1. Re: PS CS4 switches to previously used tool when any key is pressed
Jeffrey Tranberry Oct 17, 2011 9:26 AM (in response to Stiksi)Are you pressing and holding Q and then letting go? That would invoke spring loaded keys which would bring you back to the last used tool.

2. Re: PS CS4 switches to previously used tool when any key is pressed
Stiksi Oct 17, 2011 12:33 PM (in response to Jeffrey Tranberry)No, it's with any type of key presses. And I think what you meant only works for tool shortcuts – if you hold down Q PS just cycles through Quick Mask and normal view really quickly. And this happens during actions and even when I press the spacebar to pan around the image.

3. Re: PS CS4 switches to previously used tool when any key is pressed
Jeffrey Tranberry Oct 17, 2011 2:51 PM (in response to Stiksi)The only think of is are 3rd party utilities. Do you have any third party utilities installed? (what's listed under other when you open OS X's System Preferences?

4. Re: PS CS4 switches to previously used tool when any key is pressed
Jeffrey Tranberry Oct 17, 2011 2:55 PM (in response to Jeffrey Tranberry)The other thing to note is whether this happens when just Photoshop is launched by itself (no other applications running)

5. Re: PS CS4 switches to previously used tool when any key is pressed
Stiksi Oct 18, 2011 2:16 AM (in response to Jeffrey Tranberry)I have these 3rd party utilities installed: DivX, Flash Player, Flip4Mac WMV, Growl (switched off), M-Audio Audiophile, MacFuse (uninstalled, but remains as an icon), Microsoft Mouse, Pastebot Sync, Perian, Version Cue CS4 and Wacom Tablet (the newest version 6.17-4).
Other background apps are Gfxcardstatus 2.1, Sophos Anti-Virus and moveAddict (cut-paste for finder).
I'll check the behaviour with PS as the only open application and post an update.

6. Re: PS CS4 switches to previously used tool when any key is pressed
Jeffrey Tranberry Oct 19, 2011 8:50 AM (in response to Stiksi)OK. I'd try and disable extra utilities as well. Once you get to a state where PS behaves correctly, then add them back and try and narrow down the offending app/utility.

7. Re: PS CS4 switches to previously used tool when any key is pressed
Stiksi Oct 19, 2011 6:12 PM (in response to Jeffrey Tranberry)It's a slippery problem, I've turned everything else off and it seems to have helped but I'll know for sure tomorrow when I do a full day's work. It's always been an unreliable problem, so it's difficult to know.
At the moment I'm suspecting gfxCardStatus, but there are still a lot of variables. I'll post an update once I've tested thoroughly.

Wade_Zimmerman Oct 19, 2011 7:45 PM (in response to Stiksi)I would guess the mouse software.

9. Re: PS CS4 switches to previously used tool when any key is pressed
Stiksi Oct 24, 2011 11:02 AM (in response to Jeffrey Tranberry)Ok, I've had one full day of work without a hitch. I did try to bring back background processes gradually but so far nothing's gone wrong. I hope it was gfxCardStatus because I updated it. I will wait a bit longer and see if something comes up.
Why I originally suspected gfxCardStatus was because I have three systems that all have the same apps and add-ons. Only one of them has gfxCardStatus so it was the one thing different. The mouse driver on the other hand, has been on all my machines. I don't know why it would cause a problem now.

11. Re: PS CS4 switches to previously used tool when any key is pressed
Stiksi Dec 9, 2011 4:04 AM (in response to Wade_Zimmerman)A small update on the matter: I have updated to CS 5.5 and initially I was seeing the same problems with the new version. In the mean time the problem was too spodaric to test, but on the new version, I got problems galore. So, I continued turning things off and after a while it looks like I've narrowed it down to one extension. I haven't fully tested yet, so I can't be 100% sure, but the winner was…
*snare roll*
The Microsoft mouse driver.
I should have known Microsoft was behind this, it's like the butler did it.
I'll test a few days more, hopefully over the weekend, but it looks like Wade was right all along!

13. Re: PS CS4 switches to previously used tool when any key is pressed
Stiksi Dec 12, 2011 5:19 AM (in response to Wade_Zimmerman)Oh, man how I wish that would have been it… I had a couple of problem-free hours of work but now it started again. There are no mouse driver processes running so it looks like the butler didn't do it after all. Back to the drawing board, I guess. I'm getting a bit desperate, it seems like there's nothing short of a full system reinstall I haven't tried.

14. Re: PS CS4 switches to previously used tool when any key is pressed
Wade_Zimmerman Dec 12, 2011 7:16 AM (in response to Stiksi)It seems you are jumping to conclusions.
What were you doing right before this started to happen again.
Are you sure the mouse drivers are not still installed? Did you update the drivers?.
Why not find out what is causing the problem so that if you reinstall your system you will not repeat the problem.

15. Re: PS CS4 switches to previously used tool when any key is pressed
Stiksi Dec 23, 2011 7:39 AM (in response to Wade_Zimmerman)The mouse driver is definitely out of the system. I ran an uninstaller and verified manually. Right before this started to happen again I was happily painting in Photoshop like usually. I've shut down gfxcardstatus every time it has started to happen again but my work is so fragmented at the moment that it's difficult to know if that has helped anything. If I work in 15 min intervals it doesn't really tell anything. I think that it might have helped but I can't be sure. So, it might be that gfxcardstatus and the mouse driver both cause this, or it could be neither. I don't know.
