The options have changed for importing AI files. You get Footage, Composition, Composition with retain layer sizes.
Comp or Comp with layer sizes should work fine. Does on my Macintosh.
Oh, wait, I'm running CS5.0.
Umm, hit the AE help system. if CS5.5 changed the AI handler dramatically, it should be spelled out there.

Is the source document RGB?
TimeRemapper asked a very relevant question. See this FAQ entry (which is about PSD files, but the information is relevant for AI files, too):
> Unfortuneately I don't have Illustrator since i am a starving student. so I have to use the file as given to me.
You can download and use the free 30-day trial version.
> I'm pretty sure that version of After Effects was CS5 since it had the mocha plugg ins.
We've been including mocha since CS4.
It appears to be, according to the inpector in the OSX picture viewer. I would assume that is correct since it was prepared by an instructor teaching for broadcast design.
I'd prefer to save my 30 day trial offer for a more desparate moment.
Can you post the file somewhere so it can be analyzed?
Thanks for your input ya'll. I just realized something stupid I didn't notice before.grrr. stupid operator error.
Any desire to share in the event others have the same problem?
Sorry to ressurect an old thread ... But I had the same problem and it was due to the source psd being in CMYK as opposed to RGB. Hope this helps anyone else who encounters similar problems.
