1. Re: Stuttery playback in Premiere (fine in Vegas)
Colin Brougham Oct 15, 2011 11:59 AM (in response to legs2sag)Try right-clicking on the Program Monitor (the one tied to your sequence), and going to Playback Resolution > Full. It's likely defaulting to 1/2.

legs2sag Oct 15, 2011 1:01 PM (in response to Colin Brougham)Thank you, Colin.
One of the first things I did was to see what the preview quality was - it was full resolution. I had intended to try reducing it to half to see if that would make a difference, but the option was greyed out.

Colin Brougham Oct 15, 2011 1:43 PM (in response to legs2sag)Got it. What MJPEG decoder are you using? Premiere Pro doesn't ship with one (for MJPEG AVIs, anyway), so there must be something installed. Morgan and MainConcept are popular choices that--I believe--work well in CS5/CS5.5.

legs2sag Oct 15, 2011 1:55 PM (in response to Colin Brougham)What decoder? I have no idea!
Vegas ships with MainConcept, so Vegas must be using that. As for VLC, I have no idea what it's using.
Do you think that the FFDShow collection of codecs might help? I like to keep my system clean, and installing codecs willy-nilly may lead to issues.

legs2sag Oct 15, 2011 2:18 PM (in response to John T Smith)Thank you John - I was reading other posts about it as you were posting. I've always been suspicious of it.
If Premiere can't smoothly display these video files, I'll just edit them in Vegas, instead. That isn't supposed to sound stroppy. I'm really keen to learn the Premiere workflow, and editing a few of these files for my own amusement would have helped me learn the Premiere way of doing things. I'm so used to Vegas that Premiere seems impossibly hard at times! That said, some effects in Premiere are so much easier than in Vegas.
I think I'll search the forums for MJPEG.
Thanks for the pointers.

Ann Bens Oct 15, 2011 2:20 PM (in response to legs2sag)Its Motion Jpeg.
This one works just fine: http://www.mainconcept.com/en/products/apps-plug-ins/codecs-conversion/motion-jpeg.html

Bill Hunt Oct 15, 2011 3:55 PM (in response to legs2sag)As for VLC, and some other players, there are built-in playback CODEC's, so many CODEC's, that are not installed in the system, can still be played back. Unfortunately, that can give one a false sense of security.
Good luck,
Hunt

legs2sag Oct 16, 2011 3:23 AM (in response to legs2sag)Thanks for all your relies.
I have discovered which codec Sony is using to decode the video, but it seems only to work with Vegas. So that explains how Vegas is doing things.
I have downloaded and installed the Morgan Motion JPEG decoder. Although it did improve playback, it was still jittery, especially where fast-ish pans were encountered.
The MainConcept solution is my next step. I'll report back ASAP.

Hmm. I uninstalled Morgan, and installed MainConcept. MC doesn't do a thing! Playback is as stuttery as ever. But the reinstallation of Morgan is doing nothing now, either. Very odd. More troubleshooting to undertake...

10. Re: Stuttery playback in Premiere (fine in Vegas)
legs2sag Oct 16, 2011 11:12 AM (in response to legs2sag)OK, after much searching, and with a great deal of thanks to everyone who posted a response, I think I've found an answer to the problem. Before I reveal the solution that worked for me, I'll outline some of the problems I encountered aside from the original issue posted above.
Installing the Morgan decoder worked to an extent, although playback still wasn't 100% smooth. I checked settings, and all seemed well, but I deceided to try the MainConcept decoder. Morgan unistalled smoothly and MC installed smoothly, but did not work at all. So I uninstalled it, and installed Morgan again. However, this time Morgan didn't work at all and I could no longer access the settings although the icon was on the system tray.
This was a real head scratcher... Morgan's helpfile was next to useless. Bt after a long search I found that for Windows Vista (and and 7) a change needs to be made to the registry to force the codec to work. Have a look at this article for more information; the first section is the relevant part.Although this relates to VirtualDub, it applies equally to the Morgan decoder: http://www.virtualdub.org/docs_codecs.html.
I had to copy the morgon dlls to the \windowszsystem32 folder, but having done so I was able to remove all other Morgan files, and Premiere is playing my footage very nicely.
Hope this helps others who have the same problem.
