Extension Manager CS5.5 does not open (Windows 7)

    sandy.demi

I've seen lots of issues in the forums about the extension manager not working, and I've tried every suggestion I can find to no avail.  It was working just fine a few weeks ago, but now when I try to start it, the window doesn't open and I have to kill the process from the task manager. I've tried 'Run as administrator', and giving myself full permissions on the Extension Manager folders in the Users directory.  I uninstalled and reinstalled the EM.  Nothing seems to help.

I put an ExManLog.YES file in the directory where the extension manager is installed.  I don't see any errors in the log file that is generated:

[DEBUG] Mon Jul 18 15:15:21 2011 (d:\extensionmanager_5.5_win\20110228.m.163\trelo\source\manager\win\owlmain.cpp,970) -OWL environment initializd OK
      [DEBUG] Mon Jul 18 15:15:21 2011 (d:\extensionmanager_5.5_win\20110228.m.163\trelo\source\manager\win\owlmain.cpp,973) -C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Extension Manager CS5.5

      [DEBUG] Mon Jul 18 15:15:21 2011 (d:\extensionmanager_5.5_win\20110228.m.163\trelo\source\manager\win\owlmain.cpp,1034) -C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Extension Manager CS5.5\ExMan.swf

I need the EM for use with Flash Professional CS5.  I can't open the EM from the executable or from within Flash.  Any help getting this to work would be greatly appreciated.

You should use Extension Manager CS5 to manage extensions for Flash Professional CS5. Extension Manager CS5.5 is used to manage extensions for Flash Professional CS5.5, Dreamweaver CS5.5, and so on.

I had Extension Manager CS5 installed originally.  That is the version that mysteriously stopped working.  I had trouble finding the CS5 version, so I had installed the CS5.5 version instead.

I've uninstalled 5.5 and reinstalled 5, and I still see the same behavior.  Here is what's in ExtensionManager.log

[DEBUG] Thu Jul 21 10:50:55 2011 (d:\extensionmanager_5.0_win\20100305.m.298\trelo\source\manager\win\owlmain.cpp,941) -OWL environment initializd OK

            Any other suggestions?

            Thanks.

              bump:

I am another user who works with sandy.demi and I have the exact same issue. A third member of our lab also had the same issue but it dissapeared after he uninstalled the extensionManager and reinstalled it. I followed the *exact* same steps to uninstall/reinstall multiple times and nothing seems to fix this issue.

I have already tried running the extensionManager as an administrator and still no luck. Any suggestions?

My CS5 Extension Manager started working for a few days last week, then stopped working again today.

I have the debug version of the Flash Player installed, and I noticed that I see the following errors in my Flash Player log when I try to run the extension manager:

                VerifyError: Error #1033

                ReferenceError: Error #1065

That is the only output that is written to the log.

Which version of Flash Player are you using? Try to update to Flash Player 10 if you are using Flash Player 9.

                    I'm using Flash Player 10.

Has anyone figured out a fix for this? I am having the same issue except the CS5 Extension Manager has never worked. My log file is showing the same:

[DEBUG] Wed Aug 17 11:15:44 2011 (d:\extensionmanager_5.0_win\20100305.m.298\trelo\source\manager\win\owlmain.cpp,941) -OWL environment initializd OK

This is really holding up production work and costing the company thousands as long as I don't have access to the CS5 Ext Manager.

Unfortunately, we haven't gotten any feedback from Adobe and they seem to be more or less ignoring this bug. I temporarily fixed the issue by restoring my computer to an older state. However, after a while the extension manager stopped working again. I thought this was related to a Windows7 update but my coworker had the manager start working and stop working without doing an update.

Currently our workaround is to use JSFL to package/compile swc's into the AppData folder location.

Your problem seems have nothing to do with privilege according to the log. SWF file can be loaded but initialization seems failed. Maybe some other softwares/libraries/plug-ins conflict with it.

Thanks for the reply Carl. Are there any suggestions on how we could go about determining what the issue is (or fixing it)? I'm not sure if there is any other information I could post to this forum (logs, error logs?) that could give light to this situation.

If log file generated in your machine has the same content as sandy.demi and SF AJ, then there should be some other softwares interfere with running swf file. Maybe you can find some clues from event viewer of Windows. As sandy.demi said, Extension Manager started working for a few days then stopped working again. Did anything change in his computer those days?

I am going to post this here as well:

I am having the same issue.  I cannot open the Extension Manager to manage or install new dreamweaver extensions.  It runs in the processes but does not open a window.  I have tried everything, except an uninstall and clean install of the entire creative suite (I want to avoid this b/c I have so much to set back up and it would litterally take me a week or more to do that).

Well I kind of figured the issue out here, but still have not found the solution to get it to open in my user account.  The issue is with the Wiindows user account somewhere.

I created a test user account called "test" and gave it administrative rights.

I logged in and clicked on adobe extension manager.  It opened.  The problem is that you cannot install or manage the extensions on one user to use with another windows user account.  BOOOO!

Well does anyone know how I can compare my user settings to see what the heck is causing this issue.  When I check my user account information within the control panel and user accounts it only gives little information that can be updated and the original user account where the extension manager is not working is set to administrator in all aspects.

Please any input would be great from anyone.  It seems there are a lot of people with this issue.

                                Thanks,

                                Ernie T.

Maybe there are some flash-based softwares installed in your machine conflict with Extension Manager. You can try to move all files under "C:\Users\<YourUserName>\AppData\Roaming\Macromedia\Flash Player\#Security\FlashPlayerTrust" to somewhere, then launch Extension Manager. If it worked, You can move those files back one by one to isolate the software which causes this issue.

Well I was able fixed my issue, but only after doing a complete restore of my computer from a backup I had from a month ago.  I did all the updates for microsoft but will keep the flash response above close by in case it happens again to try that.

Thanks and good luck to those of you that are still having the issue and do not have a backup to restore from.

Thank you Carl for your suggestions.

It turned out not to be a permission issue. My issue, like a previous poster, was the Flashbug Firefox plug-in. Once I removed Flashbug from the path you specified everything worked like a charm.

Again, thank you VERY much for your guidance. I’m glad this was relatively easy to resolve. I would have hated to uninstall and reinstall only to have the same issue.

                                      Have a great day!

I had the Flash Firebug plug-in for Firefox installed.  After uninstalling it, the extension manager opens.

                                        Thanks!

I found that by simply disabling Firebug I was able to run the extension Manager. In Firefox go to TOOLS > ADD-ONS...

The strange thing is, after I installed an extension I enabled Firebug again and now Extension Manager opens with no problem. I suspect it will fail in a few days.

The issue of Extension Manager not appearing seems to have been around for at least three years, and it doesn't appear that Adobe has done much (if anything) about helping us on it. Like others in this thread, I am running Windows 7 and suddenly Extension Manager CS5.5 does not open. I have tried all of the tricks that others have suggested here and elsewhere, but nothing has helped. I do see that when Extension Manager runs, it does show as a running process in Task Manager, but there is no display. This happens whether Extension Manager is invoked standalone or from the Dreamweaver menu. Believing that the problem is a conflict with some other process, I used msconfig to load only basic services, and even that didn't help. I even removed CS5.5 and reinstalled CS4, and darn it if that's not working now either.

If anyone has any new ideas, I'd sure like to hear them. And, needless to say, if I come up with "my solution", I'll post it.

Thanks for the suggestion. Actually, disabling firebug is the first thing I tried. It didn't help. So I uninstalled it altogether. Still no go.

Yea I am super disappointed in adobe for this one. Their tech support is no help at all. For the amount of money we paid for the adobe software u would think they would help. Disappointed

It seems that Extension Manager works fine in the past as you said SUDDENLY Extension Manager CS5.5 does not open. If it is true, please delete C:\Users\<YourUserName>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Extension Manager CS5.5\Configuration\Extensions\exman_uiPreferences.xml then relaunch Extension Manager.

Well, I had removed firebug several times before and Extension Manager still wouldn't present, even after cold restarts. Today I had a reason to reboot because of totally unrelated issue and ... voila ... Extension Manager suddenly presented normally. Go figure....

                                                        Hi there,

I have the same problem. The load bar gets to about 60% and it hangs. I have tried all suggestions above with no joy. Can anyone suggest another solution???? Most frustrating because I depend heavily on extensions

Please rename all XManConfig.xml files under CS product install folders, then launch Extension Manager. If EM launches successfully, rename XManConfig.xml back one by one, launch EM every time you rename one XManConfig.xml back so as to know the extension of which product causes this issue. After the product is determined, generate log files and search the last extension name which appears in log files. Remove the files of that extension from the cache folder of this product (You can search the zxp/mxp file in disk to know where the cache folder is).

Have you installed DMXzone Calendar 2 extension? If yes, please move this extension related files out of C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Extension Manager CS5.5\Configuration\Extensions then retry.

Having this same problem, I noticed when I launched Extension Manager and moused over the application in the task bar, it would should me the image of the app running (Windows 7). The behavior was just that I couldn't "see it" on the screen, and that made me suspicious about the window position.

Using the post information from Carl Sun, I opened the exman_uiPreferences.xml file and sure enough the entry for the x_position of the window had a minus - sign in front of it. I edited the entry to remove the minus sign, saved the file, launched Extension Manager, and voila problem solved. No idea if this is the same issue everyone else is experiencing or not...

                                                                     C:\Users\<YourUserName>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Extension Manager CS5.5\Configuration\Extensions\exman_uiPreferences.xml

                                                                2. Check position entries for negative values

                                                                  <windowPosition_x>-946</windowPosition_x>

                                                                  <windowPosition_y>181</windowPosition_y>

                                                                3. Change negative value to positive and save.

Also, can you paste this file's contents if it is indeed causing this bug. Finally, please make sure you're using FlashFirebug 4.54 while testing. Feedback highly appreciated. Thanks!

As noted in my post of Sep 27, 2012, my problem was a negative value in the X window position in the extension manager preferences file exman_uiPreferences.xml in my roaming profile.
