How do I change the colour of a PS frame?

    pinksigma99

I am creating christmas cards and adding photos of my kids onto christmas backgrounds. I am dragging frames from the right hand side but want to change the colour of these frames - can someone please tell me how to do that?

I've worked out how to do it by clicking on the black/white circle and using the hue/saturation but when I go to do that with the frame on the new background, the colour of the background changes instead of the frame. I need to change the frames colour while on the background to get an exact match to what I want (does that make sense???)

Is there an easier way to create a frame for the photos? I also want to create a text box / frame (with the christmas message) with a solid colour background (different to the main background) can anybody tell me how to do that?

An example of what I am trying to do is here http://www.invitations2impress.com/christmas-cards-gift-tags

      Thanks in advance )

If your using one of the Frames fom the Content panel, some have a stroke for color of the frame which can be changed by double clicking

on the small FX in the layers panel and then setting the stroke color. If that isn't the case maybe you could post a screenshot with your layers panel visible.

Is your frame on a separate layer with transparent background?  If so activate that layer and lock the transparent pixels in the layer before doing the Hue/Saturation change. Alternatively you can Ctrl-click the layer to select just the frame and then do the H/S adjustment.

I tried to follow your work flow:

Dragged a frame from the content palette to the work area

Dragged photo from photo bin to fill the frame

Attempted to select the colored frame with the magic wand tool, then got a message that this is a smart object and is   not

              editable.

Bottom line, it does not work this way.

              Try this:

              1. Open picture file
              2. Duplicate background layer, shut off visibility of the background layer by clicking on its eye icon
              3. Working on the background copy layer, go to Select>all
              4. Go to Edit>stroke. In this dialog you can set the width of the stroke (your frame) in pixels, the color to suit, position it inside.
              5. Go to Select>deselect

              • Now, to take this further, you may wish to add a bevel:
              • Open the Effects palette, select Bevels>simple inner, for example.
              • Double click the "f" on the layer in the layers palette to bring up the Style setting dialog to fine tune the bevel

In a nutshell, you have to simplify the frame layer and erase the interior.

                  Here are the steps:

                  1. Create your background.
                  2. Add a new layer:
                    layers 01.png
                  3. Drag the frame you want to use onto the editing surface.  The frame will come in on its own layer:
                    layers 02.png
                  4. Simplify that frame layer:
                    simplify option.png
                  5. Choose the Magic Wand Tool and give it these settings:
                    magic wand options.png
                  6. Click on the interior gray area of the frame with the Magic Wand to select it, and hit your Delete key:
                    deletion 01.png
                  7. Switch to the Eraser Tool and erase the stuff that's left in the middle:
                    erased.png
                  8. Select the empty layer (Layer 1 in this example) and use File...Place to place your image on it.  The layer name will change to the name of the image.  Adjust the size and placement of the image.  Your layers will now look like this:
                    layers 03.png
                  9. With the frame layer selected, add a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer, making sure to "clip" it to the frame layer.  Adjust the sliders to suit:
                    HS adjustment.png

                  The final result:
                  final.png
