works now! Noel's method works for multiple images simultaneously - can I erase the stand from multiple images in one shot in the method presented by you?
