Interface window not showing as grey

I am running the latest OS lion. Just updated it today. I am also running the monthly version of adobe photoshop version 12.1. And when I go into preferences to set up my settings I pick that I want the interface to be grey in all the selections. But it does not take. All I can see is my desktop of my Mac and anything that I have open on it. All the windows and bars and such on the software are correct but the work area will not turn grey. It is just my desktop view that I can see. It is like it is just a template that lays on my desktop and has the bars at the top and all the windows open on the left and right hand sides of the screen. It is very annoying and distracting to be able to see that along with the photos I am trying to edit. I am fairly new to Mac so it is supposed to run like that. I have used the windows version for years and years and it is a grey workspace on there. Help!
