    Installing CS5.5 on an SSD

    Dave_Evanson Community Member

Are there any problems using a SSD as the OS/Boot drive when installing CS5.5 Design Premium?

The reason I ask is I’m thinking of getting a new PC using an 128GB SSD for operating system (Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit) and programs. With a 2TB conventional disk for data etc. I believe that the licencing info is stored on hidden part of the drive (MBR?)  and I’m worried that this will cause problems with an SSD.

It’ll work fine but I’d be very careful about the size of that drive. 128 gigs is not very large by today’s standards.

You should certainly move the my documents folder to the data disk.

            On behalf of Adobe ...

There is no problem installing any Adobe software on SSDs and using such a drive as a Windows boot drive. We have plenty of Adobe employees doing just that.

I would strongly endorse Bob's advice about disk size. 128GB may fit all your Windows and application software today but assuming you keep the system for four to five years, that 128GB may prove to be quite inadequate in the longer term.

Depends how well the SSD mimics a platter drive.... Good drives have no issues, only some cheaper ones that do not support specific features may be problematic. Bob is right, though. 128GB isn't much and you will regret that with teh next version of the Adobe suite when you still need to keep the old one around. . Also make sure to set your swap drive in Photoshop and your system pagefile and temp drive to your other drive or you risk wearing out your SSD all too quickly.

Thanks for the advice everyone – I will look at the cost of a bigger drive, if it runs as well as my current system I would hope to get about 5 years from it.
