    "Loading" Takes Way Too Long

    suzzie12 Community Member

Have Lightroom 3.5 on Win XP

The word "Loading" takes 15 seconds to go away...and for my images to come into focus... so I can work on them.

I have tried various things to speed up this behavior like loading 1:1 previews (still takes 10 seconds to focus up on each 8 meg NEF Raw image).  I also tried Standard Prevews and that doesnt help much.  I was thinking that taking the extra time to 1:1 would speed things up...nope.

Its very frustrating when I have to wait Soo Long to see my images.  They are there on screen...Out of focus...And I cant work on any of them without waiting 10-15sec.

My monitor is a 1024x786...I have 4 gigs Ram... and a fast scratch disk...should I choose a certain preview size?

      Thanks for your help

      Suzzie

Also...unrelated.  I tried to get e-mail notifications here...and I get everyones update...can I do something to just get mo own replies via e-mail??

What you describe happens on my underpowered home computer which has only one 2.4 GHz CPU core, 4GB of memory, a 32-bit operating system and 6-year-old motherboard technology.  On my 2-year-old 64-bit quad-core computer with 8GB of memory, things run much faster.

A 32-bit CPU and operating system can only use 3GB of memory so 1GB of your memory is wasted.

Having extra things turned on like lens-profiles and noise-reduction makes the Develop render slower, too.

If you want LR to run well you need a good computer, an i7 CPU with 8GB of memory would be my suggestion, although you’ll probably see others running with a bit less and not being as slow as yours.

            Suzzie,

You might find the following useful:

As for your question about receiving emails of replies to your original post, I think that's a setting in Preferences that makes replies to your own posts automatic.  There must be another setting for receiving all posts -- and that's not the one you want.

I've tried pretty much everything out there Suzzie and LR is one of the fastest RAW editors available. For loading and tethering C1 Pro is marginally quicker but for sliders and especially localized brushed editing LR leaves the competition (all of it) for dust.

Like anything computer related the better the hardware the better the software performs. Try quitting all other programs, processes and maybe disabling antivirus software when committing to a LR session.  Maybe defrag your harddrive and run some optimization software, sorry I'm Mac so i don't know what good cleaning software there is for windows.

Example for Mac, itunes is Lightroom's Kryptonite
