    Can't set tabs in CS4

    Arrow'd Community Member

I've tried searching for this with no success so please forgive if this is a re-hash.

I have a simple, two-page document. I have a paragraph style set up for the body and would like to adjust the tabs.

I open the paragraph style and click on the tabs section.

I can select the type of tab I want to use (centered, left, right) but cannot get it to apply it to the style.

I am able to type in the exact location and have InDesign place ONE tab, but that's all.

I cannot get it to place more than one tab and I desperately need two.

I abandoned hope of using the paragraph style and went directly to the body copy on the page and discovered the same shortcoming.

      Anyone have any suggestions?

I suspect I'm just missing something ridiculously simple.

Selec teh type of tab you want, then click inthe empt sapce on the top half of the ruler to put it approximately where you want it. Drag to final position, or enter it in the position field. Repeat for each tab you need.

            That's the problem.

I'm not allowed to click anywhere along the ruler to set the tab.

I can only set one by entering a measurement in the position field.

make sure you're working on the correct, unlocked layer. i had the same thing happen and noticed that although i had the textbox selected, my layers panel showed me working on a different layer that was locked.

                  Phil,

I appreciate the feedback but that was not the problem.

I was never able to get a satisfactory answer to my question. My fix was to open the tab palette, set one tab then close the palette, open it again, set a second, close it, repeat as needed.

To make it even more infuriating, it didn't occur every time; just whenever ID felt like it.

My company just rolled out CS5.5 and I'm hoping I don't need to invent a similar workaround.

Did you ever try trashing the prefs as suggested? You didn't post back to say it didn't work...

I didn't reply due to some bizarre glitch with my account.Until Friday I haven't been able to find any buttons in the forum. And from home I still can't find a reply button, I honestly don't know how I did it on Friday.

Don't know if you can help with that aspect of it but I cannot seem to contact the webmaster for the site to log this particular problem.

In the attached screenshot, even though I'm signed in there are no buttons that allow me to reply to anything (I also can't create new discussions for the same reason).

                      BAD

Unfortunately we can't see your screen shot, either, because attachments are disabled (have been for some time) and you must embed the images into a post using the camera icon on the web page, like this:

                        CameraIcon.png

or you can post a link to an external server.

Your login problems may be caused by the \ in your user name. Try using Arrow'd when logging in and see if that helps -- it matches the shortcut to your profile. Log out completely from both Adobe.com and the forums before attempting to log in again.
