Extrude method in Photoshop CS5 (regular version)

    doane2u Community Member

I have CS5 and would like to find an easier way to create the look of thickness to a object on a layer. Bevel and imboss don't work. I realize now I should have got the extended version of CS5, but now it's too late!

I currantly go about it in a rather slow way by duplicating the layer, off setting it from the one below, darkening the lower one, filling in the corners, etc.  Anyone have any other ideas that might create a shallow extruded look, like a piece of tile would have viewed from a slight angle where two edges would show?  Thanks,

A google search for 3d text in photoshop should turn up lots of turtorials, but the basics for one way are:

(the basics concepts apply to any object , not just text)

          1. Make a text or shape layer (you can practice on regular objects also)

          2. Select the move tool and press the alt key while alternating between say the down and right arrow keys.

(this duplicates the layer each time you press the arrow key)

(how many layers depends on your judgement, but usually between 10 and 20 will due)

          3. Tuirn off the visiblity of the original text (shape) layer and your background layer/s if you have any.

          4. Then merge the visible layers (the other text layers that were created by nudging with the arrow keys)

          5. Move the original text layer above the merged layers and add a drop shadow layer style

(that gives the look of 3d)

          6. Add whatever other effects to the merged layer you want like maybe a soft dropshadow.

          Untitled-4.png

Thanks, that works rather well... easier then what I had come up with.
