John T Smith Nov 1, 2011 5:10 PM (in response to flbreen)Did you maybe enter something in the ROM content area?

2. Re: Encore CS5 Automatic Settings not working.
flbreen Nov 1, 2011 7:56 PM (in response to John T Smith)I don't think I have any ROM content but I am not sure what it is.
To produce this DVD I made 3 AVI files and imported them as timelines.
I did fiddle with the Project Settings and i did get the automatic estimates to come down below the DVD capacity.
I built the project and it stopped again but this time I continued to burn a DVD.
The DVD ended a minute short on the last chapter.
I will shorten the last chapter by 1 minute and try again.
Result:
I cut a minute from the last video file but the DVD would not build.
The DVD actually holds 4.7GB.
I add a minute of Black video to my last file with the hope that the DVD will run out of space somewhere in the middle of the black video and i will have my complete DVD.
There must be a better solution.

3. Re: Encore CS5 Automatic Settings not working.
Stan Jones Nov 1, 2011 8:08 PM (in response to flbreen)I suggest you post a screenshot of your build panel. (That is where you will find the ROM content, but other things might also be wrong.)
Something is wrong, and a disk built as you are trying may not play correctly.

Stan Jones Nov 1, 2011 9:37 PM (in response to flbreen)I assume from what you describe that the screenshots represent something inbetween the original attempt and now.
In the timelines, you have 2 assets transcoded and 1 not. When using automatic settings, it is important that you complete all menus (particularly motion), and that all assets are NOT transcoded until you transcode all of them.
It is possible to do it otherwise, but then Encore must then calculate what bitrate is required to fill WHAT REMAINS of the disk with only the part remaining. I assume you normally do what I described, and wonder if, for some reason, you did something else this time.
FYI, right under the blue "Disk info" bar, you will see the "used" and then "DVD-ROM". The 526KB is the minimum default. You have no DVD-ROM content.

6. Re: Encore CS5 Automatic Settings not working.
flbreen Nov 2, 2011 6:31 AM (in response to Stan Jones)Originally I built the project with all 3 files with Automatic settings.
When that build failed I shortened Reception2 by 10 minutes and I created a new project in Automatic.
When it failed again I set Reception2 to the 4MB 2 Pass setting and I was able to get a good build.
I set Reception back to Automatic to show you what the original screens looked like.
I guess that the Automatic settings can fail with some files.
I am hoping that it does not happen with the next project.

7. Re: Encore CS5 Automatic Settings not working.
Stan Jones Nov 2, 2011 7:09 AM (in response to flbreen)So you're good to go on this project?
Originally I built the project with all 3 files with Automatic settings.
When that build failed I shortened Reception2 by 10 minutes and I created a new project in Automatic.
With all automatic settings, unless you are putting a LOT of video on a disk (and pressing Encore to lower the datarate below what it is willing - in which case you should see such an error), reducing the length of the video is not likely to work.
Something was wrong at the early level. Hard to tell now what it was. I would troubleshoot what went wrong with the settings there. Or even create the project new.
If you are convinced the automatic is not working on a particular project, go to manual on all assets. Use a bitrate calculator as needed.

8. Re: Encore CS5 Automatic Settings not working.
flbreen Nov 2, 2011 8:16 AM (in response to Stan Jones)I was able to get through this project but it took twice as long as it should have.
I rely on the automatic settings to give me the best video on one DVD.
Does the Automatic settings make an estimate of the space it needs and for this video it is underestimating the space needed?
This video was all indoor low light video.
Does Encore process that video differently than it does outdoor daylight video of a football game?
I assume the outdoor video needs a higher bitrate and you get less video on a DVD.
Could you tell me what you mean by a bitrate calculator?

9. Re: Encore CS5 Automatic Settings not working.
Chris Nierop Nov 6, 2011 1:23 AM (in response to flbreen)In my experience, don't rely on the automatic settings.
When I have a project of say 24 Gb and want to transcode it for a double layer disk, the project is imported automatically as AVI, and is not transcoded by PPRO 5.5, although I did command to do so.
In Encore, when I try to transcode the project there, in automatic settings I choose for a double layer disk, but the bitrate it chooses is 4, just good for a single layer disk.and will bring the project down to 4.2 Gb..
I have to force manually to a bitrate of 8 to transcode it to about 7.8 Gb, suitable for a double layer disk.
Further more, when I transport from PPRO 5.5 a project, using the transportlink, in Encore the project of 24 Gb is mentioned as a project of 199Mb (but is not transcoded) which is impossible, and the timeline is a sort of pink coloured, . When I open Encore seperate and import the project manually, then the size of the project is mentioned as it is, 24 Gb (AVI) and the timeline has te normal colour. Don't know why this is. I can't find a setting to correct this, maybe a bug in Encore, or an problem between PPRO 5.5 and my system or an common problem.
So I always must control in detail what Encore does, whay t is imported and what bitrate is use to transcode..
