1. Re: Adding RAM to a HP Z800 - How many slots should i use?
Harm Millaard Dec 13, 2011 6:01 AM (in response to Averdahl)Roger,
Since the price is not the issue here, they are about the same, I would look in the documentation of the HP. Does it use single, dual or triple channel memory mode with 6 or 12 slots populated? With 12 slots you are sure to use triple mode memory, with 6 I don't know, but with only 6 slots populated, you have expansion options for the future.
There is a definite advantage to using 48 over 24 GB, but whether it is wise to invest in that memory with your specific mobo and CPU, or wait for the SB-E as an alternative option with 32/64 GB memory, albeit at much higher prices but with OC-ability, you have to decide that.

Harm,
I talked to the HP reseller for a couple of minutes ago and he said it uses tripple channel in both cases, ie 6 slots or 12 slots. He recommended 6 x 4GB modules for the same reasons you did, ability to upgrade in the future.
Thanks for you answer!

Bill Gehrke Dec 13, 2011 6:57 AM (in response to Averdahl)I just tried to install 8 GB modulesa in my X58 motherboard and that chipset apparently from all the information I could find does not support 8 GB modules. As that motherboard is the same generation I doubt it will work with 8 GB modules unless you find different information.

Averdahl Dec 13, 2011 7:22 AM (in response to Bill Gehrke)Bill,
All sources i have checked says i can use 8GB modules for the Z800. (AFAIK, i can put in 16GB modules as well so i can get up to 192GB of RAM.)
I have ordered the modules already and will report back if it works or not.

Averdahl Dec 13, 2011 8:09 AM (in response to Bill Gehrke)Bill,
I don't know the difference regarding chipsets, but the Z800's chipset is the Intel 5520. Probably the same as X58 in many ways.
Here is a link to HP's webiste with 8GB module for the Z800: http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm/WF06c/A10-51210-64186-3924237-64186-3949179-394918 0-3949182.html

I installed 6 x 8GB modules yesterday and it worked as a charm. After Effects got the most radical performance boost.

josephchau Jul 15, 2013 5:52 PM (in response to Averdahl)Sorry to jump in the middle
I also intend to upgrade my HP Z800 Workstation Memory
(1) What type, model or part number of your memory
(2) where do you buy them ?? and how much does it cost
for 48 Gb RAM
(3) you install them in the Black-Slot for both processor right ??
3 x8Gb for CPU 0 Black module
3 x8Gb for CPU 1 Black module
so you left WHITE Slot module Empty ??
Best Regards

8. Re: Adding RAM to a HP Z800 - How many slots should i use?
Averdahl Jul 16, 2013 2:03 AM (in response to josephchau)1. I bought 2 sets of Kingston KTH-PL313K3/24G
2. I bought them in Sweden. For your price, check with a reseller in your country.
3. If you open the side cover of the computer there are instructions how/where to place the memory printed on the inside of the cover. If i remember correctly, yes the whte slots are empty when using 6 memory modules on a 2 processor Z800.
I use this machine daily and it has worked flawlwess with those memory modules.
