Thumbnail play indicator on mp3 disappeared

    doane2u Community Member

I haven't used bridge too much so excuse me if this is a dumb question, but I can't figure it out. I have PS CS5 and in full Bridge I was looking at a bunch of mp3 files and trying out different settings like marking them for review, etc. When I clicked on any mp3 thumbnail it would automatically start playing with a play indicator below the thumb's rating and name. They were all working. I then selected one thumb mp3 and gave it a rating of 4 and the thumb changed and has no indication of the play indicator and no longer automatically plays when I select it. The other thumbs still play and I can change their ratings and they still play and show the indicator. This one file though now only plays if I right click and selct open which opens a pop up window. It still shows the star ratings and name but not the play indicator. I tried purging the cache, it isn't locked and I can see nothing else that would cause it to suddenly not play automatically.

What am I doing wrong?  Thanks,

I would check the file name closely.  If you inadently put in an extra character it might make the file unreadable.  For instance xxx.wav.wav

I checked the the file name and extension are fine and they work fine in other browsers like ACDsee PHoto Manager 12, Windows 7 browser, etc. This is happening to some other mp3 music files I have rated as well and I can't see any differences in the properties panel between the ones that show the play indicator and the ones that no longer show it.

This brings up another point.. if the Bridge data base can become corrupted, (is it now?) is there a way to restore it to an earlier version.. is there a way to back it up and what files does one look for to back up?  Maybe I should start this as a new discussion?

            Thanks,

I don't know about mp3 files and how the data is handled.  With photofiles some of the data is written to the file and other data is written to the XMP file - same name different extension.  If you move such a file you need to make sure the xmp file moves with it.  It is a hidden file so go to View and click Show Hidden Files.

The XMP file can be deleted in Edit/Develop Settings/Clear Settings.  This will set this file back to the original state.

Like I said don't know if mk3 has a XMP file generated with edits but worth a check.  If so delete it and see if it reverts to normal.

Thanks, Curt, no luck though. I changed the folder view to show hidden and protected files but nothing showed up in the folder associated with the mp3 files except the thumbnail icons.

And, is there a way to back up the data base for Bridge, export it, import it, etc.?

Unclear as to what you call the data base for Bridge.  With jpeg images all the data is stored on the file. Collections, keyword database, and others are in User/app data/roaming.

Do you have your data on a backup disk?  This is highly recommended as you will loose data at some future date through either a disk failure, or inadvertant deleteing of file, or some other unexplained occasion like you are having now.  You can do this either as a DVD or on a seperate physical hard drive.  I have had 3 hard drives fail in 20 years and all data was lost.

If you have a backup of the file try that and see it it returns to normal.  If it does not then you might try to reset preferences by holding down Ctrl key and starting Bridge.  You should get a reset window.  If it worked before and not now, and no hardware or software as added this is a usually a good bet.

I'm not talking about embeded file EXIF or IPCT data. I was concerned about the Bridge data added... ratings, notes, catagories, etc., and where they are all kept? I would want that backed up so that if the data base becomes corrupted I don't lose all the work and time I have spent on it, along with a way to easily resore it. Normally, there is no way to even see the path you mentioned. When I uncheck the hide protected opperating system files I can see the folder for user\app data but I can't even open it, even as administrator. Maybe something to do with Windows 7?  Anyway, I would have thought there would be a built in data back up like ACDSee has in it's browsers.

I am leary of doing a reset as I am afraid I will lose all the set up preferences I have and I have no idea what else it might reset. I did look on line at Adobe but haven't found any clear information about this. I have suffered data loss years ago with early versions of ACDSee before they improved their back up and restore features of their data base and it is a huge loss when you no longer have all the key words, catagories, ratings, etc. that you have spent endless hours on. They now have the option of using "side car" data files that move with the files, I think this is an excellent idea.

                    Thanks,

The "data base" you want is neither protected or hidden.  It is at C:/Users/name/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Bridge.  This is in Win7.

If this data is not on the image it is written to the XMP "sidecar file".

Tried that yesterday and it won't let me in, but tonight I was able to open the folders. Also, in folder settings I can't even see the "app data" folder unless I check the "show hidden files and folders" under the "View" tab.. that would be the same on your computer as well if you have Win 7 or XP. I wonder if it had something to do with my Norton AV?

Anyway, thanks, yes I see the files now under the Adobe Bridge CS5 folder and there are a bunch of sub folders with xml data files for presets, collections, keywords, etc. I guess the thing would be to back up that whole folder and sub folder, but is there no way to do backups from with in the program instead of having to dig down into system folders?

                        Thanks,

I still think the best protection is to back up all your images to a different drive or DVD..

Export the keywords to a seperate file.  Open keywords panel and click on upper right corner.  Select Export.

Open the saved file and see if there is anything that is missing.
