1. Re: Photoshop CS4 image displays incorrectly
Curt Y Dec 23, 2011 5:34 PM (in response to jashley007)This is likely a video card/driver problem. Make sure you have the latest driver.
It can also be an Open GL problem (symptom of inadequate video card). Click on edit/preferances/performance and uncheck the Open GL box.

jashley007 Dec 23, 2011 6:07 PM (in response to jashley007)I'll work on this tomorrow or soon and post results. I thought it might be a video card problem but I don't know how Photoshop "draws" the images. I also saw mention of "open GL" while searching help issues but am not sure what that is either! This was the first time I've seen this and I've been a Photoshop user since version 2 way back!

jashley007 Dec 23, 2011 7:57 PM (in response to Curt Y)Where is "here?"
I didn't see this under "edit/perferances" in Photoshop.

6. Re: Photoshop CS4 image displays incorrectly
Curt Y Dec 23, 2011 7:24 PM (in response to jashley007)Edit/preferences and performance tab. At least that is where it is in CS5.
If not there look in the other tabs.

8. Re: Photoshop CS4 image displays incorrectly
jashley007 Dec 24, 2011 4:45 PM (in response to Curt Y)Sorry I was off line for a while....CS4 "edit perferences" does not show anything about "openGL." I have CS5 running on a Dell Precision laptop and I found what you were talking about. The problem machine (running CS4) is in another location and I won't get back to it until next week. I'll first try the video card driver update; then I don't know what to do. I know the Dell Inspiron desktop with the problem is running Vista but I don't know if the monitor is hooked up via VGA or DVI (I do recall the video card has both.) Could this make a difference? No other programs other than Photoshop CS4 show a problem on that machine.

9. Re: Photoshop CS4 image displays incorrectly
Curt Y Dec 24, 2011 5:31 PM (in response to jashley007)Here is a link for Open GL http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/404/kb404898.html Looks like it is same position on CS4 & 5. Link also shows known problems with Vista.
You have never said what the video card is. On some laptops it is just an Intel chip on the motherboard. These will run PS but usually not Open GL.
The type of monitor hookup should not matter.
How much ram do you have on the laptop?

10. Re: Photoshop CS4 image displays incorrectly
jashley007 Dec 24, 2011 5:49 PM (in response to Curt Y)My Dell Precision Laptop is now running Window 7 and Photoshop CS5. It has a Core I7 processor, 4gb RAM, and an ATI FirePro M7820 (Fire GL) video card. Under "performance" in CS5 the "open GL" box is checked. It has run the CS4 program previously without problem and I never had reason to look at the "performance" area under "preferences" in CS4. I recall only seeing the old "preferences" which included file handling, cursors, and so on but not "performance." I'll look again when I get to the computer it is now on.
That one is a Dell Inspiron desktop with a Radeon 2400 video adapter, running Windows Vista; it has a Viewsonic flat screen as a monitor. This has been the only problem program the machine has had.
I'll follow the link you provided and keep you posted. I do appreciate your help. I do remember seeing a display issue with DVI input but it affected the whole monitor image, not just a part of it. So it is undoubtedly a video display/driver/compatability issue and I know a solution will be found!

11. Re: Photoshop CS4 image displays incorrectly
jashley007 Dec 26, 2011 6:11 PM (in response to Curt Y)Thanks to your help, PROBLEM SOLVED. I finally found the "openGL" box in CS4 performance preferences, unchecked it, and the files began displaying correctly. Since we don't plan on any 3D work or other effects mentioned in the linked article, I didn't at this time go into driver updates.
Again, thanks for your help. I'll report it on the forum page as well.

12. Re: Photoshop CS4 image displays incorrectly
Curt Y Dec 26, 2011 6:17 PM (in response to jashley007)Open GL has little to do with 3D. The features include:
- Scrubby Zoom. See Zoom continuously in Photoshop CS5 Help.
- Heads Up Display (HUD) color picker. See Choose a color while painting in Photoshop CS5 Help.
- Color sampling ring. See Choose colors with the Eyedropper tool in Photoshop CS5 Help.
- Brush dynamic resize and hardness control. See Resize or change hardness of cursors by dragging in Photoshop CS5 Help.
- Bristle Brush tip previews. See Bristle tip shape options in Photoshop CS5 Help.
- Rule of thirds crop grid overlay. See Crop images in Photoshop CS5 Help.
- Repoussé
Nothing you can not live without, but bells and whistles many like.

13. Re: Photoshop CS4 image displays incorrectly
jashley007 Dec 26, 2011 6:28 PM (in response to Curt Y)Yes, I might get into this someday, but my colleague I loaded my copy of CS4 for is a beginner working with digital infrared, was using an old copy of Photoshop version 6, and a website she is using for tutorials has videos using the newer interfaces like in CS4 and 5 (Lifepixels). I'm using CS5 mostly for editing photos of tires for Goodyear and headshots for a variety of clients. Your leads and suggestions are very handy. Since my Dell Precison handles CS5 just fine, I now know what I will need when I upgrade my Dell XPS (pentium IV, Windows XP pro) desktop, which is really showing its age! Funny how what was the fastest biggest desktop I could once afford is now outdated and outstripped by a laptop that cost about the same!
