Hi!
I'm trying to set up an image in captivate with clickable buttons then record the image using captivate. Whenever I try to do a recording it minimized captivate so I can't record my screen. Is there a way to use captivate to record a captivate process? I tried searching for it with no luck.

Hi there
Unfortunately it's just not possible to record Captivate using Captivate. Perhaps it will help by saying you cannot use a camera to take a picture of itself? In other words, you need another camera to take a picture of the first, no? Same goes with Captivate.
If all you want is the image, perhaps you could try different approaches. Export the image file from Captivate. Or if you want to record what happens with the image, publish as SWF or EXE and run that. Then record it.
If you really need to record how to do something in Captivate, you *MIGHT* try running a second instance in order to record the first. But I'm not sure that would even work. The only way I've ever done it was by using Camtasia Studio to record Captivate.
Cheers... Rick

Hello,
You do not tell which version of Captivate you are using? I have been creating some video tutorials about Captivate, using either a second instance of Captivate (it works, Rick in CP5/5.5 at least, some more editing for automatically generated captions) or use a different version. The tutorial in this article was captured with CP4 and the app was CP5:

Yes, indeed I was aware of that and have actually done it myself. What I failed to convey was that you cannot use Captivate to record from start to finish, the process of using Captivate to record a sequence of actions. Sure, you can get close, but it chokes and pukes when you reach the point where the instance you are recording goes to hit the record button. At that point the house of cards implodes.
Sorry for any confusion.
Cheers... Rick

Hi Rick,
Oh yes, imagine that is not possible at all. Perhaps I did not understand the question, it seemed to be that it was not that kind of recording to be done.

I’m using captivate 5.5. I’m sorry if I wasn’t clear enough I’m really new to captivate. What I’m trying to do is create training courses on how to use the features on a phone. So I was going to upload a photo of the phone, make each button an image button and then wanted to use captivate to record clicking the buttons so I get the timing and captions I need. Does that make more sence?

If you have access to an earlier version of Captivate on the same machine, e.g. Captivate 4 as well as Captivate 5, then you may find you can record the entire process by having the earlier Captivate versio record the later one. Worth a try, but only good if you can get both apps on the same PC.
