Curt Y Nov 15, 2011 8:57 AM (in response to jl2000)XMP is a hidden file. In Bridge View click show hidden files. If the jpeg has one it should show.
The XMP file holds the edit data, especially in RAW images.

Thanks for the reply.
I went under View and selected Show Hidden Files. (" In Bridge View click show hidden files. If the jpeg has one it should show. ")
Where would the XMP show?
I see "Supports XMP" marked "Yes" , under File Properties on every file I open - - even ones I save with IFanView unchecking "original XMP data". So I think I'm looking in the wrong place.

Your suggestion was right-on except (and I should have noted this in my original post) the final JPGs must be 300 ppi - the same as the PSD I'm starting with. If I Save for Web... the JPG is always 72 ppi. I can't find a way to overcome that. Can you?
Thanks for your input.

5. Re: How can PSD remove the "original XMP data" like IrFanView can?
Noel Carboni Nov 15, 2011 12:23 PM (in response to jl2000)There may be some confusion here... XMP is a format for representing metadata.
Photoshop can create .xmp files when converting raw files. These are only used when the raw file is converted again. I believe this may be what Curt is thinking of.
I think whatever's being reported by your recipient has nothing to do with these .xmp files, but rather to do with embedded metadata, such as the camera information, etc. To save a JPEG from Photoshop without embedded metadata, use Save for Web & Devices, as I have mentioned above.-Noel

6. Re: How can PSD remove the "original XMP data" like IrFanView can?
Curt Y Nov 15, 2011 12:24 PM (in response to jl2000)If you have an XMP file it will have the same name as the file so will be next to it. Try editing a pic in ACR as a test.
I could be wrong, but believe save for web is always 72 dpi.

Noel Carboni Nov 15, 2011 12:28 PM (in response to Noel Carboni)Sorry, I was typing my response when you posted yours.
The PPI value is one of the embedded metadata fields. I'm not sure what app you're using to open the JPG, but upon opening the file I'm assuming whatever app is just defaulting to 72 ppi, since you have chosen not to embed metadata.
You could try each of the other Metadata: settings in Save for Web & Devices I suppose... Perhaps there's a happy medium.
Photoshop CS5 changed the way it encodes some of the metadata, in order to conform to the EXIF standard. This may be a case where the recipient's software is the one at fault, and needs to be updated.

8. Re: How can PSD remove the "original XMP data" like IrFanView can?
jl2000 Nov 15, 2011 1:41 PM (in response to jl2000)All - I really appreciate your expertise.
It is possible that the "recipient " is wrong in the assumption that XMP is causing the error in Oracle. But he is accurate that when opening the JPG made with Pshop in IrfanView and using Save As..., there is an option to "Keep Original XMP". If that option is not checked the resulting JPG will satisfy Oracle (and be 300ppi - not 72ppi).
So I'm looking for a way to use Pshop to strip the XMP data out of the JPG (there is no external xmp file created) instead of the extra step of using IrfamView. I should mention that I have to make HUNDREDS of these JPGs for his Oracle db.
I've made a series of JPGs using all the settings in the "Web&Devices" Metadata and sent them to the customer to try with the Oracle. But I'm sure the 72ppi is a deal-breaker there. I will inquire about his version of IrfamView.
I'll get back with my results.
Thanks again.

Paul Riggott Nov 15, 2011 2:00 PM (in response to jl2000)You could try my Bridge Processor as that strips all metadata and gives you the option of setting the PPI.

SG... Nov 15, 2011 6:17 PM (in response to jl2000)Hi JL,
You can also try Dr. Brown's Services 2.0.6. It is a collection of script's, one of which called Dr. Brown’s 1-2-3 Process has an option to remove the preview and metadata in the output. It can be run using Bridge or from Ps.
Here's a movie showing you it's capabilities:

You can download the installer by going here, then scrolling half way down the page.

11. Re: How can PSD remove the "original XMP data" like IrFanView can?
Paul Riggott Nov 16, 2011 2:09 AM (in response to SG...)That won't work Steve as Dr. Brown's 1-2-3 strips the exif and PPI information. (Yes I have tested it).
Save For Web will allow you to keep PPI depending on what metadata is selected, I think the only scripts that allow you to choose is my a few of my scripts. IE: Picture Processor http://www.scriptsrus.talktalk.net/PP.htm
So it depends if the retained metadata would still create the problem?

SG... Nov 16, 2011 10:29 AM (in response to Paul Riggott)Hi Paul,
Yes, I pulled the script down and noticed that it forces to 72 ppi when checking the SFW option, too. I will see if the good doctor and his mad scientists have any thoughts on another rev.
I agree that understanding which tag or element in the XMP metadata packet is causing problems with the Oracle import is really needed. Once we have that then we can look at how best to approach a solution.

13. Re: How can PSD remove the "original XMP data" like IrFanView can?
jl2000 Nov 16, 2011 1:26 PM (in response to SG...)SG...
thanks for the reply and the tip on Dr. Brown.
The Dr.'s instructions emphasized CS4 and I'm on CS5 but everything seemed to work EXCEPT "Resize to Fit" doesn't work completely. No matter what Resolution I fill in - the JPG is always 72ppi.
To overcome this I included "Run Action:" with resizing actions of my own. This gave me 2 JPGs as output and I could not tell the differerence btw the output from "Before Image Resize" and "After Image Resize" - - even if "Resize to Fit" was unchecked.
Including a "Run Action" to make the size and resolution what I want yielded "copy.jpgs". I sent these to my customer for review. I'm wondering if Dr. Browns script removed metadata as promised even if my own Action ran After (or Before)?
Paul Riggott - thanks for your input.
I only worked with "Picture Processor" for one test and could not get it to yield a 300ppi JPG even though I used the "Custom Fit Image" to get all the properties I need - 640x480 @ "the document's resolution" (300ppi). It seemed the only way I could have the Metadata removed was if I selected "Save for Web". Maybe this defeated the resolution setting I made in Custom Fit. I'll poke around some more and get back to y'all.
Thanks to everyone for helping me out with this. It certainly has gotten a lot more complicated than I thought. In the process I almost forgot that I only wanted to strip out the XMP data. But I found out about all these cool image processing/work flow scripts and that's OK.

14. Re: How can PSD remove the "original XMP data" like IrFanView can?
Paul Riggott Nov 16, 2011 1:47 PM (in response to jl2000)You would be better off using the Bridge Processor (do not tick Use Fullsize JPEG this is only required if you want a file bigger than 1024 pixels) as this creates the JPG without metadata and gives you the option to set what PPI you want to the document. You can do the resize as it does its own version of fit image.
Picture Processor will retain PPI if the correct Metadata selection is made. Save For Web does not automatically remove metadata it depends on what you select. (This is only true for Photoshop CS4 or CS5)
The options are:-
No Metadata
All Metadata
Copyright
Copyright and Contact Info
All Except Camera Info
You could try the last option as that should retain PPI

Regarding Bridge Processor - I may not be understanding your instructions. No combination of settings results in a 300ppi JPG using Bridge Processor. The output is always 72ppi.
