1. Re: Swapping out 12 GB memory for 24 GB memory - Brand and suggestions
Mike-Baldwin Sep 23, 2011 7:36 PM (in response to rowby)Rowby,
I just built up my own ASUS P6X58-E a couple of weeks ago and would recommend you look at Corsair Vengeance Low Profile RAM. I'm surprised that I don't hear it mentioned more often on this forum due to the exact reasons you mention (clearance issues with the CPU cooler), although it has only been out for a few months. I have a Noctua NH-U12P SE2 cooler (push/pull pointed upwards) and have no issues with clearance whatsoever. All of the RAM was recognized without me having to do anything special in BIOS and I ran MemTest+ overnight without any errors so even though it wasn't specifically on the preferred vendor list it sure seems to work great.
I bought three of these

Hope that helps,

Harm Millaard Sep 23, 2011 11:57 PM (in response to rowby)I have the exact same cooler/memory as Mike and there it works great, no need to remove the cooling fin from the first stick, but in your case with the D14 I'm not sure. The Vengeance is pretty high. Whatever brand/model you get, do buy only tri-packs.

rowby Sep 24, 2011 8:08 AM (in response to Harm Millaard)Thanks Harm and Mike.
I was ready to buy the Corsair Vengeance Low Profile memory...
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00569K7LM
...in fact I put it in my shopping cart -- just now at Amazon -- and then I remembered Harm's advice to buy a tri-pak. So I cancelled my order and am looking elsewhere or will wait awhile until Amazon has tri-paks available.

Rowby Goren Sep 25, 2011 7:31 AM (in response to Harm Millaard)Hi Harm,
Can you tell me where you were able to find your Corsair Vengeance Low Profile in a tri-pak?
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00569K7LM
The above item claims that it is a "kit".
I assume, however, buying three of them would not guarantee me a "Tri-pak"?
I am having problems finding it via google search as a tri-pak.

Harm Millaard Sep 25, 2011 7:44 AM (in response to Rowby Goren)Here is an overview of hexa-packs, even better than two tri-packs, available over here: http://tweakers.net/pricewatch/287759/corsair-vengeance-cmz24gx3m6a1600c9.html

6. Re: Swapping out 12 GB memory for 24 GB memory - Brand and suggestions
Rowby Goren Sep 25, 2011 8:55 AM (in response to Harm Millaard)Hi Harm,
Is this link the same memory that you just sent me the link to http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Vengeance-PC3-12800-1600mhz-CMZ24GX3M6A1600C9/dp/tech-data/B 004UPTEH6/ref=de_a_smtd
If it is the same memory then I'll buy it right away (only one left in amazon stock)

I noticed that it is "triple channel". The other memory was "double channel". I assume I can use that with my below specs??
Intel i7-980X ASUS P6X58D Premium LGA 1366

7. Re: Swapping out 12 GB memory for 24 GB memory - Brand and suggestions
Harm Millaard Sep 25, 2011 12:32 PM (in response to Rowby Goren)On a X58 mobo you would preferably use triple channel, which is what you get with tri-packs, but if the same memory sticks are sold in dual packs, the most you can get from these sticks is dual channel. Nothing to worry about, if you buy a hexa-kit, it will be triple channel memory.

9. Re: Swapping out 12 GB memory for 24 GB memory - Brand and suggestions
Mike-Baldwin Sep 27, 2011 10:38 PM (in response to Harm Millaard)Harm,
It was my understanding that purchasing memory in 6-packs (or 2 X 3-pack) was mostly just to be super conservative in the off chance to one might get unlucky and be shipped memory from different batches and therefore not recognize each other as being identical. After reading your post, I got concerned and thought I might have blown it by purchasing three 2-packs of RAM sticks and that my memory would only function as dual channel.
However, from my CPU-Z screen it looks like everything worked out okay, wouldn't you agree?
Thanks again for all the shared wisdom!!

10. Re: Swapping out 12 GB memory for 24 GB memory - Brand and suggestions
Harm Millaard Sep 28, 2011 1:07 AM (in response to Mike-Baldwin)Mike,
It is difficult to judge from these screenhots, but if this is gathered from the hex-pack, you can be sure that all sticks come from the same factory and from the same production batch and will therefore be fully compatible. In comparison two tri-packs could come from different factories and different production batches and would require filling one bank of slots with the three sticks from one pack and the second bank with the sticks from the other tri-pack. Usually it does not create problems, since the two banks are electrically separate, but it requires more attention when installing.

11. Re: Swapping out 12 GB memory for 24 GB memory - Brand and suggestions
Mike-Baldwin Sep 28, 2011 8:11 AM (in response to Harm Millaard)Harm,
The relevant part of the screenshots was the upper righthand corner of the top image where it says that the memory is running as triple-channel.
I included the other screenshot in the off chance the it might help Rowby out in case he ever found himself having to figure out what timings to use (that's assuming that the XMP profiles didn't load automatically).
I guess I got lucky then since I purchased my memory in pairs. Hope I didn't use up all of my luck on that blunder. .
Also thanks again for the Noctua cooler recommendation as all my cores are idling at about 35C I think I should be in good shape to OC my 970 at least to 4.0Ghz (fingers-crossed..)

12. Re: Swapping out 12 GB memory for 24 GB memory - Brand and suggestions
rowby Sep 30, 2011 7:08 PM (in response to Mike-Baldwin)After I did a MUCH NEEDED motherboard bios, CPU-Z is finally reporting my DDR3 memory asTriple.
Which is a good lesson -- keep you bios updated.
I had the same problem with my motherboard reporting my DVD drive as a generic CD drive. With a firmware update to my DVD burner, Windows 7 is finally recognizing my DVD burner, so I can boot from the DVD when needed.
