1. Re: Sharing tiff from Mac to PC, doable?
Marian Driscoll Dec 29, 2011 8:36 AM (in response to 2drumstix)TIFF files made by the same version of Photoshop can be opened on either platform.
Can you be more specific about the error message? Did it apply to the entire drive or just to images?
Unless you have special software to read HFS Mac drives, you should expect him to bring a USB drive that is formatted as NTFS or FAT32.

c.pfaffenbichler Dec 29, 2011 8:43 AM (in response to 2drumstix)When saving a tiff one can set the Byte Order to »Macintosh« or »IBM PC« – though I thought that was no longer relevant.

Could you copy the files to your volume or did you try to open them from the USB drive?
Is there any chance the director could have mistakenly named the »….tif« while they actually were another format?
Could you alternatively use psds?

3. Re: Sharing tiff from Mac to PC, doable?
2drumstix Dec 29, 2011 8:56 AM (in response to 2drumstix)Thanks all.
Marian -The error message is: Could not complete your request because its not the right kind of document.
But yesterday while his drive was connected the error also included that file might be corrupt - which they werent.
Yes, it applied to all tiff's on his USB drive, but I could see all his files and open .jpgs on that drive. I'll assume it was NTFS.
c.pfaffenbichler - We did both, tried to open from his drive, and I copied it to my desktop - culdnt open either way.
Could he have named them tiff when they were some other filte type - any thing could be possible, although this is his third film in 2011 and he has worked using tiff's on all other projects, he also does graphic work, so I'm sort of assuming he wouldnt have made that mistake on hundreds if files on his drive, but I'll ask. I'll also ask him to check the Byte Order.
Any other ideas?

6. Re: Sharing tiff from Mac to PC, doable?
Curt Y Dec 29, 2011 9:22 AM (in response to 2drumstix)Within the last week there seems to be at least 5 people that have posted problems with opening files that have just saved. Can be tiff, psd or other extension, does not matter. Can all these posts be related? Perhaps some virus or an update fouling up the works?

7. Re: Sharing tiff from Mac to PC, doable?
Marian Driscoll Dec 29, 2011 9:24 AM (in response to 2drumstix)You're not opening the small files that start with a period, are you? Those would be preview thumbnails for display in OS X.
You might open the TIFF files in an alternate image tool to see if you can identify the true format. XNView.com has a decent free viewer.

2drumstix Dec 29, 2011 9:43 AM (in response to 2drumstix)Curt Y - not sure, this is my only post about it. This just happened for me yesterday 12/27/11
Marian - hmmm, yes that was was I tried to open, the file name started with a period. Thought I did try others that didnt start with the period - but cant be certain if I did.

9. Re: Sharing tiff from Mac to PC, doable?
Marian Driscoll Dec 29, 2011 11:03 AM (in response to 2drumstix)If that is the case, look for identically named companion files without the leading period. The files with the leading period are definitely not the files you want to be opening.
