Illustrator drawing everything on an angle

I am having a weird problem with Illustrator CS4 for Mac.  Several months ago, it started drawing everything at an angle.  For example, if I select the rectangle tool, and draw a rectangle, it draws it at an angle.  If I choose the text tool, it types text at an angle.  I can't tell what the specific angle is.  I basically have to draw everything at an angle, then rotate it, but then the bounding box is completely goofy and it won't align things correctly (the bounding box is the same angle as what I originally drew).

Even if I use the option key to create a rectangle with specific dimensions, it draws it at the same angle.  The only way I can draw a rectangle like I want is to use the pen tool, use the interactive guides (which work fine and line things up in a normal way), then resize the rectangle in the options bar.

I have searched forums for this particular issue with no luck, and tried the recommended "throw out the prefs" if Illustrator is misbehaving.  None of these seem to do any good.

I don't feel like paying $39 for support on something as weird as this...I'm currently unemployed and using Illustrator for occasional design jobs I get.

I am using Mac OS X 10.6.6 on an iMac (older, from 2006).

      Any help appreciated!
