RoboHelp 8 freezes when I try to open my .xpj

I double-click my .xpj file and RH starts, sometimes it freezes with only the splash screen visible, sometimes it displays the pods but when I click on one RH freezes. I've tried deleting the .cpd and restarting, but get the same result. I am hosed at this point and desperate for help. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

OK, well after further investigation I noticed that other projects I had worked fine. So we opened the xpj of a working project in notepad and compared it with the xpj of my hosed project. It looked like the home page or default topic was 2 topics merged together, with some garbage characters. We cleaned up the topic path and name, restarted the project, and voila! All is well.

So I guess when you've tried deleting the cpd and the pss and can't think of anything else to try, check the xpj.

Glad you found the solution. You were able to amend your XPJ file which is better than deleting it. Sometimes just deleting it will fix things but that way you can lose other vital information. If ever you have to resort to that extreme, some fixes are on my site under Opening Projects.

Hi,

Actually, I went from the frying pan and into the fire! Many of my folders were missing - not a catastrophe, but after I imported a handful of the folders back into the project my system froze and crashed again, and most of the files I imported were missing again. This happened several times. I think I found the file that was giving me trouble (though not sure why it was problematic) and have imported all my files. Now I need to figure out why my template is missing some elements.

Do you have any advice for troubleshooting a corrupted file?

In that scenario I would create a zip copy of the project so that you cannot accidentally work on that backup. Then delete the XPJ and CPD and open the project with the HHP. See Opening Projects on my site to fix what you will lose.
