rowby Sep 29, 2011 9:16 AM (in response to Harm Millaard)HI Harm,
I went into the ASUS bios and changed the AI Overclock Tuner to Manual. I was given 4 choices
Manual
Auto
D.O.C.P
X.M.P.
And saved the BIOS configuration settings. (Went in again and double checked it and it remains at Manual.) BTW, Bios says System Memory Usable Size 16376MB after I went in and double checked the second time.
However Windows 7 Professional in Control Panel System still says "Installed Memory 16.0 GB"

JSS1138 Sep 29, 2011 9:21 AM (in response to rowby)The CPU-Z report show dual channel memory, but the board supports triple channel memory. Curious.
I wonder if you might have a couple of bad modules on your hands.

7. Re: Windows 7 System only recognizing 16GB out of 24GB newly installed
Harm Millaard Sep 29, 2011 9:29 AM (in response to rowby)You should not use the AI Overclock utility, but only the Advanced settings tab. First get the memory to work correctly. If needed, I can make pictures of my BIOS settings. I had the same problem initially, but it was easily resolved by turning off XMP profiles.

9. Re: Windows 7 System only recognizing 16GB out of 24GB newly installed
ECBowen Sep 29, 2011 10:30 AM (in response to rowby)Unfortunately you have run into the ram compatibility/timing issue with the sticks and memory controller on the cpu. There are several bios settings you have to change/setup to configure the ram. If you dont want to deal with those then you can try moving the pairs around and see if any pair will start playing better with a different partner. Harm's idea was one of the ways to try and deal with it as well. I can post the bios settings if you want to change them.

rowby Sep 29, 2011 10:55 AM (in response to ECBowen)HI
Let's try changing the bios settings first. The memory came as a pak so hopefully they will play together without moving them around.
Please post the bios settings that might fix this.
Thanks!

11. Re: Windows 7 System only recognizing 16GB out of 24GB newly installed
ECBowen Sep 29, 2011 11:23 AM (in response to rowby)Well before you do the settings, you need to get the bios updated for the memory compatibility.
http://support.asus.com/download.aspx?SLanguage=en&p=1&m=P6X58D+Premium&hashedid=wurRaDZ8l o4Ckukj
Version 1501
Make sure you go down to 1 stick when you run this update. Also load optimized defaults after it updates on the next bootup then save and exit so the board re-detects all of the ram timings. Power down the system and then install the rest of the ram. The bios settings come after that once we see what the ram detection is.

15. Re: Windows 7 System only recognizing 16GB out of 24GB newly installed
ECBowen Sep 29, 2011 11:49 AM (in response to rowby)Ok you need to try each stick 1 at a time in slot 0 on the board and see if each one will post the system correctly. See if any 1 stick besides that one will not allow the system to post. Put any of those to the side. Once you narrow that down then you can run the update.

Windows now shows 24GB of memory!
Just doing the bios update fixed it all.
Thanks Erid and Harm! This forum is an incredible resource.
I'm sure I need to do some things to further refine the bios settings, but this is certainly a relief.
I will leave this discussion open in case there are any updates.
In the meantime I am going to post another question regarding the memory in my Areca board... Stay tuned.

ECBowen Sep 29, 2011 1:46 PM (in response to rowby)The bios settings then are just for performance optimization. I would download this tonight and make a disc from the ISO. Restart the system before you go to bed and let this run all night. Make sure there are no errors when you wake up in the morning. If you get any errors, then you will have to play with the bios settings after all.

25. Re: Windows 7 System only recognizing 16GB out of 24GB newly installed
rowby Sep 29, 2011 5:51 PM (in response to rowby)Hi
Extracted the gz onto my drive and then clicked on the img and created an CD (see attached photo)
Set the bios to boot from the CD first priority (see attached photos)
However, Windows 7 refuses to boot from the cd -- keeps booting to Windows 7 rather than botting from the cd.
When I tried, in bios, completely disabling the hard drive, and only enabling the cd drive, during bootup windows complains about there not being a bootabe drive -- and I have to alt-control-delete to reboot.
So it appears that there is nothing to "boot" from, on the cd, which is why Windows 7 can't boot from it.

I put the cd in my laptop, set the CD to be the first drive and -- the computer booted from the cd.
So I'm trying to figure out why my editing computer won't boot from the cd.

27. Re: Windows 7 System only recognizing 16GB out of 24GB newly installed
rowby Sep 29, 2011 6:28 PM (in response to rowby)Interesting. I disconnected the CD cables (power and the the other cable) and rebooted.
Bios, under Boot Device Priority is still showing as the 2nd boot device "ATAPI CD-ROM".
Now I'm wondering, my burner is a DVD not a CD. So is it possible that the "ATAPI CD-ROM" is some sort of a generic identification in bios, and in fact BIOS is not seeing my DVD burner at at all?
However windows 7certainly saw the "CD drive" when it let me burn the iso to the cd... Baffled!

29. Re: Windows 7 System only recognizing 16GB out of 24GB newly installed
ECBowen Sep 30, 2011 8:33 AM (in response to rowby)That is a generic listing for boot device. You want to look for a listing that includes the model number for your DVD drive. That is the way most boards list optical drives now days.

Rowby Goren Sep 30, 2011 10:20 AM (in response to ECBowen)Okay! Updated my firmware and the board finally correctly ID'd the dvd burner. And I was able to boot from the CD.
Now I'm running Memtest86. v4.20.
Running 17 minutes so far and no errors.
Running Test #4 right now.
I'll let it run all day, I guess!
I see a (c)configuration item on the bottom of the screen. I am ignoring that and am running the test in its default settings.
