import jpeg orientation and size problems

Hi Guys, I double checked all over for the answers but I must be missing something.

I have a batch of JPGs that I want to import. I've encountered two problems and/or things not coming in as expected.

      1. the size is huge compared to the window in program viewer. here's an example. See where the white line is showing the size of the photo.  The photo is about 3MB and I have clicked on "scale to frame size" as a default.

      2. Jpgs that are "portrait" orientation are imported as landscape (and also too large for the viewer)  the "scale to frame size" again is a default.

Regarding the size issue, do I have to reduce these in size? I had some that were super small - like 150kb - and they were pixallated.  Now have I gone TOO large in size with these at 3-4 MB?

thanks so much for any help!

Scale to Frame Size much be checked before you import your stills.  It won't have any effect on stills already imported.

Hi and thanks for taking the time to answer!

I doublechecked that I had 'scale to frame' clicked in my preferences, and then I imported a still.

It still appears portrait when it should be Landscape. when I click on it in the media browser, this is what I see

and, here are my preferences. which were set before the import.

I'm on a Mac.  In "finder" which is the directory utility, the icons appear as they should.  In other words, the images are not in need of rotating before I use them.

            any other ideas ?

            thanks !

The portrait issue is something else.  Not sure what causes that.  (Other than it actually being oriented that way and using a flag to tell programs to turn it automatically, which PP doesn't recognize.)

What often happens with portrait Images is that one uses a program, like Bridge, to do the rotation. However, until the Image has been Saved, the actual pixels have not been Rotated - only the display. A flag is placed in the metadata, on how to display the image. One needs to Save in the new Orientation, to get it correct.

Now, one CAN adjust the Fixed Effect>Rotation with the Still Selected, in the Effects Control Panel.

                Good luck,

                  Interesting.

I actually received these jpg files from a friend, on a CD. when I copied them onto my Mac, they appear in Finder as they should.

I'll fiddle with other programs to see how they appear.

In the meantime, yes, the Effects rotation thing is what I'm using to adjust.

                  thanks guys!

Not being a Mac-person, I cannot comment on Finder, but would guess that it's reading the metadata on how to display the images. If the Images were actually Rotated (pixel movement) in PS, their orientation should be as you expect.

                    Good luck,
