miketrobo Oct 3, 2011 4:48 AM (in response to Neverends Productions)Iam having the same problem AME stops working on complex or long encodes on my desktop machine. But my lap top a Dell xps encodes without any hitch? I wonder if its a graphics card issue as the desktop machine will encode if I turn off the mecury engine and run in software only.

43. Re: Media Encoder Stops Encoding with the New CS5.5
Paul_Duffey Oct 3, 2011 7:06 AM (in response to miketrobo)Mike why don't you give it a try and see. I'm rendering some video today too so I'll give a try as well.

44. Re: Media Encoder Stops Encoding with the New CS5.5
Paul_Duffey Oct 3, 2011 7:39 AM (in response to Paul_Duffey)Actually I don't have the time to test it. One of my 44 clips that was only 3mins renders in realtime with gpu and is estimated 16mins with software only. But I would assume it has something to do with the gpu or driver of the gpu based on what you said. Also I never had this trouble with past projects, and it's at the beginning of this project that I got the GTX 570.

45. Re: Media Encoder Stops Encoding with the New CS5.5
Paul_Duffey Oct 3, 2011 10:49 AM (in response to Paul_Duffey)I did want to note that I actually didn't have the most current driver updates for my card. Also I'd thought I'd had the latest updates for CS5.5 because I purchased and downloaded it no more than 2 weeks ago, but I actually didn't have the most current updates for that either. When I did the update it updated WME and Premiere.
Now I've queued up all 44 videos videos in WME, it did pause one time when reading XMP data on the 4th or 5th one in the queue and I had to force close WME in the task manager. Then I restarted it and it's now done 8 so far with no hiccups.
It seems to be running better at least, if not perfect. Lesson learned on assuming to have the most current updates and drivers.,

46. Re: Media Encoder Stops Encoding with the New CS5.5
RFendelman Oct 3, 2011 11:07 AM (in response to Neverends Productions)I'm still having lock-up issues.
A litle advice....
Currently, I'm Encoding straight from PPro an MPEG2-DVD. I changed a few things on the pre-set: Quality 5.0, CBR, selected Use Previews and Use Maximum Render Quality.
It's been sitting at 60% for about a half hour.
Is it stopped or still working?
Activity Monitor shows Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 with around 188% fluctuating and does NOT show Not-Responding.
My software is up to date per a check just now.
I know from previous experiece that if I select Cancel, it won't close and the Activity Monitor will eventually read that the program is Not Responding.
BTW, I'm on an iMac, 4gb ram, 10.6.8 Snow Leopard

47. Re: Media Encoder Stops Encoding with the New CS5.5
Paul_Duffey Oct 3, 2011 11:14 AM (in response to RFendelman)I'm on PC, so I'm not sure what the equivilent is, but I use the Performance Monitor in Task manager to view if it's really locked up or not. While rendering I see all my logical cores running 50-90% while it's rendering, when it stops or locks up that usually goes to around 3% on my i7. When it does that for more than a minute I'll force close it knowing it's locked up.
If you have a certified vga I'd say make sure you have the latest driver for that. I know with mac there's less cards that are "certified", and I think the certified part has more to do with the driver than the chipset of the card. Other than that, I wouldn't really know where to check.

48. Re: Media Encoder Stops Encoding with the New CS5.5
RFendelman Oct 3, 2011 11:25 AM (in response to Paul_Duffey)Thanks, Paul.
I see that the CPU is around 190%, 48 threads, Real Mem 1.59 GB, Virtual Mem 1.96 GB.
I wonder if one clue is that the Disk Activity readout shows 0 bytes/sec read and only 68 KB/sec written.
I think that's a sign nothings happening.
I guess I'm going to re-boot the system and try again.
I just wonder if I'm better off Encoding directly with Export or choose Queue.
I don't have a lot of faith in the Media Encoder anymore.
My client is waiting for this DVD.

49. Re: Media Encoder Stops Encoding with the New CS5.5
Paul_Duffey Oct 3, 2011 11:44 AM (in response to RFendelman)yes the 0% on the writes would be your indication, that will save you waiting to see if it's actually timed out. Are you using a VGA acceleration? and do you have the current driver update?

50. Re: Media Encoder Stops Encoding with the New CS5.5
Mark Mapes Oct 3, 2011 12:27 PM (in response to RFendelman)Richard,
What's the total memory usage? That is, not just AME's but for the whole system? Real and virtual.
Evidence is pointing to this problem being a combination of a) GPU accelleration being enabled in PPRO, and b) AME addressing memory above the 4GB threshold. It may also be limited to certain CUDA cards. Note that it's not necessary for AME itself to be using more than 4GB of RAM but rather that the cumulative memory usage is >4GB.
As to how we failed to catch this bug before release, we actually did find and fix a very similar bug late in the CS5.5 cycle. We thought we had it completely covered, but it looks like we missed a variant of it. If, that is, our current suspicions are correct about the combination of factors that are involved.
We're very interested to know whether switching the renderer in Premiere Pro to Software Only avoids the problem in all cases. Please try this and report your findings.

54. Re: Media Encoder Stops Encoding with the New CS5.5
Paul_Duffey Oct 3, 2011 5:31 PM (in response to RFendelman)There's not a setting in Adobe Media Encoder's menus, it's in Premiere. Look under Project>Project Settings>General and you'll see the Video Rendering and Playback block where you can set it to GPU acceleration or software only. Then when you use Encore it initiates PProHeadless.exe....which renders the files based on that setting.

55. Re: Media Encoder Stops Encoding with the New CS5.5
Todd_Kopriva Oct 3, 2011 5:34 PM (in response to RFendelman)> How do I find where to set to Software only?
It's a project setting in Adobe Premiere Pro. Look in the Project Settings dialog box for the Renderer menu.
[Edit: Looks like Paul beat me to it.]

56. Re: Media Encoder Stops Encoding with the New CS5.5
RFendelman Oct 3, 2011 5:46 PM (in response to Mark Mapes)In Project Settings/General/Video Rendeing and Playback/Renderer:, the drop-down is greyed out. So, I never had a choice. I assume that means that I've always been rendering in software only. Unless there is another setting somewhere else. I cant' find one.

57. Re: Media Encoder Stops Encoding with the New CS5.5
Mark Mapes Oct 3, 2011 6:01 PM (in response to RFendelman)You're correct that if the option is greyed out, then you're system is locked on Software Only. That's generally (if not exclusively) because your graphics card is not a supported CUDA card.
So we'll definitely want to drill deeper in your case to figure out what's going on. It's possible, indeed likely, that we're dealing with two different issues that happen to manifest similarly, with encoding failing to complete.

58. Re: Media Encoder Stops Encoding with the New CS5.5
RFendelman Oct 3, 2011 6:18 PM (in response to Mark Mapes)Is it possible that you could call me now and work on it. I'm up against a deadline with a big client and need to get a DVD asap. I've been on hold for tech support now for about half an hour and still waiting.
They had suggested 'unhiding root admin', which I did, but it didn't help. However, I really didn't know what to do after that, so I just tried to make an mpeg2 which froze again at 89%. The activity monitor showed about 3.4 GB at that freeze out of 4.

60. Re: Media Encoder Stops Encoding with the New CS5.5
Mark Mapes Oct 4, 2011 3:46 PM (in response to RFendelman)To tie up one of the threadlets here, Richard & I troubleshot his issue yesterday. It seems to be a memory usage problem. Closing PPRO cleared enough headroom for AME to successfully finish encoding, at least for the 7 minute sequence that was getting stuck.
My gut tells me that Richard's case--no CUDA card/GPU acceleration and 4GB of RAM--is fundamentally different from others here who have GPU enabled with more than 4 GB of RAM, & where RAM is not close to maxing out when encoding hangs.
If anybody else is basically in the same boat as Richard, please try shutting down PPRO and any other apps that are consuming significant chunks of RAM, and then starting encoding in AME.

61. Re: Media Encoder Stops Encoding with the New CS5.5
RFendelman Oct 6, 2011 8:23 PM (in response to Mark Mapes)Whew.....finall finished my three projects with PPro 5.5 and now I can comment on my recent experience. Firstly, thank you Mark for your dedication to helping. I'm a 'JUMPER', from FCP to the Adobe Suite. The support I've gotten from Mark and the Forum is amazing. The software is amazing. I don't know why all those Apple editors aren't jumping....shhhhh. Don't thell them, keep it a secret. FCP X and even 7 doesn't hold a candle to Premiere Pro CS5.5. It's so much more sophisticated.
My problem solved: Freezing program on Export most of the time.
Solution: I'm on an iMac with 4 GB of ram. I've just discovered the Activity Monitor and see that PPro takes up from 1.5 GB to 2.5 GB. On a large project I'm running up to 3.99 GB. I didn't realize that PPro and AME together were just too much for my system. My Export freezes around 3.45 GB. Now, I close PPro during Render/Export or making a DVD and even the most intensive codec runs without any problems. Memory load is around 2.5-3 GB. I can't wait until the new MacPRo comes out so I can load up on ram and a Mercury engine.
One more thing. I received an unexpected FedX package today. It was a gift form Adobe for buying into Adobe Suite, an small Adobe portable speaker system for something like an iPod and an Adobe foam type zippered laptop case. The gesture is much appreciated. Thanks

62. Re: Media Encoder Stops Encoding with the New CS5.5
Zack Scott Oct 26, 2011 7:38 AM (in response to Neverends Productions)I just want to add that I'm experiencing the same issues that others here are having. I'll queue up 4 or 5 videos to render overnight, and when I return in the morning, it will have stopped during one of them. There is never an error, and I have to force stop it in Task Manager. When I restart AME, my queue history is often gone, or it just has one or two videos that I had previously queued and already encoded (but AME has them marked as not yet encoded).
I can't recreate this process whenever I want. It just sometimes happens sporadically for no apparent reason. Also, I am using the Mercury GPU acceleration, and I have not tried this without it.
Here are my answers to Mark's original questions:
1. It is from a Premiere Sequence
2. As far as I can tell, it does not hang at the same point, but I'll keep a closer eye on this situation.
3. These are all video clips, AVI format, 1080p resolution, recorded with FRAPS. I am rendering to mp4 at 720p.
4. No effects are applied except Scale to Frame Size.
5. Memory usuage seems high and tied up. I'll have to pay closer attention to the CPU, but it seems to be low or none.

63. Re: Media Encoder Stops Encoding with the New CS5.5
AdferoVideo Oct 26, 2011 7:38 AM (in response to Neverends Productions)Hi,
Has this problem been resolved yet?
I upgraded to cs5.5 yesterday and now AME is useless! It's much slower than it was on cs5, and like the other people in the forum, it freezes without giving any error. I have been rendering by turning off gpu acceleration and just exporting from premiere instead of sending it to media encoder. I don't think RAM is a problem, I've got 24gb, you'd hope that would be enough. It was super slow even with gpu accelleration turned on, so something is going really wrong.
I'm exporting an on2 flv file from a fairly basic timeline. I'm using a 3rd party plugin by Red Giant called Quick Looks. The piece I'm trying to encode is only 2.5 minutes long. I'm testing now to see if it renders using AME with the gpu acceleration turned off, it's very slow, but seems to be going through. This is quite distressing, as I missed a deadline yesterday because of the encoding speed. I really expected that after installing this expensive upgrade it would take the same time to render as it usually does, or speed it up a bit even. I'm really glad we held off on upgrading our other video workstations now, at least my workmates are able to get some work done.

64. Re: Media Encoder Stops Encoding with the New CS5.5
Paul_Duffey Oct 26, 2011 7:42 AM (in response to Zack Scott)Zack, you gotta make sure you have the most current updates for your video card, and the most current updates for your adobe software. I thought I had them already when I was having the trouble cause I loaded the drivers for my new card from the disk, and I purchased and downloaded the software from adobe, but no, I actually didn't have the "most current" drivers and updates for both. Once I did that the troubles were gone. Also the videos staying in the queue is actually a setting somewhere under AME.
For me I noticed the longer the video was the more likely it locked up without the updates. With 3 or 4 videos that were short it might not lock up, but if one of the videos were 10 mins or so, it would lock up, or if the 4th video of 4 wound up making the cumulative total be more than 10-15 mins of all clips, then it would probably lock up.
But anyway, make sure you video card is on the certified list, and make sure you're looking at the most updated list. I've googled and seen older lists that didnt include the gtx570, which is what I'm using,..but the most current one has them all.

65. Re: Media Encoder Stops Encoding with the New CS5.5
Zack Scott Oct 26, 2011 7:51 AM (in response to Paul_Duffey)Thanks Paul, I am trying this out. I assumed I was mostly up-to-date, but there were new video card drivers for my GTX580 as of two days ago. Also, I'm updating to Premiere 5.5.1. I'll report back if I still have issues after the updates.
-
66. Re: Media Encoder Stops Encoding with the New CS5.5
DirtyLowPull Oct 26, 2011 7:54 AM (in response to Paul_Duffey)>>Also the videos staying in the queue is actually a setting somewhere under
AME
After AME stops functioning and you kill the process, when AME is
subsequently restarted the queue WILL BE in an unknown state - it is VERY
likely that it will show items in the queue that it has
already successfully encoded as "waiting" and it will try to re-encode them.
If you run with the auto increment option enabled you'll have a mess to
clean up after.
You CAN NOT rely on the AME queue alone in your workflow. You will need to
police it with an external audit list of what you told it to do if you
expect 100% results.
AME is probably driving from a text file that IS NOT updated after each job
is completed; when you kill a process that has a handle to a text file the
buffers to that file are not flushed to disk. So on restart AME is lost. I
find manually deleting completed records from AME before killing the process
sometimes seems to help convince it that I want it to persist the state.

67. Re: Media Encoder Stops Encoding with the New CS5.5
RFendelman Oct 26, 2011 7:56 AM (in response to AdferoVideo)I have Looks the full version and I'm always wondering if that is messing me up sometimes. I solved my AME problem by closing PPro before starting the encode and it worked for me and I only have 4GB ram on an iMac. Although, I only encode one project at a time. I've never tried a group of projects. Are you on a Mac or PC? Do you watch the Activity Monitor to see what is going on? Wish I could help more.

69. Re: Media Encoder Stops Encoding with the New CS5.5
Neverends Productions Oct 26, 2011 8:16 AM (in response to Paul_Duffey)Paul, all of my components are up to date and have been for a long time. It's very frustrating to have this issue go on so long then to get emails from Adobe saying you closed the case because of the length of time. I have not heard back in a long time. This problem is not going to fix itself.

70. Re: Media Encoder Stops Encoding with the New CS5.5
h2ofun Oct 26, 2011 8:19 AM (in response to Paul_Duffey)I tried to have about 4 videos in AME in the que, with each about 4 hours long. I could never get 5.5 to work. Even 5 was flaky. So, I just went back and exported them one at a time from PP, and it has worked everytime now. Since each takes about 20 hours to encode, I wasted way way too much time with AME.
-
71. Re: Media Encoder Stops Encoding with the New CS5.5
Paul_Duffey Oct 26, 2011 8:26 AM (in response to Neverends Productions)Neverends, when you say "they have been for a long time", does that mean you havent updated for a long time, or does that mean you recently checked and go the most updated driver in the last week. Because my driver on my card has been updated a few times and its only been out a couple months. Also I had a lot of windows updates that I needed to do.
For me all the problems on here were textbook exact the same, until I updated the most current driver from Nvidia for my card.
And H2o, if you're taking 20 hours to encode one file, yeah then I'd just do one at a time out of premiere. AME doesn't really benefit unless you have shorter clips you want to run over night.
All that being said, everyone should know I'm running vista ultimate with an i970 hexicore (12 logical cores) and 24 gigs of ram. I'm sure if you're running ame with 6gigs or whatever the minimum is, then there could be other issues with things,..I know video programs handle cacheing and page files different depending on the system resources, or atleast I'd imagine it does.

72. Re: Media Encoder Stops Encoding with the New CS5.5
Jeff Bellune Oct 26, 2011 8:29 AM (in response to h2ofun)My guess is that some of you are running out of system memory, GPU memory, space on the drive where your temporary files are generated and stored, or all of the above.
Next time you try to encode your problem sequence(s) in the AME. monitor your system memory usage, your GPU memory usage and your available hard drive space on the system temp drive and see what info you can get from that.

73. Re: Media Encoder Stops Encoding with the New CS5.5
Paul_Duffey Oct 26, 2011 8:33 AM (in response to Jeff Bellune)Jeff, thats' what it is, a "guess". I wasnt running out of any of that, and I was monitoring system resources. That's how you tell when ame stops working actually cause with this fault it doesn't even show an error. Im going to almost bet it's a driver issue. If you look back in the post at the start even I am quoted at saying I have all updated drivers,..but sadly I didn't.

75. Re: Media Encoder Stops Encoding with the New CS5.5
Paul_Duffey Oct 26, 2011 8:45 AM (in response to Jeff Bellune)Right, ha ha. I'm only saying that I been there done that though. And technically if you're system doesn't have "minimal requirements" (ie big enough processsor or enough ram) you can't even install it on your system. Been there done that too with my core duo laptop that I was going to troubleshoot on some time ago.

76. Re: Media Encoder Stops Encoding with the New CS5.5
h2ofun Oct 26, 2011 8:48 AM (in response to Paul_Duffey)Paul, It was nice, when it worked. If I did a DV output encoding, these all worked with AME. But when I tried my HDV stuff, they failed. Still nice to que up a number of 4 hour projects and let them encode around the clock.
Now depending on when I start, they finish in the middle of the night and I have lost lots of hours I could have had things encoding. Oh well, hope a fix is found since many seem to be having an issue.

77. Re: Media Encoder Stops Encoding with the New CS5.5
Paul_Duffey Oct 26, 2011 8:54 AM (in response to h2ofun)yeah there's a multitude of differences with different outputs. What card and what driver version are you running?

78. Re: Media Encoder Stops Encoding with the New CS5.5
AOMOVIE Oct 26, 2011 9:00 AM (in response to Neverends Productions)Just a reminder of the important central fact to help prevent endless speculation and wild goose chases: My original problem with AME, and that of many others as well, started solely and immediately with the upgrade from CS Production Premium 5.0 to version 5.5. A single variable change. No concomitant change in hardware or drivers or configurations or any other variable. 5.0 worked, 5.5 didn't. This occurred immediately after the upgrade. Updating NVIDIA card drivers or any of the other list of routine things Adobe customer support sent did not solve the problem or improve the situation. Again, it was clearly something that changed in the code from 5.0 to 5.5. I would switch back to 5.0 except that projects once opened and edited in 5.5 are not backward compatible. So either I lose months of work, or I have to contend with AME 5.5's problems. The only workaround I've found is to switch from hardware to software GPU in PPro. That usually, but doesn't always work, and doubles or triples the render time. That's better than losing months of work, so I will have to contend with it.
Again, from the very start I read up on Adobe's hardware recommendations very carefully for what works best with the Adobe Production suite and built my system specifically for that purpose and nothing else: i7-980X chip, Quadro FX4800 card, 24 GB RAM, high speed HDs including SSD for the system. Nothing else installed but Adobe software and Microsoft Win7 64-bit OS. System works like a dream for everything else, can even render RED footage real time on the fly. Definitely NOT a hardware deficiency and NOT a driver deficiency, and NOT overheating or dust or loose connections, etc, etc. etc. AME 5.0 worked fine, after upgrade AME 5.5 hangs at random points when trying to export clips, but does not return an error or "crash" in the usual sense.
The last I've seen from Adobe on this is that they cannot replicate the problem on their test system. I don't know what else to suggest to anyone.

h2ofun Oct 26, 2011 9:03 AM (in response to Paul_Duffey)Nvidia Quadro FX 4500 Driver 8/5/2011 8.17.12.7589
I could get cs5.5 AME first release to work at times but the latest 5.5 update failed. But after wasting so many days trying, and seeing so many others having issues, when I got the PPro to work, I just gave up on AME until a new update comes out.
